[Updated] Realm Status: All realms to be online by 10:30pm EDT
Happy Tuesday everybody! Maintenance has been extended to 2:00 p.m. PDT / 5:00 pm EDT. Check out the Tuesday Morning Maintenance post for some good things to read while you wait. And we'll keep you up to date, should anything change.
With all of the hardware upgrading being done, there are bound to be some DNS issues. If you have trouble logging in when the realms are back up, try the solutions listed here.
Update 5:00 p.m. EDT: The realms after the break will be down until at least 4:00 p.m. PDT / 7:00 p.m. EDT. Realms not on the list after the break should be up by 3:00 p.m. PDT / 6:00 p.m. EDT.
Update 7:42 pm EDT: People who can log in are having severe issues and the realms after the break are still down. Isradun says they will give us an update in 2 hours.
Update 8:18 pm EDT: All realms should be online within the hour.
Update 8:50 pm EDT: No really. They mean it this time. All realms should be up by 9:30 pm EDT. Warning!: The ones that are up are sloooooow.
Update 10:11 pm EDT: Now they are saying 10:30pm EDT.
With all this extended downtime, Mashable has a list of thing you can do while Gmail is down (Gmail is down today too, if you haven't heard). They apply perfectly well to WoW as well.

Rooaaar! I finally decided to level an alt, I have a Guild picked out, 60g sent to him, and I can't play! And High School starts tomorrow! /sob

I'm on Ravenholdt, so I get atleast an hour earlier...

Why give your Alt 60g to start like all the other rushing sheep? Why not give your Alt NOTHING and then you can play tour new toon the way it was meant to be played? No need to give them a ton of gold(60g IS a ton of gold for a level 1 to start with) and have them geared up before they should be. Learn your class and focus on gaining SKILL rather than using gold to equip your toon with items it shouldnt even have.
I dont get why people want to rush rush rush, instead of playing their toon the way it was meant to be played. Stop giving your alts gold and just play them the same way you played your main, when wow was new.
No need to take advantage of the system and send gold to a new toon.
I'm the type of player that loves wow. I dont try to get away with having a level 1 with 60g, though I know tons of players use this option all the time to get ahead.
I hope one day Blizz will decide to prevent players from rushing and mailing gold, and if they leave, good- go play warhammer. I cant wait for the day that wow is played by people who arent abusing the system and who play because they do love the game and leveling experiences.
Oh well, one can dream...

@xaspro - I love WoW too, having been playing since launch day. I especially love WoW when my level 5 alts have four 20-slot bags so I don't have to return to town every 5 minutes. Hell, my recently rolled level 10 warlock has a 32-slot Shard and 32-slot Herbalism bag (as well as 2 obligatory 20-slots). On my server, that's 1100g of bags on a level 10 alt.
So - why should my characters not have these advances that I've EARNED? Sending gold and bags to an alt isn't "abusing the system". It's using the rewards of the system the way they're intended to be used. I take it you don't believe in heirloom gear either, even though it's specifically intended as a method of rewarding high level end-game play.
Lets be honest -- when you know what order to quest in and exactly where to go at what time, you breeze through the content fairly quickly. A couple of 6-slot bags is a severe handicap. It wasn't when we first levelled, didn't know what we were doing, and took hours for a level. But now, intentionally handicapping your progress is fairly stupid.

Let's not bring up the heirloom items. Well.. beyond that last sentence lets not bring up heirloom items. Or that sentence.
You get the point.

Dude, if I want to have an easier time instead of decking out my alt in grays, all the power to me. If your play style dictates grays/a few questing greens, that's fine. Mine involves sending gold to my alt in order to make the leveling process more painless. Sorry if that bothers you, but I pay $15 bucks, I put in the effort to make the Gold, I can spend my money on repairs and bags. I should probably go buy 20 slots, but then I haven't got around to getting them on my main either. >.> other than the Dragon Hide Backpack, of course.

Tuesdays, Tuesdays never changes.

And yet, according to the screenshot above, it's "Breaking News"

I WANT MY 50 CENTS BACK!
Stephen Sep 1st 2009 5:49PM
Now I just need my WoW PIPBoy to let me know when things are fixed so I can venture out of my Tuesdays Vault.

QQ Moar. I know real life sometimes limits people's game time but really, this is nothing new at all.
Nazgûl Sep 1st 2009 5:15PM
Be less hostile. He wasn't giving some huge QQ post about "OMFG THIS IS EFFING DUMB LOL I QUIT LOL", just stating he was disappointed.
Styvorama Sep 1st 2009 5:55PM
Yeah Cthulu take a breath, if anything YOU just QQed over nothing. Just cause you are in a forum does not mean you need to be hostile.
sliksix Sep 1st 2009 2:14PM
Hopefully for good reasons :) I really hope the BG honour-only gear gets upgraded after maint. is done :)
Seaborn Sep 1st 2009 2:17PM
Imagine that.
Zangetsen Sep 1st 2009 2:17PM
i figured as much. when they bring down selected realms, there is always some extended delay.
Goldilox Sep 1st 2009 2:22PM
Never have I seen a system with so much downtime. There must be a terrible design somewhere with at least one single point of failure that prevents them from bringing up some realms while they continue working others. I remember in the early days that an outage was 4hours, now 8 (or more) seems to be the norm (granted we had some wicked lag back in the day). Even back then, some realms would come up and people would play alts they had stashed on various servers.
Can anyone tell me whether we get credited for these unplanned extensions of downtime?
