The Queue: Prelude to drunken frivolity edition

I think the title is fairly self-explanatory, n'est-ce pas?
Radioted asks...
With the recent implementation of faction change thinning the walls between Horde and Alliance all the more, has there been any talking bubbling up of implementing cross-faction mail, even if only fore stuff like heirlooms?
Battle.net 2.0 will allow cross-faction chat, but we haven't heard anything concrete concerning cross-faction mail. Wryxian has mentioned that it's something they'd like to do, however. Heirloom items do transfer with your character if you switch them from Horde to Alliance and vice versa, and right now that's the only way to get an heirloom to your cross-faction toons.
Freak Mojo asks...
If my name gets reported as offensive and I change it, will it be removed from my buddy's Friends List?
Nope. As long as someone has you friended, you'll still show up there regardless of what your name is. Actually, adding someone to your friends list is a time-honored means of tracking ninjas who steal an important drop and then change their names in an attempt to avoid repercussions. There's a well-known ninja on my server who's pulled that stunt at least 3 times so far and hasn't figured out how people always know it's him (shhhhhh). The only way to get yourself off someone's friends list is to transfer servers (and even then, people can often figure out who you are by using sites like Mep's achievement tracker) or -- I would assume -- change factions.
Incidentally, name-changing will also change the name that appears on crafted works. One of the guildies who'd made most of our Night's End cloaks for Black Temple changed his name, and we noticed that the name that appeared on mouseover was his new name rather than the old one.
Efrain asks...
When we are able to fly virtually everywhere what purpose will land mounts serve?
I always assumed that things like Talbuk steak existed for just this reason.
Spencer asks...
(Re: Focus Magic) When will (DPS players) start caring less about recount and more about the tank's survivability?
There are two different issues here, so we'll deal with them one by one, although the question of Focus Magic going to a Discipline Priest is one I'm not sure I can really answer. Whether your raid gets more out of Focus Magic going to a Mage or a high-crit healer is one that ultimately depends on your raid composition and the content you're doing. There are certain encounters (e.g. Gormok's Impale on the tanks, and then Faction Champs in heroic ToC) where DPS matters a lot less than survivability. There are also encounters (e.g. Patchwerk or things like Stokin' the Furnace) where DPS matters a lot. Then there's also the issue of whether the Mage casting Focus Magic wants as much +crit uptime for him/herself as possible, or just wants to slap it on whoever will get the most from it (which is not necessarily the same as giving it to the person who needs it the most), and how many Mages are in the raid anyway.
Ideally the Mage is on the lookout for someone who is: a). casting as much as possible, and: b). critting a lot. That's automatically a strike against healers, because healers should only be casting when they absolutely have to, and that plays a role in why Focus Magic will usually do more for the raid going to a DPS. But let's be frank -- if you've got a global cooldown to spare as a healer while doing hard-modes, you're a better man than I am, Gunga Din. That's one of the reasons I'm waffling a bit and saying it's got something to do with the content you're on.
Mathematically speaking, FM going to a Fire Mage, and secondarily to a FFB Mage, Balance Druid, or Destruction Warlock seems to be the best of all possible worlds and will do the most for the raid under most circumstances (while FM going to an Elemental Shaman represents the best +crit uptime for the casting Mage him/herself, because the Ele is guaranteed a Lava Burst crit assuming a normal rotation and thus "wastes" FM on a significant part of their rotation, the raid DPS will usually be higher if FM is cast on another class. My math is also somewhat shaky on exactly how much Destro Warlocks will get from Focus Magic versus a Moonkin. The Destro, assuming an equal level of skill and gear, will be doing more overall DPS, but most Warlock damage spells have lower crit modifiers -- to my knowledge -- than Starfire and Wrath, both of which are also needed for Eclipse).
Where was I? Eh. I tend toward the belief that things like Focus Magic should generally go to DPS because the buff is oriented more towards them, but there are still situations where hideous tank damage that can't be healed through is going to end an encounter regardless of how good your DPS is. Focus Magic going to a Holy Paladin or Discipline Priest on a heroic Gormok isn't going to go to waste, and it's very easy for someone who hasn't played anything other than a DPS class to underestimate how much tanks and healers struggle to get raids through hard-mode content.
The second issue -- player selfishness, not-uncommon DPS obliviousness to anything other than damage meters, and the resentment this can breed -- is well taken, but something I'd rather address in a different article. I see a lot of it as someone playing a Druid dual-specced into tanking and healing, but the sad fact is that meters tend to incentivize selfish play, and we don't really have a way to accurately measure what someone really contributed to a group outside of more experience with said player. As I wrote on an earlier Queue, you can see who did the most damage in a battleground at the end of a match, but there's no way to untangle who killed the player who was killing someone healing the flag carrier, etc.
Fatamorgana asks...
Is there a comprehensive list somewhere of fun quest reward items?
Not that I've seen, but I've been steadily adding to an article on quests and achievements you'd want to get done before Cataclysm hits. I'll keep an eye out for fun quest rewards too, although that would probably wind up being an entirely different article.
Orkchop asks...
Do you have any tips for running WoW on Windows Vista?
I have only have experience with Macs and WoW myself, but I think a few people on staff play WoW with Vista, and I forwarded the question to the team line, and hope to have an answer for you soon. Commenters are also most welcome to make suggestions.

Land mounts will still be used for:
- BG's
- Certain instances
- I could also see them making more sense in the subterranean cities (UC, IF, Exodar), where the annoyance of dealing with walls and ceilings would outweigh the speed benefits.
Charlie Sep 18th 2009 6:57PM
Granted those cities are being redone to accomodate flying mounts (UC has been named, but I assume the others will as well.
And flying into/in Exodar would be really cool, and would cut way down on that annoying run down the ramp.
Babaloo Sep 18th 2009 7:17PM
Has anyone else noticed that with flying mounts in capital cities, you now have an Aerial For the Alliance / Horde? I can't wait to do a sneaky raid from the sky and start pwning some Faction Leaders.
Nathanyel Sep 18th 2009 8:46PM
"redone to accomodate flying mounts" in the case of UC and IF (or any other city except Thunder Bluff, for that matter) probably just means you'll get a scenic view from above, too, and not just seemingly missing roofs as you would get now. Flying mounts inside UC/IF, _if_ allowed at all, will be more of a hassle than a ground mount, as Nizari pointed out.
Gethe Sep 18th 2009 9:45PM
It's the Ruins of Lordaeron, which lays above UC, that is being redone to accommodate flying mounts, not UC .
Namus Sep 19th 2009 5:46AM
My guess is that the cities will be like Dalaran is right now, only allowing to fly in a certain zone, that way they can prevent the air raids and people will have to use their ground mounts as well.

Regarding the FM question, its also considered common courtesy among mages to trade focus magic with each other. If you're the only mage in the raid the choice is left up to the player, I generally pick a healer when this happens.
Tebla Sep 18th 2009 7:47PM
I will always trade FM, if there is another mage. +Crit to both of us is very nice. I will then go down the ladder as described above. If however our holy pally needed it for hard mode, I would have no problem giving it to him.
I didn't read the original question, but I am pretty sure that most mages with FM available to them would place it on whoever the raid needed, if asked. If they are good, know their class and know what is needed by the raid comp, that is.
Zuma Sep 18th 2009 8:47PM
You give me Focus Magic and I'll make sure to send a few Power Infusions your way. Sorted :)
Anyway, you should always want to get on your healer's good side, we are fascists! We will heal our friends first, heal the best dps first, and we can definately hold in a grudge. When staring at health bars and playing whac-a-mole it's very easy to see who keeps standing in fire...
Vanyl Sep 21st 2009 10:26AM
I trade it with other mages too. +3% crit and then another 3% when it procs. My guild has a mage channel where we co-ordinate it in pairs (or threes) based on the number of us in a run. If you're not specced into it, you're out of luck.
In pugs with no other mages (and with my bf holy pally MIA cause he's second on the list :P), I'll probably put it on a lock or pally (it's rare to find boomies or eles in pugs on my server :(). I've given it to a disc priest, but I never get Power Infusion, so it no longer goes that way.

I run WoW on Vista. Just be sure that your comp does not scan when you are playing (Mine is set to do it at like 3 AM every week on Weds, but it always does it 3-5 times a day whenever.) and press CTRL-ALT-DEL to bring up your Comp Lock and check your processes through Task Manager for anything you don't need running. I usually run fine without the latter, but sometimes my iTunes helper or something is on and I can save some CPU by shutting it down. Just be careful with what you shut down.
Also, don't ever run anything else with WoW unless you HAVE to. Alt-tabbing makes my WoW run alot slower, but I need more RAM anyways.
cmichaelcooper Sep 18th 2009 7:17PM
Running in windowed mode also helps a lot in Vista and Windows 7 RC. Also, RAM is super cheap right now so max it out if possible.
Pacotaco90 Sep 18th 2009 7:45PM
I agree with the windowed mode comment, it runs much much smoother in windowed mode and you don't even lose that much real estate.
Navir Sep 19th 2009 12:35AM
I've been playing on vista for a while and i think my PC is starting to do a scan around 2am, and it doesn't lag my connection, it lags my framerate, any idea what scan it is, and if i can change to to like 6 am when i will not be in the middle of leveling my alts?
Banndit Sep 19th 2009 12:46AM
I had to run WoW as an administrator to get it to save my addon setup, ortherwise as soon as I relogged it'd be back to the same mess everytime.
Simone Sep 19th 2009 4:23AM
Just make sure WoW isn't installed in the default folder (C:\Program Files) as Vista gives problems with that sometimes. I install all my games in C:\Games and it works perfectly.
If you install in the default folder, your settings don't get remembered, unless you run WoW as administrator.
QQinsider Sep 19th 2009 9:29AM
^ This tip by Simone is the most important thing you need to know about running WoW on Vista/Windows7.
The Program Files folder is protected in these OS's, programs are not supposed to store settings etc there, and won't be allowed to unless run as administrator. WoW stores everything in it's main folder, including addons, so it causes less problems if you just install it somewhere else in the first place. I recommend doing this with all games actually, especially older ones, just have a C:\Games folder and install them there.
I also recommend 2GB or more of ram for Vista/Win7.
Hubuly Sep 18th 2009 6:31PM
what about shadow priests our main stat pretty much is crit in fact my two favorite classes to be in a raid are boomkins for the 5% crit aura and mages for focus magic
WoWie Zowie Sep 18th 2009 6:32PM
hate me if u want but im on the side of the fence that fears cross faction mail. it destroys lore, unless youre sending a letter bomb.
why am i gonna get potions or whatnot from someone who technically i could meet in a battleground and try my hardest to murder?
maybe if there was a way to implement gobluns as carriers or something... for a finders fee maybe?
Raze Sep 18th 2009 6:54PM
Because standing around together in a city, examining one another's armor and being completely illiterate when it comes to more than two languages is a fantastic way to keep the lore up, right?
Think of it as unauthorized trade, or something. This series is supposed to be all about shades of gray (unless you're a demon, naga, affliated with the Scourge, Twilight's Hammer, Deathwing, the blue dragonflight, etc.) so it don't think it a stretch that a member of the Alliance or Horde could send an item along to someone belonging to the opposite faction that they'd had a pleasant experience with one time or another.
