WoW Patch 3.2.2: Impact on the Battlegrounds

This is great news for leveling players or even twinks who can gain Honor and a bit of gold. The change also moderately offsets the undocumented change to Alterac Valley Battleground experience gain. Zarhym explains it with a little more detail, saying that the bracket changes were responsible for the unexpected shift in experience gain. He also adds that overall, Battlegrounds experience gain should be improved across the board so playing, say, Warsong Gulch will be as rewarding as playing Alterac Valley.
There are other changes, as well, which I'll lift from the Patch 3.2.2 notes:
- Players may now only queue for no more than two Battlegrounds at a time.
- The dialog box for entering a Battleground match has been changed to reflect the following options: "Enter Battle," "Leave Queue," and "Minimize."
- The time a player has to enter a battle when selected has been reduced to 40 seconds when not already in a Battleground and 20 seconds when in a Battleground.
- Players already in a Battleground can now choose "Enter Battle" for a new Battleground under any circumstance (i.e. while dead, in combat, falling, etc.).
- A new Battleground will not launch until the maximum number of players on each side are in the queue (i.e. 40 players per side for Alterac Valley).
- The size of the Focus Frame can now be adjusted via the Interface Options menu.
The 'Minimize' option for the dialog box is merely something to make it easy for clickers, as the same effect could be achieved by pressing the Esc button. These changes merely streamline Battleground play. It's heartening to know that Blizzard is finally paying attention to even the small problems that have been plaguing the Battlegrounds for some time. Players leaving in the midst of a battle is always detrimental to the team effort, and the changes ensure that most players entering a Battleground are stuck there til the end unless they want to get the Deserter debuff. Considering most matches now last no longer than 20-30 minutes, it's usually better to play them through.
The biggest and most important change, however, is how Battlegrounds will no longer launch until the maximum number of players are met on each side. This means that there will no longer be stupid Alterac Valley matches where one faction has a full complement of 40 while the other has a mere handful. Manpower imbalance, at least, should be off the table now.
The bracket change also indirectly addresses an uncommon problem with high level twinks, such as Level 60 characters who have no expansion but tried out the Burning Crusade trial, thus getting Outlands gear. Since these characters can't gain any experience, even if they have xp gains toggled on, they're effectively perpetual twinks wreaking havoc in a leveling bracket. Thanks to the bracket changes in Patch 3.2.2, however, those twinks will now be at the bottom of the bracket barrel. This means that max level players in vanilla WoW as well as Burning Crusade will be forced to level or turn off xp, or else contribute less significantly to the Battleground effort.
The changes in the most recent patch reaffirm Blizzard's commitment to bring Battlegrounds back into focus. There are bound to be fewer imbalanced matches as well as better Battleground participation. These should be encouraging signs and a preview into the community's readiness for rated Battleground play slated for the Cataclysm.
DoTs! More DoTs! Fifty DKP minus!Onyxia returns! The Brood Mother has been revitalized as a 10 and 25 person raid, so you'll need to be sure you know everything that's coming at you. WoW.com's Guide to Patch 3.2.2 will make sure you're set for Nefarian's nasty daughter as well as other cool changes.

Man, I play way too many video games. When I first saw the picture all i could think of was FALCON PAUNCH!!!

I was thinking of E. Honda's slappy slap.

"This means players must choose their Battlegrounds well to ensure the shortest queue times rather than queuing for four and waiting for the first available one to pop up."
Hmmm the most BGs I've ever been able to queue for at one time has been 3 :/

Warsong Gulch will NEVER be as rewarding to play, as Alterac Valley.
Well, unless they were able to quadruple the XP gain in WG.... then, it is a maybe. :-)

Are you kidding? Unless they promised a free level up and a pony for every flag capture in Warsong, its still going to be the same turtle-f*** it is now and always has been (at least as long as I have played them).
Tusker Sep 24th 2009 6:19PM
Sure it will. Warsong is more fun than Alterac Valley, and individual actions matter. I've never felt that anything I did in AV made a difference. I'm just a zergling even if I'm guarding a tower.
But in WSG I know that I've won, and lost, battles for the entire team through my own actions. That sort of tense fun is its own reward.
Mopo Sep 24th 2009 6:49PM
Warsong can be fun, but I think it needs an overhaul. I am envisioning there should only be one flag like EotS and each side fights to get it to their base. So, everyone is basically fighting for the flag (which everyone seems to fight in the middle anyways) and there will never be a turtle. Now, that would be fun!
Only issue that I can think of is someone getting to the flag way before anyone else, but they can make it so it takes time to pickup or whomever is carrying it has their speed reduced by half or something.

@Mopo> well, maybe it could be "carry the flag into the enemy base". That way it wouldn't matter who gets to it first, since he wouldn't be bringing it away from the enemy, but towards the enemy.
There could be two different resource spawns in the midfield. One would be materials, and you'd have to haul it to your base in order to spawn a flag. From time to time, a flag would spawn, which you'd have to carry to the enemy base in order to score.

"I've never felt that anything I did in AV made a difference. I'm just a zergling even if I'm guarding a tower."
I frequently get to RH and cap the GY and one or both towers while the rest of the group is screwing around with Galv and IBGY. That precious extra minute or two saved often makes all the difference downing Drek in the nick of time.

I kind of dislike the fact that both sides must now have a full queue. I tried getting into Isle of Conquest the other night and 2 hours later found myself realizing, "Oh yeah! I'm in a BG Queue!" I never ended up doing a battleground that night.
I know it's discouraging to be on the side with too few men, but if this is the only solution for that, perhaps they should combine some more battlegroups so that we don't have to wait forever.
devilsei Sep 24th 2009 6:15PM
Sssh, if you aren't careful, they'll start making us join a queue for a queue! It'll be like Wintergrasp all over again man!
Firestride Sep 24th 2009 6:17PM
You obviously play for whichever side has the population advantage on your battlegroup (usually, but not always, Alliance). I'm a Hordie in the Nightfall group, and we would regularly start Strand (on defense every time, of course) with half the people on the other side. With cannons and such, that BG was actually winnable, but EotS was just a big waste of time. There would be matches where the five of us wouldn't come down off our rock, because why should we go down there and get slaughtered?
impurezero Sep 24th 2009 6:27PM
Firestride,
It varies. I've had EotS and WSG matches where we had only 3 people, and I've had AV matches where we were 40 against 10. It's changed each time I hit a new bracket, too.
Based on what you're saying, it sounds like there are battlegroups that have bigger problems with the ratios, but waiting two hours for one fair attempt doesn't seem like much of a solution.
Another thought: Blizzard's stance on World PvP in this game has always been, "If you're getting your ass kicked...better call some friends." They don't care if someone's ganking you over and over again. So, why change the philosophy for Battlegrounds? Especially in a way that ends up causing some people to go an entire night without even getting to PvP.

This is what I've been experiencing in WSG and AB queues since the patch. I am waiting longer for a game to pop. Around 25 min on average for me. I'd like to hear what others have noticed about queue times.
Experience has gone up though and the bonus from heirloom items is nice to have.
antieuclid Sep 24th 2009 7:50PM
I've been waiting in the IoC queue for three days. Breaks for sleeping, but other than that I've left WoW running while I did some studying at my desk for three days straight. I even checked with the other people in my battlegroup on the forums. There has not been an IoC battle in the 71-79 bracket since the patch.
theRaptor Sep 25th 2009 4:15AM
Kiss AV good bye for non-80 brackets during anything but prime time. It will be like going back to before xrealm BG's, queue all day and not see anything launch.
Bob Sep 25th 2009 10:06AM
I agree that they should do something about the ridiculous queue times for some of the lower brackets, but I have to agree with Firestride, as a hordie on Nightfall. I have virtually no EoTS wins or WSG wins because at 80 no one seems to queue horde side in our battlegroup so we start with a half full team against a full alliance team every damn time. Once in a while I could take it, but it was EVERY time. Maybe some cross-battlegroup BGs for the lower brackets would solve the problems that were created by this fix, but believe me I prefer to wait for my BGs than to get overpowered by sheer numbers every time I queue something that's not AV.
Antiquity Sep 25th 2009 10:31AM
Because most people are not playing in the lower brackets without the 80s because its faster to quest and level vs staying in a BG that will take a long time.
Rakah Sep 25th 2009 7:37PM
you think that's bad. i once had an AV where it was me and a bottom of the bracket mage vs 39 alliance >_>
Jonner4now Sep 24th 2009 6:16PM
70-79 AV today = 45 min..
