Reader Jiang sent us a tip about
his new iPhone application (App Store link). It's a realm status application that will track your realm's up and down times
straight from Blizzard's page so you can check them anytime on your iPhone. And that in itself isn't that amazing -- there are
other apps that will do the same thing,
and even some that will do it for free (Jiang's app is $1.99). But Jiang's app will also deliver Push notifications for you, and that's something I haven't seen before in an iPhone app. You can set notifications for multiple realms, and then whenever one goes up or down, you'll get a notification on your iPhone about it.
A few of the other apps are working on implementing Push notifications, so if you're patient, you might be able to get them for cheaper (or even free, though it usually does cost money to run a notification server). But if you absolutely want up-to-the-minute notifications when servers go up and down and are willing to put a few bucks towards a piece of iPhone software, there you go.

Do people's servers really go down often enough to need to babysit them like this? The funky login problems last night were the first time my home realm (Tanaris) has had problems in several months of otherwise smooth operation.
I dunno, I just think it's an awful lot of fuss and bother for something pretty insignificant really.

It's just convenience, really. There have been weirder things to pay for, ya know.

I’ve had this or a similar app on my ipod for a while now. Also, I thought Blizzard issued a cease or desist for these kinds of apps.

Or u could save the realm page to a bookmark and save 2 bux. Push notifcations are nice but not worth the money. I'm glad guys are doing thier best to make money some way with wow but it's nothing i would buy.

2 bucks for a push-notification of when my server is down?! Count me out.

Firefox + reloadevery addon...refreshes the page as often as I want on Tuesdays when I'm home. I usually set it for every 15 minutes and then once the deadline for maintenance to be done passes I set it for every 5 minutes. It's free. You can't play wow on the iphone, I don't know why you'd need an app to tell you if the servers are up or down on it. :)

Just an FYI, the realm status page updates itself in real time, dont even need to refresh it.

I keep tapping on my server but it won't turn on. What do I do?

i've made a software that do just about what you said, for Windows users (althought it can be compiled on linux and macs too). Favorites, notification, refresh automatically, etc...

give it a try, if you want ! :)

Forgot to mention, it's free, and it's currently only list the US servers. The EU ones are to comes soon enough.

There are several ways of doing this on computers, what makes this app so interesting is that it's on your iPhone/iPod so you don't have to babysit your computer.

Considering that each realm has its own Twitter account that sends out alerts when the servers go down or come up, most of these apps seem pretty useless.

do people forget about how blizzard made all the paid wow apps either go free or be tken down? Maybe wait around a bit till it's free, or till blizzard fills one of those 2 spots in thier own app with a server tracker.

That app will die by the end of next week. Blizzard BAN HAMMA TIME!!!

I use one of the free apps and it works great (warcraftstat). To be honest, anytime my server is down, it never shows as offline according to blizzard anyways, so its really just something to look at in the few minutes before it comes back up :)
Ringo Flinthammer Sep 9th 2009 12:22PM
I picked up warcraftstat a while ago, but ended up dropping it from my iPhone. I cannot imagine a scenario in which I would need to be notified that "omg, the server is up!" Silver Hand is pretty much always up, except on Tuesday mornings, and I work.

Push applications are starting to crop up. SportsTap, for instance, keeps track of sports games, sending push notifications when scores change and games start and finish. It's actually kind of nice. But then again, SportsTap is free.

If I'm away from my computer, I'm not playing WoW, which means I don't need something telling me my server is down when I'm out eating dinner, but that's just me.
For anyone that uses Windows Vista there's actually a cool WoW sidebar app that shows you your sever status and allows you to search any of the popular WoW reference sites.
Like I said if I'm not at my computer, I don't care...so it's the perfect little tool for me.
