Larisa
over at the Pink Pigtail Inn misunderstood the news we posted the other day about
the Darkmoon Faire live event in France being canceled, and instead thought that
the actual ingame event had been shut down for good. And that brought up an interesting question to her: so what if it was? The original Faire was an interesting idea, a way to bring the fun of a regular holiday (along with the usual quests,
special items, and even a reputation to grind) around every month or so. But just like having Christmas every month would get old after a while, the Faire has sort of worn out its welcome -- players really only go there for following some arcane questline, and when they do get there, they're undoubtedly disappointed by how barren the place is.
So what to do? Larisa suggests that the
Cataclysm might just claim the whole thing -- Azeroth gets rocked, and no more Darkmoon Faire. I'd actually like to see the story go the other way: if there's a traveling group of performers with vast magical powers that's allowed to move at will between Horde and Alliance lands, wouldn't it be great if they were actually part of a secret society that had bigger interests rise to the top
in a disaster situation? I'm sure Blizzard has more than enough on their plate for
the next few content patches, but the Faire itself is due for an update, too, and it'd be nice to see it included in the larger storyline somehow.

It was partially updated in WotLK for Inscription, to give new rewards for the decks it added, but that's it really.
Been a few times, not gotten above Neutral on any character. A lot of work for nothing, really.

I recall during 3.1 that there was a Darkmoon Faire tab in the World Events section of Achievements, but with nothing in it. Maybe Blizz is planning to expand it?

I think the biggest problem with the Darkmoon Faire is that it has grown outdated. There's no reason to grind the reputation beyond getting the Insane in The Membrane achievement. The ticket rewards are all geared towards vanilla WoW. The biggest draw at this point - outside of getting a Jubling for each of your alts or messing the cannon or steam tonks - are the cards. And then, unless you're grinding for rep, you're not going to turn in decks all that often, if at all.
If Blizzard wishes to make the Darkmoon Faire at all relevant to players, they'll need to do more than slap a few more decks of cards into the game each expansion. It doesn't need a complete overhaul. But new rewards and turn-ins geared towards BC and Wrath level characters would be a nice start. Perhaps make the Faire into a daily quest hub for the few days it's open every month. I'm not saying turn it into another generic rep grind faction. But it would be a nice start if the special container reward had more slots in it than a Runecloth Bag.
If nothing else, I'd love to see a way to buy a Darkmoon Faire tabard.

Anyone else think they should have done the Tournament with the Darkmoon Fair instead of the Argent Crusade? It just seems to fit more thematically. And they could have put it in a more low level area for players who just got their mounts at level 20...Somewhere hidden in the Uplands of Alterac would work.

Has someone been reading the new Dune sequel?

I think it should become a daily quest hub. It can be seen moving from one place to another (not all big and set up). It will be in a different zone every few days while moving between cities. Have some quests that go along with the zone now that Azeroth is being updated to 80. You can get the things similar to the Argent Crusade, but only tradeable when the faire is up. Another idea is make the gear from Vanilla up to 80 with the rest of Azeroth.

I don't think Cataclysm is going to obliterate as much content as people think. It's going to be an expansion of enhancements in my opinion.

New class: Carnie!!
I'd roll one.
Hairfish Sep 12th 2009 10:13PM
Yes! :D I'd even play Horde for that one: Goblin Carnie. Perfect.

I think that Cataclysm would be a good time to revamp the Darkmoon Faire. Why? Well, in a time of great trauma and despair, when familiar landscapes are sundered, the world after would need mental and spiritual healing. Perhaps in the form of laughter. Entertainment. Possibly provided by the Darkmoon Faire. It would be a shame to remove the Faire and its silly tonk fighters or cannon during a time when Azeroth's inhabitants needed it most.

I hope to see a mixture of Demachic's Circus version and Snacky's Journal's faire.
