Breakfast Topic: The trouble with instance servers

My server rarely encounters the Door Boss, but many of you have to deal with the above error on a constant basis. The error originated as a fix for high population realms that had issues with instance lag and crashes. Rather than have you frustrated with problems while in the dungeon, Blizzard decided to put a virtual bouncer at the "door" to keep the load down on the instance servers. While I do think that this was a good idea on Blizzard's part, I think that they erred greatly by not putting a queue at the "entrance" so that you can do other things while you wait -- much like the way Battlegrounds are handled.
My friend Joe has to deal with the problem with on his realm and therefore made sure to ask his designated Blizzard representative when he attended the Laguna Art Museum benefit dinner. Producer Carlos Guerrero replied that they needed to upgrade the hardware on the affected realms in order to allow more instances to be launched at the same time. Presumably, that is what the extremely extended downtime was for on Tuesday.
So my question to you is, did it work? Are you meeting the Door Boss with the same regularity, or are you able to enter instances more frequently now that your realm has been upgraded?

The door boss has been an enormous problem on my server for several months. The worst part of all is this was totally self-inflicted by Blizzard and could have been avoided. Reports of the problem started as far back as last Oct. I started experiencing it last Dec. If they were near capacity at the end of BC, then it should have been a given that WOLTK would put them over capacity. Yet it took 10+ months for a final solution. In addition, they knew that patch 3.2 would make things worse and even a blue post to that effect was made on the forums and yet they still dropped patch 3.2 right in the middle of the server fix. That patch should have been delayed a month so the servers could be reconfigured. And the initial customer service responses was very lackluster; remembering the server problems in 2005 (check out some of Mike Morhaime's posts in the archives) gives a stark comparison. Blizzard is a great company but how this was handled by management gives one pause.

Well I don't really care what some blue poster says about multiple extended maintenance to finalize the upgrades. Stormreaver was down until 8pm central last night. That's fucking ridiculous if the issue isn't fixed. I know a few other servers were down the same length yesterday, but before that none of the previously worked on servers received that kind of down time. Also, no yesterday's maintenance made no difference at all for us, so I would say its safe to assume its not going to get better until Blizzard wants it better. Which will probably be around the time 3.3 comes out or 3.22 at the earliest. Its a fairly educated guess but I don't think this additional instances crap is just about the servers, I'm pretty sure its another forced bottleneck. You guys remember those right? Like every time an xpac comes out and there are a whole bunch of quests where you have to pick stuff up and fight opposing faction as well as your own for resources. Or you could just look at how progression for ToC is going, 1 boss a week. Blizzard likes to bottleneck us and slow us down.
Now, please prove me wrong Blizz and fix Stormreaver and the other servers sooner than 3.22, I wants to gear my priest in a week of heroics.

Pro tip: Save your instance running for later at night when kids get shuffled to bed. I know, it's hard for some people, but it sure is easier to play a different game or enjoy a different aspect of WoW while everyone else is hitting their heads against a wall. I can't remember the last time I saw that message. Just an idea, sure works wonders for me.

its 15:51 central, why is burning legion going down, AGAIN?

I try not to respond to posts like this, but it's nigh impossible not to.
Make no mistake fellas, YOU are the problem with the game and, indeed, the gaming community in general. Concerning yourselves with whether or not the game is still "hardcore" is embarassing and childish.
So the game was tougher back before Wrath? Well great, I'm glad you had your fun but that's changed now, and if you ask me, for the better.
Surely you must realize that the "hardcore" WoW that existed pre-BC was a rather awful business position for Blizzard to take. All of the subscribers are paying the same amount to play, so why restrict the best content to those with inordinate amounts of time devoted to raiding?
Blizz really had two choices: 1. Make raids more accessible so that the highest quality content could be seen by more paying customers.
OR
2. Take funding out of developing raids and put it into levelling content. Raids might still be "hardcore", but wouldn't be as big a financial sinkhole, and likely wouldn't be nearly as fun to play.
Ultimately, it's just naive to think that Blizz could put as much work into raids as they do now while still making them "hardcore". It's an unsustainable model or, at the very least, makes little sense for anyone.
Now base-difficulty raids are accessible to pretty much anyone as long as they hit 80, with heroic and hard modes designed for the more dedicated. At the end of the day, we're all paying customers, and we all want to see the end-game content. Think hard modes are a cop-out? Think high-end raiding should still be restricted, despite everyone paying money to play the game?
Then on behalf of all the "terribads" and the "casuals" out there, allow me to say: Good riddance you arrogant, elitist pricks. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I'm on Steamwheedle Cartel which is medium pop. I would get the error occasionally but it would usually only take a couple minutes to get in. We had a couple extended maintenances recently and it seems to be better now, I don't remember seeing it in the past week or so.

Still banging my head against the wall as much as before. I have a screenshot of my pally trying to get into DTK and after 300 attempts there was no luck.
I'd rather have the lag than not be able to get in. This "fix" was retarded and didn't do a gorram thing.
Working as intended.

to answer your question without a lot of useless observations...
Server: Gorefiend
Status: Problem certainly not resolved
Door Boss was kicking our butts all night, just as it did before i waited 8 hours for them to complete maintenance.

Thank you, Robin, for addressing this topic first thing today.
After yesterday's events and then the realization that the Additional Instance problem was still not fixed, I would have been quite disappointed to see the issue not being addressed on WoW.com.
As to whether it is premature to ask this question, I would have to say "no, it is not" since it is only through reading these comments that I have learned that the Fix may take two maintenance days (based on others' experience). There are also the few comments that give us hope, letting us know that on those servers who have had the double dose of maintenance, the problem has been resolved.
Additionally, we see there are those who still have no idea how much some servers have been suffering over the past month. "Stop your whining about a 5-minute wait!" etc.
Maybe these people are starting to understand how HUGE the problem has been.
Personally, I didn't even try to get into an instance last night, guessing that the problem had not been solved and not wanting to be disappointed. I just tooled around BloodMyst with a Level 12 Paladin alt. Soloed Deathclaw! Yay!
Here's to hoping the issue is solved soon...
Please keep us informed.

Dear Hardcores whose self worth is based on gear,
Good to hear from you again.
Is your Mom's basement nice?
Clydtsdk-Rivendare Sep 2nd 2009 4:12PM
Rivendare has not had this problem in my experience.
Hey, what's that sound? I think it's the wind from all those server transfers...
