Survey: Figuring out the faction transfer numbers

Obviously, we don't have access to all of Blizzard's audience, and our polls are definitely much less scientific than the data Blizzard gets to look at (you better believe they're tracking transfers and faction and race choices with a close eye, just as they're tracking server populations 24/7), but just for the heck of it, we'll ask. After the break, we've got a few polls designed to give us a very general look at how transfers are playing out so far. There's a lot of anecdotal experiences flying around since transfers went live, but I'd like to know, a little more objectively, just how things are panning out.
The first poll is simple: it's designed to let us know just how many players (in this case, readers of WoW.com, so at least a good sample of NA and EU players) have actually used the transfer service. Everyone should answer this.
| Yes | |
|---|---|
| No |
The second poll, to be answered only by people who have transferred factions already, should show us which way the transfers are going: from Alliance to Horde, from Horde to Alliance, or even:
| I went from Alliance to Horde. | |
|---|---|
| I went from Horde to Alliance. |
These next two polls are only for people who have transferred, and please only answer the poll that fits your faction transfer. While race choice on the faction transfers is limited by class, it should be interesting to see what people who are transferring factions are choosing in terms of races. And Blizzard will definitely be watching their versions of these numbers in their calculations, as they update racial bonuses and experiences in Cataclysm.
| Blood Elf | |
|---|---|
| Tauren | |
| Troll | |
| Orc | |
| Forsaken |
| Draenei | |
|---|---|
| Human | |
| Night Elf | |
| Gnome | |
| Dwarf |
Finally, for those of you who didn't transfer factions yet, the last poll asks if we'll see another big burst of faction transfers when Cataclysm releases, or at least when the Cataclysm races are available for transfer (Blizzard stated at BlizzCon that while they hadn't decided yet, transfers to the new races probably wouldn't be available right at release).
| Yes, I haven't transferred yet, but I plan to when Cataclysm comes out. | |
|---|---|
| No, I haven't transferred yet, and I don't plan to. |
Thanks for answering! If the results are surprising enough, we'll take a look at what they might mean in a future post.

i transfered my horde priest to Rexxar from Khadgar then faction transfered.
I gave him up along time ago and missed him.
zappo Sep 4th 2009 5:43PM
Yeah, I'm seeing a lot of people like that. They used to play one faction, then decided to re-roll and play the other. But still missing that one they abandoned. Now they have the chance to bring that character over and play them. It's not like they're really changing factions in that case because they're still playing the same one, just bringing an older one off the side they don't play any longer.

@zappo:
That's exactly what it was for me. I had an Alliance toon that I abandoned. Now I'm really excited to play her again as a Hordling.

Yep! Same here. I started playing WoW with a friend and rolled a Human Pally. Leveled him up to 70 and then we decided to try out the Horde. Been there ever since. So happy that I didn't lose all the work I put into the Pally and now I can play her again! /joy

its funny, i want to do the opposite... i started out horde, levelled a bunch of characters, and a couple to 70 in bc, but then switched to alliance in wrath, because my main servers had an abominable queue, and i had a level 70 alliance druid on another server that i figured i'd play until the madness died down. Unfortunately (or maybe not), i REALLY loved playing her, so i ended up getting her to 80, then just kept on rolling alliance alts on that server.
Now i've got 2 80's and two chars at level 74, along with a pile of alts swimming in heirlooms. But i really, REALLY miss the horde, and ideally i'd like to transfer at least FOUR of the chars i've levelled in wrath to horde, and then server change them to my old server. But at $220 US for that, it seems like it will be a long way off...

I'm leveling a belf hunter to see the world from the other perspective. When she hits 80, I'll probably bring her to Alliance so I can play her with friends.

i transferred yesterday to a BE pally and i found out u can kinda cheat with the reputation as it just equally transfers it to the equivalent faction but i can do all the quests for the hord now and i can get all the rep for them too. i dont know how it works with anything but the main hord factions in northrend but im guessing i can go back and do all the old world quests and get exalted pritty easy. also i dont know if it resets any of the neutral questchains ether.

Now learn to spell Horde! :P

Alliance players have been hearing for years that Blizzard favors the horde. Whether they do or not, I rarely hear anyone accuse Blizzard of an alliance bias.
Another point- if you look at the realm population ratios, PvP servers tend to have a horde imbalance, and PvE servers tend to have an alliance imbalance. One one of those two options, you can not choose whether you want to get ganked.
ziggler Sep 4th 2009 4:30PM
funny, never heard that, only the opposite :x
Malkavos Sep 4th 2009 4:38PM
I've played on both sides of the fence, just recently transferred and faction changed my newer main back to horde side.
When I played Horde, everyone always complained about Blizzard favoring the Alliance, so I just kinda went along with it. When I began playing Ally, I noticed that everyone over there loved to complain about Blizzard's Horde bias.
My conclusion: it's just a grass is greener on the other side kind of a thing. There are differences that each side likes to harp on, but there's not really any bias either way on blizzard's part.
Jalaris.Ghostlands Sep 4th 2009 5:37PM
I've played both sides of a battlegroup. Both of which complained about how bad their side sucked in BGs. Now I just laugh when someone complains.
Terethall Sep 4th 2009 6:59PM
When was the last time you met someone who said that their faction was over powered and over populated? Everyone perceives bias against them and favor towards their enemies.
Kellerune Sep 4th 2009 4:22PM
I haven't read into the faction changes and all that because I don't really care for them, as in I won't use them. But will PvP servers now be able to have horde and alliance on them? Because it seems like a PvP server that all your toons are alli on shouldn't be able to have one horde toon just because you paid the 30 bucks to switch. Because that was Blizzard's intention initially.
Kellerune Sep 4th 2009 4:26PM
Nevermind... I just created a horde toon on my PvP server. So I guess Blizzard changed their ideas and values... AGAIN.
Millea Sep 4th 2009 4:36PM
They already have this allowed.
They did it so that the faction changes could happen
Tridus Sep 4th 2009 4:23PM
The forums and the like have a certain bias, because they also bias towards a certain type of player. Actually getting meaningful numbers out of this will be impossible simply because you need either the raw data, or a statistically valid sample.
We have neither.
(And the amount of territory Blizzard is handing over to the Horde in Cataclysm makes calls of bias even easier then back in the day when racials were ridiculously biased.)
Malfural Sep 4th 2009 4:40PM
I finally found an interview where they mention alliance taking some revenge: "Camp Taurajo is burned down and attacked by the Alliance"

It's not much, but it's a start.
