Phat Loot Phriday: Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat
Name: Weather-beaten Fishing Hat (Wowhead, Thottbot, Armory)
Type: Rare Cloth Head
Armor: 127
Attributes:
- +40 Stamina, +40 Spirit
- On equip: increased fishing +5. This hat isn't to be confused with the Lucky Fishing Hat, which also gives this fishing bonus, and is available only through turn-ins at the Stranglethorn Fishing Tournament. +5 bonus isn't a huge bonus to fishing at all (your main +bonus comes from your fishing pole), but given that it's an extra +5, it's worth having.
- And here's the good part: on use, attach a lure to your equipped fishing pole that increases fishing by +75 for 10 minutes. With a 10 minute cooldown, you effectively have an infinite lure. Unfortunately, the highest bonus from lures is actually 100, so if you need those extra few points somewhere, you'll still have to shell out for a lure (or, more likely, pick them up from the fishing quest reward). But this hat will come in handy if you're doing any regular fishing for sure.
- Plus, can you say stylin'? No, really, this shares a model with the "Stylin'" hats, which means it looks pimp.
And this is a great time to mention something we heard at BlizzCon as well. Blizzard is working on tuning up fishing, and they mentioned Animal Crossing as an influence. They said that likely, you'll see a fish in the water and decide whether or not you want to go after it, and then you'll throw your lure in and have to watch as the fish does or doesn't decide to bite it. Does that sound more fun? Maybe not, but Blizzard has said they specifically want to bring more fun into fishing and all of the other professions soon. Should be interesting to see.
Getting Rid of It: You'll want to save it, because even though the regular stats may not be that great, odds are you'll have to wait quite a while until another fishing hat option rolls around again. But just in case they do implement that Animal Crossing thing, and you hate it so much you want to quit fishing and burn all of your gear, you can sell it off for 2g 54s 90c, or disenchant it into a Large Prismatic Shard, with a small chance of a Void Crystal.

aw you're so lucky, when I get new items I lose bag space instead of gain it. =(

I managed to get this from the Shattrath Fishing daily maybe two days ago, I think.
This, plus Nate's Lucky Fishing Pole, an Aquadynamic Fish Attractor over 400 fishing skill and I was still getting grey crap from Northrend deep sea. -_-

I've had this hat for awhile. If I don't have "show helm" checked because my current helm looks like something a 3 year-old created, I've been known to forget the fishing hat is equipped. I ran two wings of heroic Naxx wondering why my DPS suffered. Yup, I had finished the fishing daily before the invite went out. I equipped my pole arm, but never once thought to check the helm. And no one else in the raid thought to check either. Some exceptional yucks over that gaffe.

Try using an equipment manager (the built in one or an addon) to set up profiles. I have one for pve, one for pvp, one for nakey, and one that has my highest ilevel items equipped. The pvp and pve icons are on one of my bars. Whenever I get to an instance, I hit the pve button. Immediately, everything swaps out, including what I'm wielding.

Agree. I'm a Huntard and even I use the Equipment Manager to change into my fishing garb.

But, I have been known to melee mobs with my Kalu'ak Fishing Pole after being interrupted during a mining session... while wearing my Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat. Which is probably the only Phat Loot Phriday item that I ever had... or ever will have ;)

Turlagh, absolutely! That fishing pole is an exceptional weapon. As a guild, we've been known to equip our fishing gear and, when we used to be able to, go into the older dungeons. Way too much fun beating orcs in Blood Furnace with fishing poles.

I got this back before 3.0 dropped, and its been in my inventory ever since, though fishing poles have come and gone. Big Iron, Seth's Graphite, the Kalu'ak, and whatever comes next.
I remember I was disappointed I never got the Old Man Barlow ring. Now, who remembers that? But the hat is forever...

You missed a perfect opportunity for a joke in "Hat Loot Hriday."

I consider myself extremely lucky to have received this item so early. My fishing skill was not even at 300 when I got this and my Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole. These items, and the drive to get fishing related achievements, really helped me max out my fishing skill.

Been incredibly lucky fishing in WotLK. Caught the turtle mount on the 2nd day of WotLK after about 80 casts. Got this fishing hat four or five months ago. Decided to take a shot at Old Ironjaw recently and caught him in less than 30 casts.
But I never have received the fishing pole from the daily so I had to grind honor with the Kalu'ak. Haven't had any luck sneaking into Orgrimmar and catching Old Crafty.

Wow congrats Mike. Hope you get that Mr. Pinchy one day!

Since the 3.1 fishing changes the difference between +75 and +100 lures aren't quite so important. Before that you might not have had enough skill to fish in an area at all, but now you can fish anywhere at any skill, so the difference is just a bit more junk if you're below the skill level of the area you're in. Makes this hat a lot more useful, especially when levelling fishing.
Ofc, there are still times when you might want +100 lures. If you're intending to fish for a long period of time then you want your junk rate as close to 0 as possible. But usually a +75 lure is fine.

I have the hat from the STV fishing contest... but it's one of those things that I mean to use when I go fishing, but never do. -)_(-
