WoW Rookie: Bag it

With the excitement his week focused on the all-new, 22-slot Onyxia Hide Backpack, it seems anticlimactic to think that many players are struggling simply to maintain enough space in their bags for quest items and a decent amount of loot. It's easy to throw down big money for big bags when you're max level and rolling in gold from dailies – but new players must walk the line between overspending for convenience's sake and having enough bag space to get the job done.
Let's make one thing perfectly clear: bigger bags are a savvy investment. There's definitely a point of diminishing returns, though, which will be obvious to even the most naive of WoW rookies searching through the Containers section in the Auction House. (Really. You'll know when it's time to stop upgrading. We promise.) Getting wise to what's available and where to find it will help you squeeze out those last few precious bag slots without going broke in the process.
Bags for rookies
In the early, you're most likely to pick up several of the very smallest bags (4- and 6-slotters) as loot from mobs. You can buy small bags from general goods vendors in cities, while small/medium bags of up to 12 slots are available from bag merchants. These bags are generally a good buy up to the 10- or 12-slot range. At that point, player-made bags become competitively priced, and you'll get a better deal buying on the Auction House.
Keep your bag costs down by saving your extra cloth and having your bags made for you. Look through wowhead.com's list of Tailor-made bags (type in "bags" in the search field just above the chart itself) to get a list of mats. (Don't forget to look up how many pieces of cloth are needed to make each bolt of fabric, and factor that into the total cloth required.) If you can't scrounge up the majority of the materials you need on your own, simply buy the finished product. Awkwardly enough, the raw materials to make a bag are almost always more expensive than the finished product.
What bags are within your reach?Tailor-made bags remain quite reasonably priced up through 16-slot Netherweave Bags. Beyond that, added materials jack up prices. If you're on a new player's budget, you're looking for bags that are made from cloth and thread - period. Quest rewards are also good prospects for first-time players.
Here's a shopping list of all the standard bags out there. One thing to keep in mind as you browse: some of these bags are made with materials from classic WoW or The Burning Crusade that are hard to come by today. (Let's face it, there just aren't many players making Bottomless Bags in this day and age.) Again, if you're on a budget, you want a drop, quest reward, or player-made product made strictly from cloth and thread.
Pro tip for players with alts: Most larger bags are BoE - they'll bind to your character once you've equipped them on your character or in your bank. You can't use a Netherweave Bag, for example, and expect to ship it off to another character once you've finally gotten an upgrade. Plan accordingly!
Special bags
If you're a craftsperson, you may find some bag space relief with specialty bags. Specialty bags feature more slots than regular bags of an equivalent level (and are usually cheaper than regular bags of the same size); however, specialty bags will only hold certain types of items associated with that particular type of bag.
Ammo bags
Ammo bags such as quivers and ammo pouches hold only ammunition such as arrows or bullets. Ammo-gobbling Hunters made great use of ammo bags prior to Patch 3.1.0 (April 2009), when ammo stacks were smaller and ammo bags provided a speed bonus for firing. At one time, Blizzard had discussed doing away with consumable ammo entirely, but only change we have in hand as of now is larger ammo stacks (up to 1,000 per stack). With the exception of some Hunters, you probably don't need a special bag devoted to ammo.
Soul bags
Soul Bags hold more Soul Shards than Warlocks would normally be able to carry in level-appropriate bags. Soul shards were changed in Patch 3.1.0 to set a maximum inventory count of 32; that, plus projected additional changes in the soul shard system, leave the future of soul bags in question.
Craft bags
Item-specific crafting bags allow players to carry large numbers of items specific to their craft. There are no profession requirements or restrictions on craft-specific bags - if you have need for a particular type of item, get a bag that holds it!
These bags carry most (but not all) materials associated with a certain profession. For example, an Enchanting bag only holds (you guessed it) Enchanting materials. These include Enchanting dusts, essences, shards and crystals as well as Enchanting rods and formulae – but not hold elemental essences, wands, vials or oils. The restrictions can seem persnickety, so be prepared for a certain number of "Hrrm, darn it!" moments.
There is a limit to the number of some types of craft bags that you may "carry" on your person at any given time. Bags in your bank slots are considered to be "equipped" (and therefore bind to you), not "carried." You can equip as many of these crafting bags in your bank slots as you like, but you're limited to one at a time (per type) carried on your character.
Don't fall for Auction House trickery. If you're in the market for a craft bag, be sure to check a site such as wowhead.com to see whether it's available from a vendor. A few bags (the 12-slot herb bag comes to mind) are in fact available at a reasonable price from NPC vendors - but due to their rarity, they're often resold at ridiculous markups on the AH.Tying up loose ends
If your storage space is still tight, consider creating a banker to help you manage your inventory.
Keep track of who's got what and where with an inventory add-on. Find inventory mods on sites such as WoWInterface.com, Curse.com, WoWUI or WoWAce.com.

Duskwood, the one quest to help the Night Watch out. Reward is a choice of a bag, a quiver or an ammo pouch. I want to say its a 10 slot, but not certain. There's also a quest in Menethil that also gives a bag as well, again around 10 slots. Both are BoP, as is appropriate for quest rewards. Both have been utterly useless for my alts when they're on the quests because they've already got something bigger in bank and on their person.

OMG, i haven't see that much free bag space since....EVER. I've been trying to make do with about 10 empty slots for a while now. The argent daily quest items alone fill half of those. Not much room left for looting. And thats with Glacial bags in all my slots. :(
As a pally I have 4 sets of gear (tank, heals, dps, pvp) a couple bags full of "fun" items like Orb of deception, Iron Boot Flask, etc. a couple bags of cool looking weapons and other gear i've collected over time that I don't want to part with, at least one bag of tabards (i REALLY wish Blizz would make a closet bag for tabards like they did with the key ring for keys - i'm not collecting any more tabards until they do), at least one or two bags full of old currency type items (this one REALLY pisses me off too - Blizz made a currency tab and 90% of my currency doesn't even go in it! it just sits in my bank taking up space. Sure, i could delete them as i'll probably never need most of them, but i earned them dammit! and my probably not needing them is no excuse for them not going to the currency tab like they should. And it doesn't help that practically every zone in BC and WotLK has its own currency type item that's used for some type of local buff or faction rep, or PvP reward. This is bad design imo.)
One of my biggest gripes in all of WoW has been the CONSTANT need to do bag maintenance just to be able to play the game. They've done a lot with keys, mounts and pets, and making things stack higher, but the currency tab is a joke and they could be doing a lot more. I shouldn't have to fly to a mailbox/vendor after every single quest or have to delete a bunch of cool gear i've worked hard for just to be able to keep playing.

No offense but that sounds like your problem rather than Blizzard's. I felt the same way but then I realized, I never even used half that junk I carried around - I just liked the idea of having it handy if I wanted to play with it or show it off. And that's my problem, and I don't really feel like buying or getting someone to make me a bunch of Glacial Bags. Keep that stuff in your bank, invest in some decent bags and you won't have to throw away much - or, take a good hard look at some of that stuff you're saving. I'm a pack rat too so it's hard. Take some screenshots and get rid of some of it...you'll feel better :)
Thundrcrackr Sep 23rd 2009 11:56AM
Uh, trust me. I clean "junk" out of my bags all the time. I wouldn't have taken the time to type all that if i didn't. I've been playing a long time and done almost every quest in the game so I've accumulated a lot, even without keeping "junk". All of my points were valid and have nothing to with being a pack rat. I forgot to mention also that i have at least one bag full of profession items. :P Maybe Blizz could make profession tabs instead of bags, so we could have a place to keep all our fish, meat, cloth, herbs, etc without it taking up a bag slot. Holiday items are another big one. Most holiday achievements have some sort of holiday currency and multi-piece holiday outfits associated with them too. I'm REALLY hurting for bag space during holiday events.
My point is simply that bag space is definitely a problem for anyone who's been playing the game for a long time or cares anything at all about collecting anything (whether it be tabards, gear sets, or whatever) and there is definitely more Blizzard could be doing to fix it.

I totally disagree i've also been playing "a long time" and i don't have a single character i've managed to get to end game, have everything required, multiple sets of gear, whole bag slots replaced with ammo/shards and not manage to leave the city without, at the very least, my entire "backpack" empty(With the four bag slots full).
Which is more than enough for most questing/daily questing. Even then i've recently tidied things up and I manage to have, on my Warlock main, who has a bag full of soul shards, an entire bag full of nothing but hats, one full of "fun stuff" like the furbolg wand, the coin, the fire fest dancing plynth, piccolo, etc, another with fishing gear, tabards and various old tier gear sets to slip into for fun and still have a backpack and half a frostweave pack free to use.
Seriously, management of bags is quite easy, which is not to say i wouldn't take bigger bags if offered but still, people complain too quickly.
I'd reccomend a bank alt for your non soulbound stuff if your having this much of a problem.
P.s/ Profession bags are usually best kept in the bank and swapped in/out with your "fun bag" when crafting rather than lugging around everywhere with you. You could get the argent squire upgrade too or the travellers tundra mammoth. I've managed to grab them both myself and life couldn't be easier.
Thundrcrackr Sep 23rd 2009 4:24PM
Seriously? Do i have to list every item in my bags for you to believe me? The fact that you have a whole bag empty doesnt mean jack except for the fact that i have one more bag's worth of tabards/fun stuff/gear/etc than you do.
I hate the arrogance of people who think that just because they haven't experienced a particular problem that anyone else who has must be a moron who's "doing it rong - L2bagmanage!"
I have a bank alt. i have the squire. i have the tundra mammoth. Yes, i can play the game just fine, but bag management is still a constant pain-in-the-ass necessity that COULD be eased if Blizz wanted to by implementing more space saving things like they have in the past. I don't LITERALLY have to empty after every single quest, i was just making a point. But in the argent tournament area for example, i can only do a few at a time, because its most convenient to grab all the quests at once, so thats like 5 slots lost to quest items right there, plus its brewfest right now so i've got a few slots filled with that stuff that i'm collecting for achievements.
"but still, people complain too quickly."
I totally agree. People like you complaining about someone else's legitimate, on-topic comment is a perfect example.

I wish they would allow the profession bags to hold "related" profession things. If I'm starting on a new server, I just don't find them worth it - for the herb bags, you don't need to hold many herbs at a time (maybe 8 if you're buying on the AH and staying current with your other prof level), but if an herb bag would hold, say, herbs AND inscription inks and pigments, I'd be set. I just don't see the point in getting a 20 slot herb bag when I don't have 20 herbs and I can get a 12 slot bag for a decent price that holds anything. Or I guess more accurately, let the alchemy and inscription bags also hold herbs. Maybe I'm missing something, but I've just never needed them, and as they are now, they don't seem to "fit in" to the current Azerothian economy with cheap Netherweave bags in the last couple years.

when I hit level 40 for the first time, I had something like 1k gold from farming herbs, so when I saw those frostweave bags for 90g each, I bought 'em without hesitation. I've loved 'em ever since. I filled my bank with 'em too, got my incripction and herbalism 32 slot bags and now I'm making them for my alts. I'm not even level 80 yet and I can't imagine life without my nice frostweave bags.. That new Onyxia bag is awesome! glacial bags are too expensive, at least for me who needs to farm for gold since I can't do any level 80 dailies 8(

It's an MMO. You're going to have to organize your bags from time to time. If you hate going through your bags then the fix is easy. Don't loot any vendor items and your problem is solved.
Don't complain about a minor thing you have to do in a game that requires a lot more work at times.
Vahan Sep 23rd 2009 11:00PM
My only wish is that they would make bags be Bind to Account so that way I can recycle them to alts.
Millea Sep 23rd 2009 12:02PM
If you are running out of space then get your own guild and guild bank. Make a throwaway character and create a guild for them. Those 6 tabs go a long way in holding all of my crap.
Plus it is a great way to save gold too. I send money to my guild bank and it isn't available for easy spending.
kabshiel Sep 23rd 2009 12:10PM
A note about soul bags:
You get one for free at level 20 for doing your succubus quest and another at 30 for doing your felhunter quest. It's probably not worth buying one before that unless you really can't stand having soul shards in your regular bags. The free soul bags should last you until 80.

I recently found a new addon, BagTips:
http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/bag-tips.aspx
With this installed, you put your cursor on your bag (carried or bank slot) and you get a little tooltip that shows bag name, size, vendor value, whats in the bag (and how many), and how many open slot you have.
It's a great way to find something without having to open all your bags.
Jeanluc Sep 23rd 2009 12:50PM
My Character Jeanluc on Firetree US has the Bottomless Bag recipe. Just send me the mats and a 10g tip and I'll send you your bag.
Jason Sep 23rd 2009 12:52PM
Bags are not hard to organize... My last slot is for quest items and loot that i am keeping or disenchanting later, as well as leather and cloth for shipment to my AH toon...
The fourth bag is for reagents and hearthstone and spillover from the last bag.
The third bag is for food/water and other buffs like scrolls
the second bag is for potions, health, mana, under-waterbreathing, etc.
and my backpack is for all the crap that I want to vendor
This works for me, I have all five frost weave and I never run out of room... however I am building a healing set of gear, so that will take up most of the fourth bag i think...

Enchanting Bags DO hold elemental essences FYI
catharsis80 Sep 23rd 2009 1:04PM
OK, so browsing through the features of addons that people are listing sounds like you should all be using ArkInventory. It does pretty much everything, and will even categorize your items in your bags how you want them. It will restack items into full stacks when it can at the click of a button as well. It can show stuff among alts. Mousing over an item tells you how many of that item your alts has as well. I have no need to use any other bag addon. This is your all-in-one. You name it, and it can probably do it.

Issues with bag space always amaze me. I mean I'm a pretty big saver too, so I get it, I do...
I have all frostweave bags equipped on my main (I'm a tailor) and all netherweave in the bank and I have AMPLE space. My main bank is packed with cloth, meat, fish and gems and my bags are loaded with holiday junk, crafted items waiting to be sold, elementals, infinite dust, tabards...stuff that I USE (exception being tabards and holiday gear those are collectables). Why are you holding onto a weapon because it's "cool looking"? Are you equipping that weapon ever? Then who is seeing that it's cool aside from you??? What's the point?!
It seems to me that individuals who are constantly running out of space just can't part with a couple of pixels or are too lazy to empty the trash out when they're near a vendor.
Amapele Sep 23rd 2009 1:21PM
I meant to plug Arkinventory too (and I thought I did, but I guess I deleted it??? Blond moment).
Anyways I won't repeat what catharsis80 said but yea, it's awesome.

"It seems to me that individuals who are constantly running out of space just can't part with a couple of pixels or are too lazy to empty the trash out when they're near a vendor."
Or they play a hybrid class and actually use all their specs. This becomes more of in issue in the endgame, admittedly but it's not at all uncommon to have in my druid's bags and make use of in one outing:
Main resto set
Backup items for resto set (trinkets and gear to switch out depending on nature of fight)
Moonkin set
Resto PvP Set
Fishing gear
Consumables for each spec
Cooking items
In the bank there's also the cat and bear sets, items which might need to be switched out into the main sets to maintain certain caps (eg hit cap or soft haste-cap) or set breaking pieces which are upgrades but won't be worth wearing until there are more set-breaking pieces, and so on.
I enjoy the inventory management aspect of the game and the heavy resource-management focus of WoW is one of my favorite things about it, but there are many good reasons to have bags full to almost bursting.
