The Guild releases episode 5 of season 3, retail DVD in stores now

Episode 5 of The Guild's third season is out now, and it's a good one -- with Tink out of the picture, the guildies are seeking a new member, and the applications they've got are.. a little unnerving (I do believe they are the folks who submitted video for that contest a while back, and there's even a pigtailed Kim aka @randysmolly from AIE and the new Ladies of Leet podcast in there with a cameo). In the end, it comes down to two familiar faces, and Codex puts herself in another situation with her newfound guild leadership skills. The new ep is available right now on MSN, and should be on Xbox Live as well. We've also put an embedded version right after the break if you'd rather see it there.
In other Guild news, they've also announced a brand new retail DVD that's apparently in stores today -- it's the same DVDs from the first two seasons that you could buy from them before, though it's dressed up in a brand new box, with space for both discs. They're also having a contest -- if you post a picture of yourself actually buying the DVD today (9/29) to their Facebook page or to Twitter with a #myguilddvd hashtag, they'll send you another copy, this time autographed. And even if you don't have the time or money to pick it up today, you can also add it in to your Netflix queue, which will spread the word over there. Good stuff. Stay tuned every Tuesday for another new Guild episode -- this latest season is getting hot and heavy (and painful for Zaboo, apparently) very quickly here!
Like The Guild? We do, too! We chatted with all of the folks at BlizzCon, including Felicia Day, Sandeep Parikh, and Jeff Lewis and Michele Boyd. We also saw their panel, and the guys were nice enough to stop by our meetup as well. Stay tuned here every Tuesday for a brand new episode of season 3!

The first few episodes of this season (and the last, tbh) had me on shaky ground with this series, but it seems like theyre pulling it back.

Decent show, although I found S1 alot funnier. Just my humble opinion though. Still enjoy the show, I watch it on Xbox LIVE in HD.

Am i the only one who thinks that The Guild is overrated?
rexicon1 Sep 30th 2009 4:43AM
Does anyone else find the Guild to be horribly depressing and not entirely entertaining as it is mesmerizing? I'll admit i've watched the three 'seasons' of content, but I don't really see how anyone could watch the show and
a) admit that it has any jokes or scenes that are well produced or thought out
b) believe that it spouts anything other than what seems like misinformed or generic 'gamer-speak' material
c) doesn't think it's incredibly morbid and bleak
Clara's character is unforgivably unsettling in so many ways and Vork is equally dismal in his own way. Perhaps what really gets me is that these awful and disturbing caricatures aren't presented in a manner that befits their distressing lives. They are presented quite joyfully and almost positively. It's like whoever writes this garbage believes that there is nothing inherently wrong with leading your life this way. I'll admit that gaming is fun and I do it quite regularly, especially in MMO's but I can't allow myself to believe that gaming causes you to be entirely socially inept or insufficient in all other things.
It's incredibly frustrating, the fact that the characters are entirely unlikable for any reason other than 'oh I am a gamer, they are gamers, neat-o, I must empathize with them'. There is nothing about any character that I find is believable or realistic. The way that Zaboo (uggh) or Bladez (uggh) talk to each other by their avatar name using ridiculous terms like 'leveling up' or 'questing' to relate to normal life interactions is infuriating. If you actually say to your friends that you can't wait to 'go on a quest' to meet a girl and then 'level up your charisma and intelligence' so that you can 'gain experience points' then you should probably stop playing any video games immediately and talk to non-gamer people. This kind of vernacular simply isn't used by most gamers outside of the game. You only use these terms within the space of the game and nothing about the game itself translates in most gamers minds.
When the Guild tries to implant these motifs and general knowledge about games into the world it just seems forced, amateurish and generally disheartening. I would much rather that something like this be made with an actual understanding about the social inadequacies of people who game rather than constant bludgeoning of game-related innuendo or side jokes. It would be far funnier.
Beyond my negative criticism of the series, I do kind of enjoy the path they are taking with the Axis of Anarchy. It's a much more honest take on people who do raid hardcore, but they still come off as entirely unlikable and cruel rather than elitist or insufferable like many real hardcore guilds act.
In short, this show is really not that great, but I'd really like it if the creators/writers/whoever take a step back and look at what real gamers are like and actually elaborate on the true bizarre and quirky nature of these kinds of people. There really is a lot of funny material to pull from, they just need to find out exactly what that is rather than piss-spout any sort of nescient jargon in hopes to cultivate empathy with your viewers.
