Wikia turns a profit, thanks in part to WoWWiki

So why are we reporting all of this here? You may have already guessed: one of their largest sites, if not the largest, is the World of Warcraft-related wiki, WoWWiki (which we definitely read and use here at WoW.com all the time). WoWWiki is mentioned in a few reports as having 70,000 pages (almost 1/3 more than the next-biggest site in the network, a cooking wiki). In fact, at least one reports credits WoWWiki, along with the Twilight-related wiki, for the growth entirely. We're not sure how much of a part they actually played in the new reported profits, but they are definitely growing, and are a terrific resource for those of us in the WoW community.

Where does the Star Wars wiki fit in? I'm sure it has 70,000 articles for just characters alone. Star Wars Geeks make a lot of pages.

Star Wars Wiki - 70,657 articles
WoW Wiki - 77,619 articles

Yeah, and they’ve been around a lot longer, meaning they probably have a lot of other resources outside the wikia network. For WoW lore nerds, its either WoWwiki or Blizzard’s pitifully outdated main site encyclopedia;
B
Blood Elves
Burning Legion
K
Kaeldoeri
N
Naga
More to come soon…

I would be hopeless without wowwiki. :P
snowleopard233 Sep 11th 2009 9:19AM
I would too. That site doesn’t always have all the really specific info on items and quests, but it will certainly tell you where to look., providing links that go straight to thottbott, wowhead and allkazam. It’s also the place I go to so I win all my forum lore arguments lol.

I find it useful for the Lore, especially Horde lore, to see the "other side of the story" since I find it so tedious to try to role Horde without a main to give me money

Er right, hearts = html :(
What I meant to say, was I ♥ wowwiki :) Great game information and fun for browsing lore too!

I adore WoWWiki, I spend most of my day at work (when I'm not training) reading up on lore or looking up information on my current or next project.
It's at the top of my resource list.

Firefox Ad-Block Plus FTW!
It still blows my mind that people can get paid for clicking on some pixels. It's a good thing I can't see 99.5% of them, or else I'd be rolling in Viagra, illegal Chinese in-game gold and email spam/keyloggers/malware.

Hmm, someone reported a profit based on a site they run but is influenced by Warcraft...Can't wait for Activision-Blizzard to overreact and issue a C&D.

Please tell me we beat the Twilight-wiki

WoWWiki does need a lot of updating, though. Both of information and for mouse-over item pop-ups, whatever that's called. But I consult it a lot.

Its a wiki. Get to work! :P

wowwiki got me interested in playing wow

Hell yeah. WoW Wiki is such a bloody awesome reference. I use it, among other things, for quests, dungeons and lore information (definitely a lot of the latter). My only real problem with it is it's use of mouse-overs... the delay they've set is just absolutely horrible and it's also rather iffy -- you have to be hovered over the text correctly AND wait AGES for the tooltip to even pop up.

Thanks for your comment, I'll take a look at the delay on the tooltips.
