Stability issues, rolling restarts for tomorrow

Most people are experiencing extreme lag both in instances and out in regular zones. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it all, just constant server-side lag that impairs things like looting, completing quests, using items, buy items, or trading things to other players.
Pretty much every wonderful thing that could have lag to it does; including the lovely 30 second mount cast.
Hopefully the rolling restarts that will be taking place tomorrow morning at 5:00 a.m. PDT / 8:00 a.m. EDT will fix this. Although I'm hopeful that there would be some quick resets tonight to apply a hotfix or whatever else Blizzard needs to do in-order to make the game more playable.
We'll update this post with any additional information if we get it

Stunning. And on patch day? Who'd have thought it possible?

I can't even log in, whenever I try to log in a character it loads fully then gets stuck :[

It was working fine right after the servers came up from the patch, but obviously it's sucking pretty bad now.
Tridus Sep 22nd 2009 9:34PM
One day they will figure out how to make a patch that doesn't break everything at the same time.
Maybe.

I prefer patch days when they extend maintenance a few hours, and everything works ok, to patch days when they finish on time, and everything fails.

You'd think after numerous patch days and other maintenance downtimes Blizz would've gotten it right by now.
"We are aware of the stability issues affecting several realms and instances this evening and are actively working toward addressing these matters as quickly as possible."
In other words, "We have nfi what the problem is and expect rolling restarts all week"

You'd think after numerous patch days and other maintenance downtimes You would have figured out that patching doesn't go smoothly, it being a hugely complex issue.
In other words, "I have nfi what the problem is but expect me to complain about it endlessly"

I just hope that the restarts fix the iron dwarf brewfest daily...

Yeah, i had a problem with it taking a minute or so before it would register that i was clicking the steins to throw them.
Just now i got booted a couple of times, and got a message that the world server was down, but i'm back in. Nothing too terrible, but a bit annoying.

Hidjus bad over on Trollbane. Oddly, inside an instance seems to be the safest place to be.
/sigh
/breaks out whiskey for the patch day drinking game

Its left a lot of people unable to get the number of tokens they were planning to during brewfest. I wonder if Blizz will do something about it. I'm certian a lot of people will complain.
insideandout2006 Sep 23rd 2009 12:11AM
Yes, i agree on brewfest, some of us our only waiting for this last achiev for the ever elusive protodrake, and started out with no tokens, needing every possible one 2 complete the brewfest cloths quest and the beer of the month. if i have to wait another year i think id gouge out my eyes

For those of you who can't login, be glad.
I died doing Crusader dailies in Icecrown. Waited 10 minutes. I finally showed up at the graveyard. I flew back. I am now waiting another 10-15 minutes here after clicking accept to see if I actually rez...
I want to turn in my dailies before the server dies so I don't miss out on them tomorrow... :(

Funny, because I got downrated earlier today by WoW fanboys mad at me for posting that this exact thing would happen.
From a customer service perspective:
If I invite a TV repairman over, and he says it'll take 6 hours to repair my TV, but it really takes him 8, then I'd cut him some slack. Could be he had a problem he couldn't foresee.
But if every week I invite this guy out, and it takes him longer every time than he says it will take, (and when he leaves the TV still doesn't work right) then maybe, just maybe, the TV repair guy doesn't know exactly what he's doing.
That, or I need a new TV. Or both.

What a horrible inaccurate analogy.
zweitblom Sep 23rd 2009 12:46AM
It could also be that several gigabytes of code are a little harder to maintain than a TV set...
Leonora Sep 23rd 2009 1:21AM
Well, maybe your imagination lacks. The tv is a well established piece of equipment, repairing it is something you can expect a lot of experience on.
WoW is an enigma, with 12 million players and it seems 120+ different patches. I am actually surprised they manage so well most of the time, the order of magnitude is so high that no company ever had to manage this before.
If you think you know better, why dont you make a game like this, and then show the world (and Blizzard) how to pull it off? You might learn a thing or two in the process, including to be less fast in the blame game.
Noscy Sep 23rd 2009 2:05AM
One quick question Phillip...
does your TV have any of the following:
• 20,000 computer systems
• 13,250 server blades
• 75,000 CPU cores
• 1.3 petabytes of storage
• 4,600 staffers
• A partridge in a pear tree.
Further to this does it have 7,650 quests, 70,000 spells, 40,000 NPCs, 1.5 million game assets, and 5.5 million lines of code.
If yes I demand a screenie
SamLowry Sep 23rd 2009 6:02AM
Ah yes, the old "why don't you go and make something better argument". How boring and predictable.
Instead of resorting to playground taunts, how about we fall back to the known facts, which are that Blizzard has come under increasing pressure from it's new master to suck money out of wallets while expending as little money as possible, so they are kicking patches out the door that are so untested that they contain surprises even to Blizzard staffers. Plus there's the fact that Blizzard has been hiring staffers en masse from SOE, a company almost universally hated for its pathetically inept and frustratingly unresponsive customer service. Put just those two factors together and you have a recipe for disaster.
