Larisa
over at the Pink Pigtail Inn misunderstood the news we posted the other day about
the Darkmoon Faire live event in France being canceled, and instead thought that
the actual ingame event had been shut down for good. And that brought up an interesting question to her: so what if it was? The original Faire was an interesting idea, a way to bring the fun of a regular holiday (along with the usual quests,
special items, and even a reputation to grind) around every month or so. But just like having Christmas every month would get old after a while, the Faire has sort of worn out its welcome -- players really only go there for following some arcane questline, and when they do get there, they're undoubtedly disappointed by how barren the place is.
So what to do? Larisa suggests that the
Cataclysm might just claim the whole thing -- Azeroth gets rocked, and no more Darkmoon Faire. I'd actually like to see the story go the other way: if there's a traveling group of performers with vast magical powers that's allowed to move at will between Horde and Alliance lands, wouldn't it be great if they were actually part of a secret society that had bigger interests rise to the top
in a disaster situation? I'm sure Blizzard has more than enough on their plate for
the next few content patches, but the Faire itself is due for an update, too, and it'd be nice to see it included in the larger storyline somehow.

The Darkmoon Faire has a lot of untapped potential. I hope Blizzard do take advantage of that in Cataclysm and do something interesting with it.

Couldn't agree more. This is an event that really needs to be updated and expanded every expansion, even every patch. I have hundreds of tickets collecting dust in my bank...how I'd love to be able to have some up-to-date item to spend them on. I'd even be encouraged to actively collect them.
Reputation rewards would also be very vice. And remember, there is the still the epicness of the Darkmoon decks, and the free buff provided by the fortune teller (1-10% extra damage? Anyone remember that one?)

Agreed.
I played the game back in vanilla and was amazing and delighted every time the faire visited, even though I never got above level 30.
I decide to play again last december and was kind of annoyed to see that nothing had changed. It had been the exact same fair for four years.

Am I misremembering things, or did they say at Blizzcon '08 that they had big things in store for the Darkmoon Faire during WotLK?
Since we've heard nothing of the sort since then, my speculation is that it would have been some kind of dance troupe that would have taught you exclusive moves.

I have no idea what you even do for Darkmoon Fair. It be awesome, I have no idea. There isn't anything that brings me into the place, even that fella who walks around and says "hey come to the fair".

At level 60, the Darkmoon Faire had some really nice necklaces, better than some of the stuff from the 40-man raids. It took a lot of work to get them. But, short of the new card decks that were added in Burning Crusade, and a little bit of tie-in to the Inscription profession's card decks, the Faire really has been left behind.

I'm rooting for the "swallowed up in cataclysm" idea. I like that idea for a lot of things, though...4th season of Heroes? Kill 'em all.

I find it an awesome place to get a wood frog box that otherwise is hard to find.
heavyice2 Sep 11th 2009 6:12PM
I think it would awesome in Cataclysm if Darkmoon began a long quest that ended with you meeting a magical crab that appeared almost ghostly and awarded the player a pony....just saying...
FOR PONY!

For a while there was a blank Darkmoon Faire tab under world events in the achievement window. Guess it was just a mistake, but it might indicate that they have plans for it. I hope they do something cool with it, I've always loved the Faire. I still go sometimes, though I have nothing to do there, except buying frogs ;)

I always kinda meant to go check it out but could never really be bothered.
Foxfyr Sep 11th 2009 6:15PM
Hopefully it doesn't disappear before I can get Insane.
Syd Sep 11th 2009 8:48PM
I agree. I have just become revered with Darkmoon... 20800 points of rep to go and I'll officially be Insane.
DigitalMonitor Sep 11th 2009 9:11PM
@Foxfyr
If it does disappear it would probably drive you insane.

I would welcome a plot in which the Darkmoon clan is some sort of secret agent of the Titans (read: Darkmoon, Agent Darkmoon); they going around Azeroth (and beyond!) to quietly record the evolution of species and make suggestions on what need to be done. They only observe and almost never take actions. But they do occasionally give away purples to lure adventurers to serve their secret purposes. After all, their trinkets are always the best. If they are not associated with Titans (if not titan themselves!), whom else could they be? I think it could blend into 'Path of Titans' very well.

Never gone near the Faire, don't really understand the first thing about it other than endless spam of trade chat by people looking to trade Nobles cards. Anything they can do to make it more accessible sounds great.
I-man Sep 11th 2009 8:04PM
my thoughts exactly. been playing for years and i've never even visited the faire. something to do with cards, other than that - clueless.
slyman.is.god Sep 11th 2009 6:30PM
i don't think so.. I mean, I go every month to get my darkmoon card trinkets D: It's something I look for every month, I'm a scribe and I really don't think it's worn out or anything, cards are awesome for business and it's always nice to just go there, relax and drink some darkmoon farie special.. so I hope it lasts forever, even if the whole world is torn apart D:!!

Haven't been to the fare since vanilla wow. I would like to see them revamp it but TBH if it was lost in the next expansion i wouldn't miss it all that much!
szilagyi Sep 11th 2009 6:39PM
Easy. The Darkmoon Faire staff are actually what's left of the Guardians of Tirisfal.
