We Have a Tabard: Don't go away mad, just go away
The above video by Propostris and Gigi, while awesome, is not safe for work.
As I've mentioned before, building a guild can be very challenging. Recruiting and retention efforts are critical. Sometimes you find members, however, that may seem to fit in, but in the end they do not. You must strike a balance between having enough guilides to get things done and a team that works well together. Your guild rules and personal interactions help determine which members are valuable members of the team and who needs a /gkick.
I have found that having a lot of guild members is generally not better than having quality guild members. There are many ways in which guild members can not fit. Sometimes folks activity times do not mesh with the guild. It doesn't really do any good to have folks tagged up but stuck PUGging raids because they can't be there for raid times. This person may not need to be removed, but don't be surprised if he or she leaves to find a guild with raid times more suited to their play times.
Skill is another common mismatch. I've encountered some people that really want to be raiders, but don't have the time or attention to do it. Someone who generally lacks raid awareness is not a good fit for a raiding guild. You don't remove someone after the first time they stand in a fire or accidentally pull a trash mob. When it becomes obvious that someone isn't interested in improving their performance, it may be time for a separation. There are some fights where a single person can wipe a raid, it's up to you to decide how many wipes are too many.
Personally, I have trouble with someone who is discourteous to the raid. Arriving late or leaving without notice frustrate the group and the guild. Chronic AFKs or constantly needing buff reminders also represent a lack of raid awareness. Folks who regularly leave raids high and dry should not be surprised when it's a while before they are asked back to raids, and if their violations are severe or frequent enough, they may be released from the guild.
Attitude is the most important thing though. Whether it's situational negativity or an over developed sense of self-importance attitude problems are toxic. There are many personalities in WoW, and the more folks in the guild the more chances there are for conflicts. But someone who is just cranky or offensive is usually just poisonous to the guild. I find that it's best to remove someone when I have multiple people complaining about a single person. No matter how good of a player it's better to remove one than alienate the many. One rotten apple can really put a damper on a guild.
It's up to you to decide how serious your guild business is. Overall, your guildies should match your expectations. My guild was formed on "people I would sit around a campfire and drink beer with." We get things done, but have a good time while we're doing it. I expect everyone to pay attention to the raid, but I am really put off when someone raises their voice in vent. Since this is what I do for fun, I enjoy a mellow environment. I do my best to keep instill that perspective in my guild and my raid.
It's not fun to remove people from your guild. I generally feel bad when I have to hit the "gkick" button, but in the end I know it's for the better. I like to believe that there's a guild out there for everyone. It's just not always mine.

I have to say, getting Rickroll'd would have been an improvement over that video.

The content of the entire article was pretty much nullified the scourge that is Gigi. I'm fairly certain most of the people failed to even read the article itself once they viewed the video.

I didn't even watch it. I've seen enough of Gigi's work to know it is utter crap. Seriously, her flow is awful.
On the guild subject though, I've known a few players on the Garithos realm that were bad news for guilds. One guy (I'll be nice enough not to mention his name) is known as "The Cancer" because while he has skills, he has caused multiple guilds to disband after he gets an officer slot. Basically, he lacks any social tact and gets avoided like the plague. Another guy is the "I'm the greatest rogue EVER" kind of guy despite the fact he actually is quite bad, but he berates everyone, officers included. He even attempted to put an in-game hit out on a guildmate via the forums.
The thing these two players, and others like him, have in common is they never leave guilds on their on accord... They always force the leaderships to kick them. Then of course they call foul, accuse the guild of being bad, apply for other guilds, get rejected and then call those guilds bad, and then finally they get into another and the process starts all over again.

There's a guild on my server that caters to people with poisonous personalities. They expressly say that they are looking for people who can "bust balls and have a good time." I haven't seen them recruiting recently, so I don't know if they are still around, but it was amusing to see their recruitment messages.
Moral of the story, there *is* a guild for everyone.

I was in a guild just like that on my old server, but when I transferred to hang with some other friends, I ended up in what I assume is a more "normal" guild environment. Now I kinda miss the constant smack talking, because it was a great mechanism for being truthful without being hurtful. In a normal, considerate environment, in order to tell someone "You are being bad and here's how to fix it", you have to be considerate, beat around the bush, maybe even just never bring it up. In my old guild, all you had to do was say "Hey, huntard, nice job there gemming spellpower into those expertise pants." Everyone would laugh, including the person who had messed up, and then someone would point the guy in the right direction. Situations instantly got diffused because being an ass was the norm, and nobody was taking themselves seriously.

Wow. That rap is the worst kind of rap.
Durane Aug 29th 2009 2:50PM
WoW "Gangster" Rap is a disease. I miss the days of Nyhm where it was funny... Now it's "Ooo look at me, I'ma badass mofo! I'm e-thuggin' without skill in da BGs yo!" Yeah I can write crap lyrics, too. It's super hard. It's pretty much the formula they all use.
Only WoW rapper I've heard that even has a shred of talent is Abandonation. Actually, Abandonation is pretty decent, but I'm still tired of the gangster crap.

Rap and R&B both suck. I have a passionate disliking for both. Bleh to this stupid song.

The guy did a great job, the girl needs to work on her tone and timing.

+1
lolwut Aug 29th 2009 2:51PM
..on second thoughts the girl is probably just there for the sole fact of 'wow, it's a girl rapping.' to be more precise 'wow, it's a girl.'
litchfield.mark Aug 29th 2009 2:56PM
Seconded
Super Guest Man 9000 Aug 29th 2009 6:23PM
I didn't say the video was good, but vocally the guy did a good job. At least when compared to the girl. Sheesh...
