Keybindings and how to change them

And then she hits on something else I've been dealing with lately, too: changing what you've got. Setting up your keybinds is one thing, but actually changing them can be tougher.
For instance, my Hunter has always had Hunter's Mark attached to the 5 key -- that was the easiest and quickest place for me to put it when I was setting things up, and so I've trained myself, whenever I am about to start shooting a target, to smash the 5 key and move on. But I have Arcane Shot sitting on the 6, and Explosive Shot (when I'm in that spec) sitting on the 4. That can cause problems, as you might have guessed: reach up to mark a target before the fight, accidentally hit the Arcane Shot, and then I get labeled as a noob for pulling early (probably a deserved title for many reasons, but still). So I decided to switch the mark away from there, and put it somewhere else more out of the way.
But instinctively, as I've been hitting 5 for Hunter's Mark for so long, I would reach up and hit 5 again whenever I entered combat -- I had a lot of trouble retraining my reflexes to hit something else. I only really tried to change for about an hour, but at that point I had to run off to a raid, and rather than making mistakes during a raid setting, I just went ahead and moved the keys back.
I presume that if I gave it more time, I would eventually learn the difference (we humans are nothing if not adaptable), but I was definitely surprised to see just how ingrained my reflexes were with the key presses. xella says she wants to change as well, and most people recommend what I would do (and what I'll probably have to do if I really want to change) -- just take the time to practice and re-learn the keys. It's interesting that we can change keybindings in seconds, but especially if we've built up experience over time, it's much harder to change the way we move.

I used to use the Numpad for casting on my Shadow Priest, but now use the GKeys on my G11 keyboard. This meant going from left to right handed casting, and still slip up now and then when going from a vehicle(Getting launched on FL), since my vehicle/MC buttons are still on the numpad. I also use the numpad for situational buttons for macros(MC macros, /assists macros, /tar chains).

@ sgtteamkill:
Whist the article is titled "how to" it isn't really...
The how to buisiness is easy, the training of the muscle-memory thing isn't. I remember when the 3.2 changes resulted in me swapping my "1" and "2" keys round - think that I spent 20 minutes in front of a training dummy before getting dragged into DTK...
So, you might want to read the article before slagging it off because your goldfish-like attention span can't get past the title.

I too use the numberpad a lot. Movement with left hand, middle-mouseclick is auto-run, and main healing spells on 1 (flash) and 2 (big), with with instaheals (i.e. holy shock), on 3. Likewise, cleansing is on F1 as it's not that hard of a reach. (NOTE: Never put cleans on F4. Bad mojo when cleansing yourself! LOL)
For the less-used spells, I put them on the number pad. Exorcism, Hammer of Justice, Hammer of Wrath, Consecrate, Rez, etc. So I can see it graphically on the screen, I use Dominoes and made it look just like the number pad, and bound the keys to match.

I still use WASD and QE for movement/strafing, but I have shift and control modifiers on nearly every one of those buttons. I only use 1-5 (and modifiers) for my normal attacks, C for Flamestrike/Blizzard (spec-dependent), T for Polymorph, Shift-R for Mana Gem, Shift-E for Evocation, Z for Counterspell....all those keys really need to be used, people. Unbind that damned "Unsheath/Sheath Weapon" shit and put something useful on your keyboards. You can do it.

On my first toon, I had lots of abilities going all the way up to 7 or 8, and that was with three rows for Shift- and Ctrl- strokes as well. Eventually I found that I just couldn't get over to those buttons very well, so I changed what I have on the number keys. I've got three rows, going from ` to 4, mapped with my most used abilities. Then I have another action bar, set up with F1 through F3 (with Shift- and Ctrl-), which gives me a nice set of situational and emergency buttons. Pots, rarely used totems, Purge. It works for me, and changing the system just confuses me.

I dont use Keybindings.
Yep, you heard that right, I dont use keybindings in any way, shape or form, call me a noob, unorthodox, whatever, I am not going to change anything.
This is my setup(arcane mage):
WDSA(movement)
1=my wand, 2=remove curse, 3=counterspell, 4=spellsteal, 5=ice block, 6=invisibilty,7=evocation, 8=arcane explosion, 9=arcane missiles, 0=arcane blast, (-)=arcane barrage
(=)= my macro to pop arcane power and icy viens at same time
I use my mouse to activate these for my rotation and cooldown useage, its what Ive always done ,and its what I will continue ot do. I do raid, and a do put out fairly competent DPS. I dont see the reason(let alone actual need) for me to relearn how to do my rotation and activate my cooldowns if what I am using already is working.
Rugus Sep 6th 2009 6:10PM
Same happened to me for like 1 year and a half. Then one day I decided to give it a try and macroed/mapped few keys (Q, E, SHIFT+LEFTCLICK). My gameplay experience, DPS and PvP performances got a *HUGE* boost after a short training (few keybinds = fast learning curve).
I know your feelings because I'm a "clicker" like you and my rotation consists of actually clicking the bottom/right screen icons. But my goal is to bind/macro more stuff and reduce the clicking action to the minimum. It makes a difference, a huge one.
Give it a try, it really changes the whole experience. You will react much better to events and overall offer get better DPS and surivability. You just need to accept the initial bad feeling of re-learning things.
AlmtyBob Sep 7th 2009 5:08PM
There's a difference between not fixing what's not broken and not wanting to better yourself. You think you're the former when you're the latter, like all clickers. Just because you can pull enough DPS as a clicker that you don't get /gkicked doesn't mean you're doing it right. Start by binding a couple of keys (that you can hit while moving) to your most commonly used abilities and add a new key or two each week. Practice on Icecrown mobs or target dummies, don't rebind right before a raid.
Aigarius Sep 6th 2009 4:30PM
As a right-hander - right hand for the mouse only.
Left hand lays on the wasd keys for movement, q and e for strafing, 1-90-= mapped to main abilities, F1-F12 to secondary abilities on a bar that is just above the main bar. F,G and H to often used abilities that change all the time, but mostly G stays for Healthstone and H for Mana Gem. I put all the abilities in my primary rotation as 1-4 with emergency escape at 5 within easy reach. F1-F4 are secondary abilities, like healing or instacast attacks. F5-F8 are reserved for power-up abilities like trinkets and such. Usually I know that if I need power and I need it now I can just slam down the whole block of keys (F5-F8) and be at my max.
So bottom bar from 6 and top bar from F9 has all kinds of situational abilities that are rarely used, but sometimes are needed in combat.
For out-of-combat spells I use the right toolbars and AutoBars addon and mouseclick those.
Z-N I have mapped to mob marking. I do it rarely nowadays, but it was the greatest thing ever when I was leading a raid.
Aigarius Sep 6th 2009 4:33PM
Also not that for my rotations on all toons I try to put spells in order - first spell to be used should always be '1', then '2', then '3'. Most often used spells must be before rarely used spells. So as an arcane mage I have Arcane Blast as 1, Arcane Missiles as 2 and Arcane Barrage as 3. As a Fire mage I have Living Bomb as 1, Fireball as 2, Pyroblast as 3 and Scorch as 4.
Rickfert Sep 6th 2009 4:36PM
Personally, I use the ~ key for my most used things.
Hunter: Petattack/Hunters Mark macro.
DK: Death Grip
Rogue: Stealth
etc
And I purposely move my hunters mark by itself to an Alt- keybinding so I have to think abouit it instead of accidentally pulling early
m_rydelis Sep 6th 2009 4:36PM
I still use WASD, 1to9 keys, but I also use Q and E for most needed or most used spells, that saves some time, and space. And I have been trying to skip macros, but 2 years ago I found that macros save so much space: all shaman shocks in one key(modified by Shift, Alt, CTRL), elemental shields in one macro, weapon enchantsments, heals and for the last totems, that we dont need to worry about now, mounts in one macro.
so in short use macros!

I never really liked the original keybinding set-up for WoW. Forcing yourself to move away from the movement keys never really seemed that intuitive to me. I've moved my movement keys from WASD to RDFG, and that lets me map more keys (a full 10) around my movement instead of above them. It's worked out very well, even though I'm considering moving them one more key over to TFGH to get more keys to the left side of my hand.
Ace Sep 6th 2009 4:49PM
@Torr - It really just depends on what you're doing...and as long as it's working for you, great! I got along fine on my arcane mage with no keybindings other than the initial action bar, as well as keyboard turning ... until I started to pvp. Once I learned to move with the mouse and bind stuff that I needed to be able to hit in a split second without moving my entire hand (spellsteal, blink, ice block, counterspell, etc) it made a huge difference in my performance.
Mike Sep 6th 2009 5:01PM
I use 1-9,0,-,= for actions, but I also set backtick (`) and backspace to extend the action bar. Generally I'll set backtick to exclusively opening moves (Hand of Reckoning, Death Grip, Lightning Bolt, Charge, etc), so with backspace gives me 13 action keys total. I also remove Attack from the action bar, since T is default set to attack anyway and is much easier to initiate quick combat. I also set hack (\) to autowalk, with mounts (and Ghost Wolf for Shaman) on shift/alt/control modifiers on hack.
morkuma Sep 6th 2009 5:07PM
been using the logitech g13 for a couple weeks now, and am REALLY used to using the thumbstick for movement and have 22 buttons and two thumb buttons that i have various macro's etc setup for, and it just is sometimes hard to use the kb anymore
Mistat Sep 6th 2009 5:10PM
Interesting seeing other people's setups on their keyboards.
I have my keys bound bunched around the WASD movement keys
1-6, Q,X,E,R,T,Y, plus Shift and Alt bindings of those make up my 3 core ability bars on my hunter. I use X for my hunter's mark, which puts it well away from any of my active combat shots, and my primary combat shots that I'm always hitting go on 2-5.
1 tosses up serpent sting
2 - Chimera(MM)/Black Arrow(SV)
3 - Aimed Shot
4 - Steady Shot
5 - Arcane(MM)/Explosive(SV)
6 - Multi-Shot
Q - Mend Pet
X - Hunter's Mark
E - Kill Shot
R - Silencing Shot(MM)/Don't remember what it used to be in SV
T - Trinket Popping Macro
Y - Tranquilizing Shot (It's amazing how many people don't use this regularly, but I've always found it handy to have right there, and the Y key is out of the way, but convenient when it's needed)
Dragoniel Sep 6th 2009 5:11PM
It really amazes me how people can play with number keys only. And that astonishing number of people are using Q and E keys for strafing. I mean - you can strafe by pressing A or D while holding right mouse button... Q, E, R, T, F, G, C, V and even Z and X are the most convenient keys available on standard keyboard. You dont have to move your wrist in order to press them and with SHIFT, CTRL and ALT modifiers you can bind ~70% of your abilities right below your fingers, leaving number keys row and numpad for buffs and other less frequently used abilities.
I'm PvP'er to the bone and in serious PvP one has to do several decisions each second and wasting half of that time just to reach for the key is... not wise.
That said I'm also using a mouse with 4 additional buttons, each binded with SHIFT too, making +8 buttons in total. And I wish I had at least 2 more buttons.
When starting an alt I usually spend 2-4 hours just figuring the most convenient way to bind all my abilities so that I could use them eyes closed in the very moment I need it.
I have everything binded, from main nuke to non-combat pets and portals. In my whole wow career I've never mouse clicked anything. I even have a special keybind assigned for quest items.
Super Healer Sep 9th 2009 9:24AM
I use the arrow keys for main movement and bind the few abilities I use most often to side buttons on my mouse as well as the DEL, END, PGDWN buttons around the arrow keys (and some to the numeric keypad buttoms close to it) so the mouse is just for movement like straffing and turning etc.
However this will all change when the Razer Naga comes out - I prefer using the mouse rather than keyboard so 14+ buttons on my mouse is a dream come true.
Ayiano Sep 6th 2009 5:20PM
My setup is pretty complicated.
I use W, S to move forward and back; A, D to strafe. I turn with my right mouse button (much quicker than holding down keys, and frees up two vital keys).
The other keys I use for spells are all around the movement keys: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Q, E, R, T, F, G, Z, X, C, V, & B. Through a large number of macros and/or BindPad bindings (depending on the toon) I have virtually all my spells and abilities available without moving my hand. My most-used or most important spells are bound without modifiers to the keys immediately around my movement keys. Other spells are then bound to the same keys via [shift + key] or [ctrl + key]. [alt +key] is reserved for self-casting (vital in PvP). Some abilities even change depending on what I'm targeting (friendly or enemy).
For example:
Q = Flash Heal (targeting/mouseover friendly)
Q = Mind Blast (if targeting enemy)
Shift + Q = Prayer of Healing
Alt + Q = Flash Heal (self)
