I don't know that we've ever quite posted about this, but here you go: given that we're going to be losing old Azeroth forever (sometime
in the next 12 months, if the guessing is to be believed), Too Many Annas is
stepping up the wallpaper project, aiming to put together
pictures of every single zone in the World of Warcraft. Before, this was just a bit of idle fun, turning some scenic views into desktop-sized files, but with the recent
Cataclysm-ic news, this is almost a public service, saving these classic old zones from extinction. We've got time yet, surely, but if you like the way anything looks in Desolace or The Barrens, now's the time to screenshot it for good.
TMA is even taking requests, so even if you just have a suggestion for a great view, you can send it along and it'll get into the wallpaper database. Only a matter of time until the world is completely shattered; probably a good idea to admire these old zones while we can.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it. Nothing will be the same. In WoW.com's Guide to Cataclysm you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion. From Goblins and Worgens to Mastery and Guild changes, it's all there for your cataclysmic enjoyment.

I still want to know if Mankrik's wife will make a repeat appearance in the new Barrens
Dan Aug 28th 2009 3:28PM
Probably.
.... as a scorched corpse.
devilsei Aug 28th 2009 3:30PM
Yep, she will make a return, as an undead boss!
"For years, Mankrik's wife has been left in the wild southern half of the barrens, a beaten and broken corpse. But now, she has risen, and has carved out her own territory in the blasted ruins that once were the Barrens. Now she commands her own army of undead gnolls.
Introducing a new dungeon for the 15-20 range! You may be used to finding her, but can you take her down, while ensuring Mankrik lives long enough to reach her?"
zuldim Aug 28th 2009 7:20PM
@devilsei
She would have 5 random spawn points in the instance, each at the end of a long hallway with one boss blocking her. You would have to keep going down each hall until you found her.

Ahhhh Nigel's Point! Brings back memories! This is a great idea.

Lyraat Aug 28th 2009 4:19PM
Agreed. I welcome the massive overhaul of Desolace and Barrens. Out with the fail, in with the win!
Sarakin Aug 28th 2009 4:32PM
actually I really liked desolace maybe it was the story behind it and the whole centaur thing. I found it pretty interesting. My only problem is that since it's a 30-40 zone the quest levels are kind of wonky like the other zones of it's level.
I go there at say 30 or 31 as I think I should and get a bunch of level 37 quests. If it wasn't for that I'd love the zone all the more.

I will miss Desolace. There was something eerily calming about the place. And I love how dark it was all the time.
The new Desolace looks awesome though. And no, I won't miss the Barrens. XD

This is a great idea and these wallpapers of the zones are excellent quality. I myself have been taking screen shots of all the zones as I go through them either on my main or my alts.
tyler Aug 28th 2009 3:17PM
Forest Song. I freaking love that place, and I can only imagine it's gonna get completely overrun out of existence, right as the Draenei showed up to help rebuild it... Go fig.

I wonder if the Dame in Loch Moden will Break in the new xpac
Frank Aug 28th 2009 3:29PM

Desolace gets such a bad rap.
And believe it or not, Nick and everyone else who bad-mouths it, I am going to miss it.
Early in my playing of the game, I came to the conclusion that Desolace would be the best place to go for Mithril mining and began to make forays into there as early as level 23 or so. I was struck by how the zone was so different from every other one -- it looked like the surface of the Moon! And of course, the challenge I faced by being someplace too high in level for me always made my excursions exciting ones.
The centaur camps, the remains of Giant Kodos, the pools of rusty-looking water, the Mannoroc coven (or whatever that group of demons is called). Yes, I will miss this zone more than any other one in the game (though I am looking forward to its facelift).
I often hear people complain about the quests in Desolace, which I fail to understand. There are three quest chains, involving the demons, the naga, and the orc citadel, that can all be run through in a couple of hours. In fact, I have sent every one of my alts here just to bang out these ten or so quests. I especially enjoy fighting underwater on the reef with all the naga, and the island you swim out to for the treasure chest.
Desolace, you will be missed!
(by me at least)

When I leveled my Blood Elf Pally (this was before the XP bump) I managed to level to 70 (this was before Wrath) without doing a single bit of questing in Tarren Mill or Stranglethorn Vale. I'm on a PvP server and they are both nightmare areas for ganking. One of the zones that made skipping the other zones possible was Desolace. Count me as a fan.

Horribly small resolutions.
Keyra Aug 28th 2009 5:54PM
? ? ?
The standard size fills my screen, and I have it set at 1152 x 864; however, there's also a little green arrow icon at the bottom of the picture that makes it even larger.
Not certain where you are getting YOUR pictures from...
crsh Aug 28th 2009 3:46PM
Hrm.. ok, call me insensitive, but what is there to save? The old world is getting a make-over, it's a good thing, the game is evolving... Ok, so I'll be first in line to kick Ony in the groin again come 3.2.2, she's an all-time classic.
