Alpha is the really buggy initial phase when stuff is still bring added in and implemented. Alot of alpha stuff is completely unfinished, unrendered, or just plain not even in the game yet. Beta means it is closer to finalized, when the game has most of the stuff implemented and just need to work out the kinks.
