Two Bosses Enter: King Dred vs. King Ymiron

It's Battle Royale among the royals this week, as King Dred of Drak'tharon Keep squares off against King Ymiron of Utgarde Pinnacle. Both contenders enter the Thunderdome on the heels of impressive first-round victories. King Dred crunched the doomed, fanatical Jedoga Shadowseeker in less than two chomps of his great jaws, while King Ymiron practically ushered Drakkari Colossus out of the Thunderdome with a wave of one finger. Will a battle between the King of the Beasts and the King of the Vrykul prove more challenging to both?
Here are the ground rules for this week's royal melee:
- Assume that the opponents along with their minions share similar levels, health pools and comparative overall damage output.
- This deathmatch takes place in King Ymiron's throne room, but this shall not hinder King Dred from being able to summon raptors during battle.
- All the usual minions will be available to each boss.
- Don't get caught up in gameplay mechanics and what actual players might do in each encounter.
- Don't neglect style, story and scale.
King Dred (Drak'tharon Keep)King Dred raises his claws menacingly ...
King Dred, the great Devilsaur, is found within Drak'tharon Keep. His vicious attacks are augmented by those of the smaller raptors he calls to his aid during battle.
- Bellowing Roar
- Fearsome Roar
- Grievous Bite
- Mangling Slash
- Piercing Slash
- Raptor Call
- King Dred also "raises his claws menacingly," after which he performs all three of his bleed effects in rapid succession.
Read more about the Devilsaur's battle tactics, and look over comments from players who've faced him in Drak'tharon Keep.
King Ymiron (Utgarde Pinnacle) You invade my home and then dare to challenge me? I will tear the hearts from your chests and offer them as gifts to the death god! Rualg nja gaborr!
King Ymiron is the slumbering king of Northrend's Vrykul, the leader of the Dragonflayer clan who lies sleeping within Gjalerbron. Fanatically adored by his people, the now undead king has proven his worth to the Lich King.
Like the kingly Vrykul he is, King Ymiron hits like Thor's hammer. Normal hits are hard, and his Dark Slash cuts down 50 percent of the target's health. The king protects himself with Bane and complicates matters with the random cast of Fetid Rot.
Periodically during battle, King Ymiron's Screams of the Dead paralyze opponents for 8 seconds. During this time, he runs to one of the four longboats in the room to channel a spell from a Vrykul ancestor there. He will use that ability until the longboat burns shortly thereafter.
Longboat abilities include:
- Spirit Burst
- Summons an orb that causes AoE shadow damage and moves around the room.
- Spirit Strike
- Summons minions
The smackdown
Two Boss matchups are about substance and style, not game play and mechanics. No player-tactic or game-mechanic nitpicking! Vote for the spirit of the battle as set forth above. Set aside differences in opponents' health pools, game level and actual damage output.
Who wins, and why? We'll see you down below in the comments – can you come up with a convincing scenario that will sway other readers to your point of view?

This has to be a case of dinosaur always wins, unless hit by a asteroid.
scraggerly Sep 17th 2009 2:49PM
How could any one person kill a t-rex... oh yea, Magic!
dark slash - 50%
screams of the dead - stun
dark slash - 25%
gg
Josin Sep 18th 2009 9:24AM
Agreed.
The dinosaur takes this handily. Heck, how do you fit a devilsaur in that room without him smashing Ymiron's boats in the process? With his sources of power destroyed just by the entrance of this thundering lizard, Ymiron quickly uses a hidden ability: Dino Kibble.
With apologies to Lewis Carroll:
"Beware the Devilsaur, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!"
Yes, King Dred is the Jabberwocky, and Ymiron's got no vorpal blade. Wrap it up. This one's over fast.
joshua.stone1989 Sep 17th 2009 2:07PM
Kesh has it right.
Dinosaurs=Pwnage over everything other than asteroids which are super effective.
Dred FTW.

1. Dark Slash
2. Pass go
3. Collect $200
Nagi Sep 17th 2009 2:09PM
It's hard to beat a dinosaur. Especially what is effectively a T.rex or other member of the tyrannosaurid family.
Blasterion Sep 17th 2009 2:09PM
This is a difficult one King on King one of the most deadly and greatest match up so far
Here is how it will go down. King Yirmiron vs King Dred.
King Dred casts Mangling Slash! Bleed Damage is Increased!
King Yimiron casts Fetid Rot! King Dred is diseased!
King Dred inflicts grievous wound! King Yimiron is bleeding profusely!
King Yimron uses Dark Slash! King Dred is heavily Wounded!
Upon the huge hit King Dred calls for help! Raptor Call!
King Yimiron continues to bleed and runs for a long boat!
Spirit Orbs! The Raptors are annilated~!
King Dred uses Piercing Slash! Armor Reduced!
Fight continues for long however because King Yimiron continues to bleed even thru the screams of the dead he eventually falls. Epic Battle indeed

Ok, but you forget, after the Dark Slash you have King Dred calling Raptors.
Before King Ymiron activates his boat he is going to trigger Bane,
and the little raptors, and Kind Dred can't stop attacking him, hes diseased and dying quickly, so he triggers Bane... Spirit Orbs then strip the life from little raptors, They continue passing attacks, but the Bane and Dark Slash have King Dred well dead
selbyit Sep 17th 2009 2:34PM
So your asuming king yimiron is retarded I asume since he's not starting with dark slash?
Blasterion Sep 17th 2009 2:58PM
to answer questions If you dps Yirmiron fast enough he doesn't do bane and for Dark Slash yes I do assume Yimiron to be kinda stupid just a liitle ^.^"

Dred can summon the assistance of raptors, which threaten to mangle all before them with their ineffable fury. King Ymiron... relies on the powers of ancestors. How powerful can they really be--I mean, they're dead.
Besides, raptor battles are one of the few threats which receive their own separate, academic treatment. http://xkcd.com/135/
Bosswally Sep 17th 2009 2:23PM
dinosaurs rule all, everyone vote for king dred
DeathPaladin Sep 17th 2009 2:33PM
On the one hand, Ymiron is a Viking.
On the other hand, Dred is a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
The part of my brain that is still 5 years old has decided this is no contest. If Ymiron is not allowed to use Dred as a mount, then he must die so that Dred may live.
iman.satriaputra Sep 17th 2009 2:42PM
lol i'd say King Ymiron will won, obviously, and.. obviously not by himself, he IS after all, favored by the Lich King.. And besides, what would King Dred feel if King Ymiron summoned all of his followers in both UP and UK? lol Dred would be outnumbered, outmaneuvered, and outfavored (if that's even a word, lol), besides, The Lich King would've never let Ymiron, his 2nd favorite boy (right after Kel'thuzad), lose against King Dred, though he is more powerful. Id say if they were really one-on-one, Ymiron would lose, but.. given the circumstances.. Dred would definitely lose against Ymiron.
Otome Sep 17th 2009 4:57PM
Um.. the circumstances are just the two here with their own abilities, not outside help from random people. Ymiron's followers and Arthas have no bearing on this match-up.
Only the ancestor thing and Dred's raptors can be taken into account.
malaika Sep 17th 2009 2:34PM
Hail to the King, Baby!

As King Dred approaches King Ymiron's throne, Ymiron gets an odd look on his face, complete with a half-smile. Dred roars his defiance and summons a half dozen raptors to his defense, confused as to why Ymiron has yet to raise his weapon.
As Dred approaches with his raptor companions, Ymiron continues his path of inaction. When at last the raptors are about to strike, Ymiron lets out a bone curdling scream. Paralyzed, Dred can only watch in horror as the events unfold.
Ymiron grabs his weapon and holds it high in the sky, "Lich King, hear my plea! Give me the power to tame this beast, that I may ravage your enemies and bring more enslaved souls to your cause!" For a moment it seems as if his please will be ignored. Just as it seems King Dred may free himself from his paralyzed state, Ymiron's eyes began to glow blue as the spirit of the Lich King flows through him.
From Ymiron's body erupts a cold, heartless voice of great power. "It is I, the Lich King. You will submit to my will, King Dred. You will carry King Ymiron into battle, and together, you will wreak havoc." Dred makes a motion to resist but is quickly stopped when Ymiron grabs him and holds his face near his. Blue mists race from Ymiron's eyes and enter King Dred as he inhales. Closing his eyes, Dred roars in fury. But alas, when his eyes open, they too glow blue the with spirit of the Lich King.
From Ymiron's body the voice emerges once more, "You are mine. Go forth and devour my enemies." The blue light fades away and Ymiron smiles at his new pet. Without a word he hops on King Dred's back, and the two ride out of the castle to wage war.

Yum, curdled bones.
Neofox Sep 18th 2009 12:33AM
"Rumble... rumble... rumble... RuMbLe... RUMBLE!"
The sound suddenly stops. King Ymiron looks quickly from left to right in his throne, wondering what on Azeroth could be making such a ruckus in his own base of operations.
"RUMBLERUMBLERUMBLERUMBLE!!!"
Ymiron stands rapidly from his seat, just in time to see King Dred's head come into view over the top of the stairs. In a second, King Dred is in front of Ymiron. Before Ymiron has a chance to process what is happening, King Dred chomps down on Ymiron's top half, severing his body in two. King Ymiron's legs and lower torso fall to the ground, a river of blood slowly flowing past King Dred's feet as the rest of him is devoured whole.
...If you can break the rules and not care about their actual abilities, so can I.
Pollux Sep 18th 2009 2:28AM
This COULD just be the halcyon speaking, but I really liked Neofox's response.
And I don't even like King Dred.
Btw, Ymiron's secret, self-appointed theme song (the one he listens to on his Zune when he's getting warmed up for a nice and fuzzy massacre): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLDitGAUrno
Hustlin'.
