Keybindings and how to change them

And then she hits on something else I've been dealing with lately, too: changing what you've got. Setting up your keybinds is one thing, but actually changing them can be tougher.
For instance, my Hunter has always had Hunter's Mark attached to the 5 key -- that was the easiest and quickest place for me to put it when I was setting things up, and so I've trained myself, whenever I am about to start shooting a target, to smash the 5 key and move on. But I have Arcane Shot sitting on the 6, and Explosive Shot (when I'm in that spec) sitting on the 4. That can cause problems, as you might have guessed: reach up to mark a target before the fight, accidentally hit the Arcane Shot, and then I get labeled as a noob for pulling early (probably a deserved title for many reasons, but still). So I decided to switch the mark away from there, and put it somewhere else more out of the way.
But instinctively, as I've been hitting 5 for Hunter's Mark for so long, I would reach up and hit 5 again whenever I entered combat -- I had a lot of trouble retraining my reflexes to hit something else. I only really tried to change for about an hour, but at that point I had to run off to a raid, and rather than making mistakes during a raid setting, I just went ahead and moved the keys back.
I presume that if I gave it more time, I would eventually learn the difference (we humans are nothing if not adaptable), but I was definitely surprised to see just how ingrained my reflexes were with the key presses. xella says she wants to change as well, and most people recommend what I would do (and what I'll probably have to do if I really want to change) -- just take the time to practice and re-learn the keys. It's interesting that we can change keybindings in seconds, but especially if we've built up experience over time, it's much harder to change the way we move.

So true.
I tried out switching my talents to a more access-everything build (playing my warlock at the time) and set movement to YGHJ. Using the 1-4-Z-V space for skills.
Felt like I was casting Hellfire on myself.
Switched back after half an hour.

After a lot of experimenting, I came up with my current layout:
WSAD for movement.
Mouse side-buttons (at least 2, the more the better, though) and modifiers (alt, shift, control) mapped to my main rotation.
E and Q mapped to AOE skills (2 too, depending on class/spec).
3, 4, 5 (and modifiers, if needed) mapped to frequently used skills.
Everything else (middle mouse button, R, F, X, C etc) is mapped to OPie rings that bring up items, defensive cooldowns, mounts and everything else.
Takes a bit of practice but works like a charm once you get it down. You don't impair your movement and camera control in any way, changing specs isn't very painful and everything is within reach (I've never understood why people bind to Z).

Other than using ESDF for movement keys (I don't have to move my hand at all to type and have access to more keys) I have mine setup very similar. ESDF moves and all instant abilities are bound to one of the 7 mouse side/top buttons so I don't lose any movement control while using them. Anything with a casting time and my cooldowns go on any one of WRTAGZXCVH as I won't need to be moving them while casting. Anything used mainly out of combat goes on 1-0, raid marks are on the number pad. Following a system like this means it's really easy to swap from character to character as I generally have them all setup the same way.
I also like to remove every ability from my action bars once a month or two and put them all back to see if they make sense in their locations. Too many times abilities end up being dropped somewhere without any thought like Mike's Hunter's Mark.

How do you type without moving your hand?
Brouck Sep 6th 2009 4:15PM
I think I must be doing this whole keyboard thing the wrong way. I use my right hand on my keypad, able to access 1-9, 0, . and enter. These are all mapped to my favorite spells etc. I use my left hand to manipulate the mouse or arrow keys. Is there a better way?

L2not key turn?
1. right hand on mouse - holding both mouse buttons to move
2. keybind "move backwards" to the middle mouse button
3. download on of the man programs that allow you to set the mouse's side button to = the "shift" key.
4. keybind your mouse's other side button to "auto run", so you can mouse target quickly without having to stop
5. You may now use your entire keyboard to keybind anything and everything wherever your heart desires
If you dont have a 5-button mouse, think about getting one. they really make a difference

*man programs = many programs =P

They really only make a difference when you want them to. I play the game very well with my Apple Mighty Mouse, with secondary and tertiary clicks disabled.
deluded spider Sep 6th 2009 5:37PM
@Mike - Ditto. I always had a PC til about June, when I finally got an iMac. I fully expected that I'd hate the Mighty Mouse and wouldn't be able to play WoW with it, but then I realized it wasn't difficult at all to use the Mighty Mouse, even for raiding. So I never got around to buying another mouse.
The scrollball is automatically set to function the same as holding down two mouse buttons on a "regular" mouse, so I just do that. And I use one of those Z-Board Fang things (it was on clearance) for "keyboard turning" (strafing, etc) with my left hand. Never have gotten used to using the number buttons on it, though.
deluded spider Sep 6th 2009 5:41PM
Oh.. Thought I should specify, I do use right-click on the Mighty Mouse, which I think Mike said he did not. Do you use Cmd-click or something instead? I had a friend who played on a Macbook Pro before it was easy to right-click, I think he did it that way.

@ hades
You forgot strafe, a very important part of fluid character movement imo.
I use w,s (forward, backward) although I only use w in rare situations. Then q,e (strafe left, right). This frees up r, f, d, a ,z , x, c, f, r, v 1-5 (i save 6 7 8 9 0 - = for stuff I don't use much). So basically my hand can easily reach left half of keyboard with a few keys reserved for movement, I assume this is how most of the crowd handles it.
Oh yeah, and I have the g15 keyboard which I can use for my "cool stuff" like macros, trinkets, mounts, etc. I love that keyboard, and would recommend it to anyone. I have been hammering on those keys for years and it is still in perfect condition.
Hades Sep 6th 2009 6:36PM
@mike
strafing is definitely a good thing. i have a couple keybinds in case i need to strafe, which does happen, but honestly you can turn so incredibly quick when moving with your mouse, strafing isnt necessary as much as it is with key-turning.
i key-turned for a long time, and i got by just fine with it in pve. when i started to pvp more competitively is when i couldnt get buy with key turning. just cant move quick enough.
I could care less if a raid member key turns or not, as long as they don't suck they can play using the gun from Duck Hunt if it works for them. I just find it a huge competitive edge in pve and pvp to move with my mouse.
Hades Sep 6th 2009 6:38PM
ugh, @EZ....not mike
lazymangaka Sep 6th 2009 7:35PM
I experimented with that with my warrior last night. As a righty, having to move my hand between my mouse and the keypad was a bit odd at first but having 12 or so buttons in easy reach was a hugely enjoyable thing. I've since switched back, but I might end up making that my go-to key binding.
Camaris Sep 7th 2009 6:39AM
Isn't moving sideways while holding the right mouse button the same as strafing?
Strange.. these movements have become so second nature that I find it hard to think about exactly how they work.
AlmtyBob Sep 7th 2009 4:56PM
Yes, holding right click while pressing turn left/right is the exact same thing as strafing.
Firestride Sep 6th 2009 4:16PM
Any number past 5 is not your friend. But R, F, C, X, and Z ARE your friends!. Shift-R has been my goto combat beginner since I was in my 30s, and it's how I get into tree or moonkin now. Shift-Z hits up my mount, and Z alone throws me into flight form (or travel form, because I have an awesome macro). If you have average size hands, or larger, don't be afraid to Shift-1 through Shift-5 as well.
I recently added in Caps Lock, as my !Form macro. That might end up being used for a skill that I use more often, though.
And of course, if you are ever healing yourself, throw Healbot on there so that you can take all your healing spells off your bars.
Kaphik Sep 6th 2009 8:24PM
I have big hands, I can hit TAB and ENTER with my pinky and thumb if I stretch. :) It doesn't take much for me to slide over to use all the number keys, but the t through = key are lesser used abilities.
sgtteamkill Sep 6th 2009 4:18PM
Seriously? A how to key bind guide? Wow
Aigarius Sep 6th 2009 4:34PM
I know people that have leveled to 50+ without knowing about the AH, I am sure there is a lot of people out there that do not know that you can change the keybindings and that you really should do that.
