Ghostcrawler on the Path of the Titans

He clarifies the idea more later in the thread as well. The different paths of the Titans are meant to be class-independent, but GC says that they do want players to debate which path is best for which class, even if they do end up with a "best" solution in the end. Archaeology is meant to be a part of it, so GC agrees that it could be more of a mandatory secondary profession than Cooking or Fishing has been in the past, but they're aware of that danger. And just because the paths may be tied to dailies or instances doesn't mean they'll work the same: the time in which you can progress might be longer than the daily quest limit or shorter than the weekly raid limit. The idea, as above, is to give players who don't necessarily raid or PvP something else to do with character progression at endgame.
Should be interesting to see what they come up with. Personally, this sounds a little bit to me like D&D's prestige classes -- not nearly as powerful or varied, but a way of separating your character out from the rest of those that chose the same class you did. That's just me being hopeful, though -- Blizzard seems to have a lot of development before we see this as a finished product.

This reminds me a lot of EQ or EQ2's AA points or paths. More similar to EQ2 in that it's a path rather than just a lot of abilities or stats from alternate exp. This is a very very exciting feature in Cataclysm to me. More character customization even if there is a "best" one is great!

I'm surprised nobody else mentioned the similarity to AA's. Until we see it in action, I'm going to have a hard time believing that this isn't just one more major timesink before people will think you're qualified to raid, and a huge detriment to ever having an alt.

@Cheesemonkey:
I'm scared too :-/
I guess when Cataclysm drops, there will be less stuff on EJ for people to be not able to understand.

From the screen shot it sorta reminds me of the sphere grid from FFX.

And that itself makes it all the more cooler.
Rhabella Sep 3rd 2009 2:29PM
This is exactly what I was thinking!

I also immediately thought of the sphere grid, which I LOVED. Almost made dealing with Tidus worth it.
Almost.
Anyways, this looks good for role-players and non min/maxers as well as raiders.

I never liked the sphere grid, it ended up making all the characters identical, separated only by which spheres you took

This is exactly what I thought, the first time I saw and heard about it! And, I completely agree that this fact only makes Path of the Titans that much cooler.
I remember feeling somewhat hesitant about the sphere grid in FFX, at first. Then, after getting used to it, I really liked it very much. I'm not even hesitant about Path of the Titans, though, and I already love the looks of it and think it looks incredibly promising.
I think this is a fantastic way to allow players who don't have time to raid and aren't that into pvp, to progress and have fun with their characters at end levels. I also like how Path of the Titans seems like a way to really individualize your toon and make it more your own.
I'm beyond excited about Archaeology, as well. I absolutely LOVE the idea of how these two things will most likely go hand-in-hand. And, I can't wait to learn more about it.

At the end of FFX, you could eventually have every character having the exact same grid, giving them all identical abilities.
Coincedence, much?
kev-dogg Sep 4th 2009 5:56AM
Yup, this is exactly what I thought of when I saw the screen shot. I know alot of folks say the Materia system in FFVII was the best thing ever, but I really did like the Sphere Grid more. You didn't have to grind out level after level of Materia in order to get everyone in your party with a 5 Star Ultima spell. All you had to do was play the game, level normally, collect spheres and pretty much pick and choose where you started and where you wanted to go with your characters beyond their given "purpose" in the game.
I'm excited for the Path of the Titans, its probably what I'm looking forward to most in the Cataclysm.

I still can't say I understand exactly how this is going to work, though I hope we are going to see a sequence of quests. Something along the line of the quests which opened up new zones/instances in Final Fantasy XI though I don't expect it to be as exclusive in that sense.
Still I am very excited to see exactly how this plays out and whether people will feel this is content and not another time sink (for those of us who play a lot).
Boz Sep 4th 2009 8:35AM
I can't wrap my head around it either; it just sounds like yet another stat tree to manage, as if we didn't have enough between itemization, consumable buffs, enchanting, gemming, our talent tree, and glyphs.
Then again, what's one more level of complexity on top of all that?
Scien Sep 3rd 2009 2:14PM
I can imagine myself already spending half an hour on Elitist Jerks trying to decipher their... jargon, to see which will be the best path for a tankadin =P
I kid, IMO, anything that opens up more discussion is fine by me!
Mynarc Sep 3rd 2009 2:23PM
You try to understand what the "jerks" are saying? i just skip to the conculsion :P
Tom Sep 3rd 2009 2:32PM
For Tankadin matters, check out the Maintankadin forums: http://maintankadin.failsafedesign.com/
The community is MUCH better than EJ. :P
Scien Sep 3rd 2009 2:36PM
Haha, thanks for the link Tom
Jorges Sep 3rd 2009 3:38PM
I like EJ, but only to have an idea.. a "guidance". I know they are mostly right on their conclusions, but sometimes I feel they exagerate the min/max topic. I mean, almost all of their info is based on a perfect case scenario, wich is almost never the case. So I prefer to just have an idea of where to go and I take it from there.
Amaxe Sep 3rd 2009 3:40PM
Their "sum up" articles can be useful when they bother to update them (last time I checked, some of their Shaman stuff was still TBC vintage).
... but they do certainly live up to their name, which is why I seldom go there anymore :-/
Cheesemonkey Sep 3rd 2009 6:30PM
Am I the only person who knows exactly what they're saying?
Now i'm scared ._.
