Encrypted Text: Rogue loot guide to patch 3.2.2

Much to everyone's surprise, Blizzard released patch 3.2.2 this week. I've talked extensively about what this patch means for Assassination Rogues via the Deadly Poison and Envenom changes, and how hard the loss of Throwing Specialization and a 30% damage cut will be hitting Fan of Knives. With the recently stealth buffs to Volley that snuck their way into the 3.2.2 patch, I am already wondering where Rogues and Hunters will land in PvE after the dust settles. The FoK nerf will hurt some of our AoE-centric PvP builds and compositions, but I don't feel that these strategies had much going for them in the first place besides an obviously overpowered talent.
Patch 3.2.2 also brings us Onyxia reborn, completely re-tuned for all of her level 80 glory. This means that she's not only been buffed to challenge level 80 raiders, but her gear has been taken up a notch as well. With ilvl 232 rewards from her 10 man version, and ilvl 245 gear from slaying her with 24 friends, there will be many Rogues foraying into her lair. There are also a few new items available from the Brewfest holiday, one of which surprised even me. Read on for the full details.
Bloodfang Hood / Bloodfang Mask:
Here is one of the most ubiquitous icons of the Rogue. A dark, bloody mask that covers our face while allowing us to stalk our prey in the shadows. Any old-timer will certainly remember with fear the first time they saw this mask on a Rogue making their way towards them. The original helm is now but a relic, complete with a variety of resistances and even a spot of Strength. The newly redone helmets are very-well itemized, right down to their Red socket and Armor Penetration set bonus. For those Rogues still attempting to use the Armor Penetration soft/hard caps, this will help propel you towards that goal.
Sparkling Onyxia Tooth Pendant:
In the case that you manage to defeat Onyxia, you'll be able to score this great quest reward necklace. While it doesn't have a socket and wastes a few budget points on Fire Resistance, it's still a great option for those Rogues who aren't hard-pressed to squeeze every bit of Armor Penetration out of their gear. If you are relying on your necklace to supply some of that delicious ArP, you'll have to look elsewhere!
Singed / Tempered Vis'kag the Bloodletter:
A slow (2.6 speed) main hand sword, it sounded so good once I heard about it. However, then I got around to reading the stats. With no stats to support it, all of its secondary benefits lie in one simple proc. While admittedly powerful (and possibly overpowered in PvP), I was surprised to see a lack of any other stats. This will be a great starter weapon for up-and-coming Combat Rogues, but I don't see this getting much use by anyone with weapons from the current tier of content. Depending on its reliability, a Vis'kag proc, combined with Darkmoon Card: Death and Bandit's Insignia could spell quick death for any opponent.
Empowered Deathbringer:
While no 245 versions of the following weapons have been found, their 232 versions are drool-worthy already. Another weapon with just a powerful proc to grace its item description, this axe has one more thing going for it: a 2.70 speed. One of the slowest Rogues weapons in this expansion, its slow speed makes it an ideal candidate for any Rogue with points in Hack and Slash. The slow speed gives it an incredibly high chance to proc poisons, and makes it ideal for Sinister Striking. I can see PvP Subtlety Rogues using this and a Shadowstep build as well. The slow speed will make it work picking up by itself, though it won't trump any of the current weapons from Trial of the Crusader.
Rusted Gutgore Ripper:
I guess I should've titled this post "weapons with procs and nothing else." It's still a very shiny 1.8 speed weapon, great for Rogues trying to flesh out their PvP gear or working on their Mutilate gear after the Envenom and Deadly Poison changes. The proc's stat reduction is also fairly powerful, draining our opponents of 1200 life, 1800 mana, and a decent chunk of attack power. With its non-unique status, I expect to see quite a few Rogues wielding these in Battlegrounds and Arenas very soon.
Black Knight's Rondel:
Speaking of daggers, here's one with some actual stats on it! The Heroic version of the Black Knight encounter in Trial of the Champion (5 man) was recently modified to drop a pretty sweet dagger for us, also a 1.8 speed. For those of you looking to find a main hand Mutilate weapon: your search is over. It's got decent stats all around (no Haste), and should be easily acquirable for any Rogue. Heroic ToC is a great place to pick up some new gear for those Rogues who are behind the curve in terms of equipment, and now Mutilate Rogues have a weapon they can lust after!
Direbrew's Shanker 2.0:
A redo of a redo of the original, the infamous Shanker from the Grim Guzzler has long been known for it's super-slow 2.00 speed and status as the ultimate ganking weapon. While this version is only ilvl 200, it's still plenty potent for those of you who didn't get a chance to taste either of the other versions. There's not much to say here: there's several better daggers available, so unless you're after it for the memories of ganking in Blackrock Mountains, let this one go to a vendor. Coren Direbrew, the current owner, won't mind at all.
Coren's Chromium Coaster:
A perfect replica of the Heroism badge reward from months ago, I can only see a Rogue using this if they recently hit 80 and never bought the Mirror of Truth, or they pick this up for a second trinket. Coren Direbrew drops one of each of the Emblem trinkets, but this is the only one suitable for a Rogue. It's not a bad item if you don't already have one, but I assume that most Rogues will have picked up a Mirror of Truth.
Tankard O' Terror:
While leveling my very first Rogue, nearly 5 years ago, I decided that I wanted to be a Mace Rogue. I enjoyed smashing in people's faces, I really enjoyed the RNG stun that allowed me to pull off quite a few stunts (Mace Stun -> Bandage!), and a guildmate had given me a free Viking Warhammer. For weeks I searched for a suitable offhand, and I checked the AH every day for the rumored Mug O' Hurt. When I finally got one a few weeks later, I was ecstatic.
When I saw the Tankard drop, I nearly shot through the roof. Here is a true swashbuckler's weapon: a huge mug of hurt and beer! This incredibly detailed chalice drops from Coren Direbrew, the seasonal Brewfest boss. I'd suggest stealthing your way down there ASAP to score one for yourself, or try to pick one up on the AH. This is an insanely good weapon to drop in the hands of a newly 80 Rogue, so if you're working on a new Rogue or you've been out of the game for a few months, pick one of these up and you'll be doing respectable in no time!
Conclusion:
Patch 3.2.2 has really deluged us with new weapons, although many of them may not be ideally itemized, they're guaranteed to have you reminiscing of the old days (or wishing you could). I will be picking up all of the Onyxia weapons for nostalgia alone, and a Tankard O' Terror so I can relive the days of yore, when Maces smashed faces. If you're still holding onto Naxxramas-level weapons, find your spec's ideal weapons on this list and go out and get them ASAP. There's no excuse for using an ilvl 200 weapon any more, and don't expect to fight Arthas using one!

re:Vis'kag the Bloodletter
I'd like to play around with this weapon. the overall DPS of this item is slightly lower than Uld25 Hard Mode items. This may prove to be a DPS Upgrade even without the stats.
If not i would love to whompum with this in PVP

I'm pretty sure 245's have been found...I may be wrong but Bad Example @ Drak'Tharon got a 245 empowered deathbringer... again I may be mistaken but I'm pretty sure it was 245.
As for the quality of the items...idk seems like there are a lot, and I mean a lot, of much better weapons in Trial of the Crusdader, and they drop like candy (seriously after like 3 weeks I picked up over 5 245+ weps and can't afford berserker on them all lol)... not to mention the easier (not to get but the easier bosses) 258 weps in heoric 25 man which I've seen pug'ed at least once or twice. Thoughts?

My all-time favorite weapon combo was back at 60. Nothing was cooler than...
Sand Polished Hammer mh
Anubisath Warhammer oh
ooooh the memories

What about the ArP nerf? No thoughts?
Como Sep 23rd 2009 1:48PM
For combat, it was a pretty hard nerf( based on raid performance, check eliteistjerks for exact numbers and results in the next few days). From my observations last night I lost ~100dps on average. Pre nerf I was almost at cap (91%) with grim toll proc'ing, I forget the new rating but, for me at least it seems the dps loss was not insignificant. Mut should be fine as 1) arp was never as good for mut 2) mut buffs should put the two specs pretty close together.
TheD Sep 23rd 2009 1:55PM
Yeah, I didn't quite understand that either. With ArP being nerfed, and soon to be obsolete, why did Blizz even bother to include it.
Como Sep 23rd 2009 2:17PM
Not sure what they are thinking. I will concede that is impossible to make a balance mmo perfect but it seems to me that if a few people off of elities jerks can grab the data from ingame and get stat weights with in a week of a patch release, and even pretty closely model all dps as it scales with your stats; then blizzard should be able to anticipate problems like these before they happen... the fact is blizzard has been rushing content out at a fast pace and to be frank while the quality of new content is great, it has been lowered a bit imo. I would rather wait another month for a patch then having to spend all my tokens and like 800gold on epic gems only to have to redo the entire thing a few weeks later because they made ArPen a best stat instead of a "side" stat.

Wrong on the budget points wasted for ony loot. The resist stats are just free, no points used.
Rhabella Sep 23rd 2009 2:45PM
I have heard this before. Do you know where to find an explanation, blue or otherwise, as to why resists are not associated with the item budgets?
dathis Sep 23rd 2009 2:20PM
There is a 245 version of the deathbringer, I got it last night:
http://www.wowarmory.com/item-info.xml?i=49500
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Dark+Iron&n=dathis
It was a huge upgrade from my razorscale talon
Como Sep 23rd 2009 2:49PM
Like I implied before, I'm pretty sure 25 man ony drops 245's only, and considering the difficulty of the instance(easy, easy, easy, this ain't the ony fight some of us hardcore kids want/remember) I am not sure why it was said none have been found .
Jim Whatshisname Sep 24th 2009 7:45AM
It's not a huge upgrade unfortunately. It seems the proc rates on these weapons are so low that they are actually worse than other weapons with lower dps/ilvl.
Shame.
Jamison Sep 23rd 2009 2:46PM
I got Aledar's Battlestar http://www.wowhead.com/?item=47508 out of HToC, and I'm debating if the Tankard is a worthy upgrade. I'd certainly miss the socket....
I wish slow OH was an option, then I'd just use both....
Fozz Sep 23rd 2009 2:56PM
The Bloodfang Hood is a great upgrade for many of us. Most rankings put it at least on par with the Hood of Lethal Intent and 245 Tier 9 Helm.
If you are not afraid of breaking your t8.5 set bonuses, or can afford to equip this, go in and get it asap.
The two best things about this:
It's Rogue only, so no druids/hunters can take it.
It harkens back to the good old days when blizzard took real pride in the artwork of every item.
Compared to the current helms available, which look like something an emo vampire would wear to prom, or Hannibal Lecter's hat for the ren fair, the appearance of this helm rocks.
I got it last night, and must say I'm thrilled I can save the 75 emblems of triumph and spend them on something else.
Thanks Blizz for giving the old world back to us in style!
Here's to hoping the art work on items in the xpac follows suit.
Como Sep 23rd 2009 3:05PM
"If you are not afraid of breaking your t8.5 set bonuses"
As far as I know the only reason to break your t8.5 bonus is for t9 258 4 pc (maybe the 245 is worth is but it's pretty damn close last time I checked) so unless you have 5/5 you should be banking those pieces until you have the 4pc.
Fozz Sep 23rd 2009 3:49PM
My phrasing about breaking t8.5 bonus for the Ony 245 Helm was a bit sloppy.
4pc t9 245 does beat 4pc t8.5 with the additional aep, if only slightly, you are right.
Additionally, with the theorycrafting about going to ruptureless cycles, the t8.5 4pc falls behind.
Either way, t8.5 4 pc won't last forever, and I am betting the Ony 245 helm will be powerful after ruptures critting are a thing of the past.
Como Sep 23rd 2009 3:54PM
Good point, I am too just waiting to get to that rupture-less cycle. It's like HaT only still good ;)
Lines Sep 23rd 2009 3:16PM
I'm assuming it's because they left them in as a flavor thing, tribute to the funny itemization of the old gear.
Blayne_Tabor Sep 23rd 2009 4:02PM
Alot of content and so so weapons, I was hoping for a more detailed look at the changes in Mute and what peoples thoughts were about it. I know that most of the fights in ToC and ToGC are in favor of combat just due to the bosses you fight and the situation it puts you in. But do you think with the recent changes and buff to mut we will finally see more people stick it out and go mut or will the majority of the rogue community stay combat?
Sence WotLK came out mut on paper has been better dps than combat and HaT better than both. But with Hat gone now due to the 1 sec global and mut being buffed and gaining even more overall dps on combat will most of you change or stay combat just because its what your use to in your play style and the wider selection in weapons.
