Ready Check: Koralon the Flame Watcher

Ready Check is a column focusing on successful raiding for the serious raider. Hardcore or casual, Vault of Archavon or Ulduar, everyone can get in on the action and down some bosses.
If you remember, back when Emalon the Storm Watcher hit the ground, our own Zach Yonzon warned you that Emalon was no loot pinata. While Archavon required only a bare minimum of basic skills, and was really just a DPS race even when he first came out, Emalon to this day requires your group to vaguely pay attention and kill the big, growing add first.
With the beginning of the new Arena season, Koralon the FIre Watcher has taken up residence with Emalon and Archavon. He lives to the left of the hall, opposite to where Emalon hangs out. In terms of skill, he's only slightly more difficult than Archavon. In fact, I'd say he's probably easier, if your group's gear can support your ability to kill him. Check out the strategy behind the cut.
We'll go through his four abilities first, because that's what we do.
Koralon the Flame Watcher
- Burning Breath - Inflicts Fire damage to all targets every 1 second for 3 seconds.
- Meteor Fists - Attacks inflict damage split evenly to targets within 10 yards of the primary target.
- Blazing Embers - Inflicts Fire damage every 1 second for as long as the target remains in the flame. Don't stand in the fire and you won't take damage.
- Burning Fury - Increases all damage by 5%. This ability stacks about once every twenty seconds, and is responsible for the "DPS race" aspect of Koralon.
Okay, check this out. I mean it this time. The big secret to Koralon the Flame Watcher is do not stand in fire. That's the short version. Here's the slightly longer version.
You're going to want two tanks, a few healers, and a bunch of DPS. We get by with two or three healers, but you may need more depending on your tanks' gear levels.
When you enter the room to fight Koralon, you may notice it's kind of round, similar to the rooms for Emalon and Archavon. In the center is another circle. You can think of that as your tanks' race track. When your main tank pulls Koralon, tug him to the perimeter of that race track circle. Tank him in place.
Your off-tank needs to be standing immediately next to your main tank. This is because from time to time, Koralon picks up the ability called Meteor Fists. When Meteor Fists happen, he will punch your main tank in the face, and split that damage with anyone else who is standing nearby. Having two tanks stand there mean they split the damage evenly. You could go with a third, but then you're robbing yourself of some DPS.
The next thing to keep in mind is that Koralon will occasionally put patches of fire on the ground. Don't stand in them. Whenever your tanks and melee DPS find they can no longer do their job due to too much fire on the ground, have your tank slowly move backward around that racetrack. You don't have to constantly kite him. Just kind of nudge him back each time someone says "There's nowhere to stand!" If you have trouble actually seeing the fire (which is a fairly valid thing to say), it will appear as a debuff. If you have the debuff, you should move, because that means you're standing in fire.
Koralon will occasionally do some light AE raid damage, which most healers will be able to handle without much trouble. However, this is mostly gear dependent. If you're coming in to Koralon with a bunch of fresh 80s, you might want to have a little extra healing just in case.
Except for those few things, this is a DPS race. Burning Fury will continually stack until Koralon hits the ground. If you're doing it right, and not too many DPS are standing in fire, then that will be before Burning Fury stacks sufficiently to make your tank unhealable.
Summary
So, that's the fight in a nutshell. Try not to stand in fire. Shoot hard, shoot fast. If the tank has too much fire around for anyone to stand there, circle Koralon around the racetrack.
I'm not quite sure why Koralon is so much easier compared to Emalon. I personally think that it's to help supply gear that will get folks caught up and ready for the Icecrown raid. Or, maybe it's an apology for Emalon. I don't know. I like to think that's it's to help get people up to par. It's just a loot lottery that you have to put some work into. It's not like epics are being flung across Northrend, so that's my favorite explanation.
My advice for anyong PUGging this fight, however, would be to fight Koralon first. That way, if your PUG isn't quite up to it, you can still try and find another. While the fight isn't hard, it does require some gear and coordination. And to be fair, if folks aren't used to a don't-stand-in-fire raiding still, this could be somewhat new.
Good luck, and good hunting!

Honestly, the damned see through floor or makes it pretty hard to see fire. Ranged DPS heals etc, i suggest standing on the stone part.
Tom Sep 9th 2009 6:06PM
I think it's a little harder than you say.
In particular Molten Fists does hit quite hard, and the fire patches are very hard to see given the color of the floor.
Stay out of the middle so you can see the fire, and it's well worth chaining Tank and Healer cooldowns for Meteor Fists.

Meteor fists hits for around 40k split between two targets. Any tank with even badge gear at this point should be able to hit 40K buffed. 2 tanks makes this fight a joke for tank healing. Don't stand in fire and don't bring bad dps and he's cake. The only thing that makes meteor fists scary is if you only have one tank, or if you let the buff stacks get too high.

I know there is a trick to this fight....
Something I should do...or not do...
The fire gives a buff, right? So, I should stand in the fire?

Does Meteor fists have a max number of people it can hit? I think in 25 it might be 3 people max sharing the damage, but wouldn't mind some confirmation.
We tried solo-tanking it with all the melee running infront to share the Meteor Fists (making the assumption that 60k split 10 ways was easily managed and would allow more DPS) but it seemed like only me and 2 others got hit.

I don't know if there's a maximum, but it does seem to be able to be split among more than just two. In 25 man, the tanks turn him when he's casting meteor fist to spread the damage among the melee, then turn him back. It's not necessary, but it does save the healers a little work.

Still not as good as Shade of Aran, imo.
I will not move when Flame Wreath is cast or the raid blows up.

in my own defense, the first time i fought Shade i was not informed about staying in the fire until it was too late... at which point i was killed and called varying names that i won't get in to here, lol

Thank-you. Now that's going to be stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

Did this fight the other night for the first time and it was with a PUG. We one shotted this and pretty much everyone hadn't done this fight befor. We just found the dps race the hardest part. Just keep him kited away form the fire and everyone should follow! Pretty easy fight!

Biggest problem I have seen is tanks unwilling to move the boss and melee DPS lossing time because they can't stand in the fire.
Auto Sep 9th 2009 6:29PM
IF your computer can handle it, turning up the detail of spell effects makes seeing the fire easier.

"light AE raid damage"? Have you healed this fight? Burning breath is brutal. That's what ultimately wipes the raid more than meteor fists in my experience.
mysticalos Sep 9th 2009 6:39PM
it is light ae damage, unless he has like 7 stacks of damage increase, in which case the problem is your dps not the attack hitting hard.
ash Sep 9th 2009 7:16PM
The main problem I have seen with the AE (besides his damage buff getting too high) is when new patches of fire also pop up or people run into existing patches while the AE damage happens. Its not a hard fight to heal, he basically announces when he is going to hit hard and mostly you need to prep for that and the AE damage. I would say that there are a few environmental factors that make things hard when you are first learning the fight, but once you know what to do it is easy. One thing a lot of people point out is that it is hard to see the flame patches in the orange glowing center of the room, which is a big portion of the space. Also, when the AE damage happens you've got a lot of boom, pop and sizzle going on and it also make it hard to distinguish flame patches. Ironically putting the spell graphics on high also fills your screen with a big red swath of fire during the AE. If people keep mindful of these things, though it should be an easy fight.

The worst part is when he spawns fire right underneath you the very second he starts doing Burning Breath.
This has happened to me at least twice now, and it seems that due to latency, by the time I've moved out of the fire (something which I'm pretty good at, usually about 1 second at most) I'm still dead!
Also, I was in a group that downed Koro on 25m on the night of release, and goddamn that Burning Breath hit like a ton of bricks. I know there was no blue posts about them nerfing the damage to that attack, but since that first night it doesn't seem to hit as hard. Might just be because I'm expecting it, or the healers I'm running with now understand the fight... meh.
QQinsider Sep 10th 2009 12:11AM
Yeah, that has happened to me too. A single tick of the fire debuff during the aoe is enough to kill instantly. I actually think it's slightly unfair that fires spawn during the aoe, it's very hard to see and move quick enough, and DBM doesn't help because you'll be dead when the warning pops up. I've taken to moving around for the duration of the aoe just in case.

For ranged DPS - burning breath needs to be healed fast, because blazing embers will kill you before you can move out of the flame if you start at 40% due to the previous burning breath.
