Official Cataclysm forum opens
The official WoW forums got another section today, one dedicated to the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion Cataclysm. There's nothing useful in the at the moment, like a roundup of everything Blizzard has posted about the third expansion, or short bullet pointed lists of major features (although we have such information in our Guide to Cataclysm).
These forums are open to the general WoW population, and are NOT the alpha / beta forums. The alpha has NOT begun yet. But things are at least moving in the direction of more Cataclysm presence in WoW's official community.
With Cataclysm expected to be released in 2010 (remember, according to Mike Morhaime, not us), we should start seeing greater details about what was announced at BlizzCon in the next couple months. Lots of good stuff to know, and hopefully this forum will be a conduit for Blizzard's old top hats like Ghostcrawler to begin some more detailed information dissemination.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will destroy Azeroth as we know it. Nothing will be the same. In WoW.com's Guide to Cataclysm you can find out everything you need to know about WoW's third expansion. From Goblins and Worgens to Mastery and Guild changes, it's all there for your cataclysmic enjoyment.Filed under: Blizzard, Forums, Cataclysm, News items

Myself and my guild are currently pretty divided on the whole "Overlap Content" thing, and now to have the forum go up on this coming patch with us unlocking heroic 10 man, and having a wipefest on Anub in 25, theres a lot of demorilazation amongst raiders on my server...Ulduar has kind of become old news already, and theres hardly a majority of 80's with the 10 or 25 Yogg ach.
I'd just hate for this to be another Sunwell scenario where most people never even got to see Brutallis up close, and try to revisit it puggish at the new level cap.

All this talk about Cataclysm will die down again once people realize it's at LEAST six months away, and no more information is coming out. I don't think there will be a steady stream of new info like people are expecting.
The focus will turn once again to the Lich King and 3.3, and plus the summer is ending so people will be raiding on a more regular basis, getting achievements, etc.

Well, while I'm inclined to agree with you for my own selfish reasons, I also see the other side of the argument. The guilds that get to see every scrap of raiding content in the game put a pretty crazy amount of time into the game. Write this off as dedication or pathetic as you will, the fact is they have done the work to be there.
If you give everyone in the world time to finish a raid before releasing new content, the players that do it in a week will be long gone to greener pastures. While some may say "good riddance," or "well that's a very small percentage of the population," these are also the people that put out guides, videos, and addons that get the rest of us through this content. The only other other viable option (which has been done) is to keep releasing content on a steady basis, remove attunments and allow everyone access, then let the cards fall as the may.
On top of this, Blizzard has also allowed all the encounters to be tackled with only 10 people, and has defaulted them to "easy mode," once again allowing more access to the majority of the player base.
I personally really like where raiding is right now. I may never do the hard modes or get a world or server first, but at least our small guild is getting to see the content this time around. We're having a great time, and that's what its all about right?

You won't be seeing Cataclysm for at least 4-8 months. I'm sure you'll have plenty of people experience Yogg by then, not to mention much if not all of the Trial Champions.
Because the news about the expansion has been so freely dispersed, it doesn't mean that it's just around the monthly corner...

Can someone explain the difference to me between alpha and beta in testing terms?
V Magius Sep 2nd 2009 2:49PM
Basically, there's a cycle that software goes through.
Alpha is one of the initial stages. The developers have programmed in everything they want and tested it among themselves.
Beta, the software has received the developers seal of approval. Now it's time for the next stage where the odd balls abuse the system. At this point, it's a vicious cycle of going back to development.
Then, it goes gold and hits shelves.

Alpha is the really buggy initial phase when stuff is still bring added in and implemented. Alot of alpha stuff is completely unfinished, unrendered, or just plain not even in the game yet. Beta means it is closer to finalized, when the game has most of the stuff implemented and just need to work out the kinks.
