The point remains there is no reason for Blizz to retcon when they have a simple and workable solution.

WoW lore shows Nelfs have a strong opposition to mages on account of their history. So we have two options: Option 1 shows how existing Nelfs can learn magery by the interaction with cultures which study magic.

Option 2 requires a somewhat Mary-Sue kind of story where Nelfs go off to some obscure place to learn with Nelf outcasts and suddenly Darnassus decides it is ok to be a Mage ("Hey, High Elves... sorry we kicked you guys out 7800 years ago. No hard feelings?")

Which seems more believable?
