I think it is unfortunate that Blizz is going to try to justify it from the perspective of "they always had the potential." Rather it would have made sense to say "after this many years of the existence of the Horde/Alliance, people of one race were exposed to the teachings of the other races.
But instead we're going to see Blizz try to make us swallow Tauren Paladins and Nelf mages and the structures to teach them suddenly appearing among us as opposed to taking years of study to become the lore equivalent of Max Level.
Cataclysm sounds good, but its the illogic of the race/class combos that annoy me. Just let all races be able to be all classes and be done with it. Humans can decide to serve Elune and become Druids, Taurens exposed to the Argent Crusade can follow the Light and become paladins. Nelfs who study in Dalaran can become mages and so on.
I think their trying to say "Lore always allowed it" is what is ruining it.

You might be right, but your example of nelfs is a very poor one.
No need for night elf mages to go to Dalaran to train arcane magic... Not only did night elves practice magic 10,000 years ago (and a number of those elves are alive) but there are factions (at least one) of night elves in-game RIGHT NOW that practice arcane magic (Shen'dralar).

The point remains there is no reason for Blizz to retcon when they have a simple and workable solution.
WoW lore shows Nelfs have a strong opposition to mages on account of their history. So we have two options: Option 1 shows how existing Nelfs can learn magery by the interaction with cultures which study magic.
Option 2 requires a somewhat Mary-Sue kind of story where Nelfs go off to some obscure place to learn with Nelf outcasts and suddenly Darnassus decides it is ok to be a Mage ("Hey, High Elves... sorry we kicked you guys out 7800 years ago. No hard feelings?")
Which seems more believable?

Tyrande pardoned Illidan (and killed a bunch of her own people to free him) when things were looking bad with the Burning Legion. I don't think it's that farfetched to see her allowing Night Elf mages to rejoin the fold, especially with all hell breaking loose.
