Blizzard releases details on Icecrown Citadel

It seems that Horde and Alliance each get their own juicy lore goodness in addition to loots, as players will be able to accompany Sylvanas Windrunner or Jaina Proudmoore as they seek a path into the heart of Icecrown Citadel for their individual reasons. (It's safe to say Sylvanas is probably looking to shoot Arthas a lot.) Once inside the Frozen Halls, players must confront the bosses of the Forge of Souls and the Pit of Saron before finally confronting Arthas himself. Sounds pretty bloody epic to me.
The text indicates that each section will have its own unique means of challenging the players before confronting the bosses. With names like Bronjahm the Godfather of Souls (is that a James Brown reference) and Scourgelord Tyrannus, I think it's safe to assume we're not going to be offered tea and crumpets, unless of course they're evil tea and necromantic crumpets.
So there you have it. Go forth and feast your eyes on screenshots of this 'massive, sprawling 5 player dungeon' if I may paraphrase.
Since we know many of you can't access WoW's official website at work, the complete details from Blizzard are reproduced after the break.
From the official page:
Icecrown Citadel will feature a massive five-player dungeon sprawling across three wings of the citadel's foundation. While the Lich King's attention is focused on the Argent Crusade and the Knights of the Ebon Blade ripping through the front gates, players will be tested as they assist Jaina Proudmoore (Alliance) and Sylvanas Windrunner (Horde) in infiltrating the citadel through an alternate entrance.
An epic quest line will present adventurers with the task of weakening Icecrown Citadel's forces, requiring that players defeat the challenges in each dungeon wing before venturing into the next one. Normal and Heroic versions of the dungeon will be accessible to players, although each wing will be considered a separate instance; therefore, on Heroic difficulty, each wing will have its own separate lockout timer. All-new rewards -- including item level 219 (normal) and level 232 (Heroic) loot -- will be offered to those who destroy some of the Lich King's most formidable allies.
The Forge of Souls
Serving as the first wing in this expansive dungeon, the Forge of Souls will quickly put players to the test of carving through the Scourge stronghold into deeper, more treacherous locations. Jaina will command Alliance forces, and Sylvanas will direct Horde forces. The goal is to ruin the twisted engines known as soul grinders found in this portion of the citadel, and then players can advance -- that is, if the Horde and Alliance forces can overcome the foes who confront them.
Bosses
- Bronjahm, the Godfather of Souls: An instrument of reckoning, Bronjahm watches over the engines in the Forge of Souls. He must be killed if the soul grinders are to be destroyed.
- The Devourer of Souls: As the chief operator of the engines found in this wing, the Devourer stands guard over the souls stolen by the Lich King.
Accessible only to those who have laid waste to the Forge of Souls' unholy operations, the Pit of Saron will bring Horde and Alliance forces deeper into the Lich King's domain. Players who venture here will immediately be confronted by the lord of this lair, Scourgelord Tyrannus. But defeating him will not be as easy as it seems. Before they can present a threat to Tyrannus, the adventurers, instructed by their leaders, will need to free enslaved allies who have been trapped by the Scourge. Until that happens, Tyrannus will leave all adversaries to his minions, workers of the citadel's mines. Perhaps the challenges here will lend clues as to the whereabouts of the Lich King's private chambers outside of the Frozen Throne, deep within the Halls of Reflection.
Bosses
- Forgemaster Garfrost: A master of Scourge weaponry, the forgemaster hauls stocks of saronite ore and other precious materials to the cold forges where the mechanisms of death are born. With a host of rime weapons and exotic alloys at his disposal, it could get cold in here.
- Krick and Ick: Zombies serve as mindless muscle in the Pit of Saron's mines, stockpiling metals for Forgemaster Garfrost, and Krick -- a devious leper gnome -- supervises the operations from atop Ick, Krick's ghastly means of transportation.
- Scourgelord Tyrannus: Tyrannus is a terrible force who will no doubt demonstrate his powers to those brave enough to enter the Pit of Saron. The scourgelord must die if players hope to make their way into the third and final wing of this dungeon.
With Jaina and Sylvanas leading the way, adventurers who make it as far as these frigid halls will quickly recognize the weapon that lies ahead: Frostmourne, the corruptive, legendary device of the Lich King himself. The Lich King's private chambers are within reach, although they may be the death of anyone who ventures there.
Bosses
- Falric and Marwyn: Captains for Arthas Menethil in life, Scourge commanders for the Lich King in death, Falric and Marwyn will be summoned to the Halls of Reflection for one purpose: destroying all intruders.
- The Lich King: Sylvanas, thirsty for vengeance against the corrupted prince who sentenced her to an existence as an undead monstrosity, and Jaina, eager to find a flicker of Arthas's soul locked somewhere within the Lich King, have brought their hand-picked allies to this final confrontation. Arthas's true power may only now be discovered. Is there any hope in this mission, or does only death await?

Wow... This looks to be the best 5 man in years.
Holgar Sep 30th 2009 1:54PM
I get to fight Arthas along side Jaina Proudmoore in a five man? Mind blowingly epic!
Agerath Sep 30th 2009 2:00PM
Christ, I hope people don't get to kill Arthas in a 5 man.
That would be a new low for the guys at Blizz. :-(
impurezero Sep 30th 2009 2:10PM
Assuming that we are able to "beat" him, that doesn't neccesarily mean "killing" him. Since this 5-man appears to be very story based, I'm sure there's a twist involved in this fight. I, for one, forsee Daniel Whitcomb getting his wish, though:

It sounds great... and I don't care if we get to kill Arthas in a 5p dungeon!
Dazaras Sep 30th 2009 2:30PM
It figures it would be Jaina (or Sylvannas).
Faction leaders? "Kill Arthas, oh wait, we can't let get away with breathing our rightful air!!! Attack!!!"
Argent Dawn? "Lets fight our way through legions of the undead, to the very foot of Arthas's fortress just to set up a tournament and kill each other over who gets to attack him."
Kirin Tor? "We used up all our magic bringing our entire city to Northrend, we don't have any left to bring it the remaining 100ft to Icecrown."
Wyrmrest Accord? "Who the hell is Arthas?"
Brilliant, guys, really. If faction defection was possible, I'd be on Jaina's side in a heartbeat.

I agree this is going to be awesome. Especially for those who may not be able to do the new icecrown raid we still get a piece of Arthas. I can't wait I am excited!
dustinsbryant Sep 30th 2009 3:11PM
Blizz- Guess what Ice Crown will require two full raid groups to complete. (not a real quote.)
Would this^ make you guys happy? Seriously, it doesn't matter how many peps it takes to bring him down. What matters is how it's done. It could end with the LK's god knows how many souls Arthas has stored away finish him off, including Arthas's own soul and his father. Maybe Darion comes at him with Frostmourne along side Tirion (they need to be involved some how).
Deadly. Off. Topic. Sep 30th 2009 3:46PM
Too bad they can't let you pick, I hate Jaina... Sylvannis isn't much better, but at least she's focused.
Josh Brown Oct 6th 2009 11:13AM
In response to Dazaras
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic about that.. Sooooo here ya go.
Of course it would be Jaina and Sylvanas both have reasons for getting back at Arthas
Jaina because he broke her heart and Sylvanas because Arthas turned her into a banshee and enslaved her.
Argent Tournament. Uh, I'm not sure who you've actually KILLED at the argent tournament other than the Black Knight and the people in the 10/25 version ToC ya know.. The BAD guys...
But you know.. It's kind've a training session. A 'work-out' so to speak.
Kirin Tor. They moved to dalaran to aid in helping to defeat the lich king. I mean ya know Arthas did summon Archimonde to destroy dalaran, and plus who wants to go to the alterac mountains for dalaran. And why the hell would it be logical for dalaran to be in Icecrown? Thats like saying "Hey harlem has alot of crime, lets move the white house there." wwtttfff? So lets go set up shop on Arthas's doorstep.
Wyrmrest Accord. /facepalm Alexstrasza leader of all the dragonflights (and who the hell doesn't want DRAGONS on their side) is gonna help as well fight the lich king.
And if faction defection were the case and you took Jainas side (which happens to be the alliance). She would probably piss her pants at the fact that you have no idea wtf you're talking about.
GG.

Can't WAIT!!!

3 words:
Falric and Marwyn
Thanks you Blizzard - The whole instance sounded awesome enough as it is... then I read this... can't wait for the patch to hit!
Plastic Rat Sep 30th 2009 10:46PM
Ok, I'm about halfway through Warcraft 3 and haven't gotten to the expansion yet. I'm guessing I need to hurry up and finish it before playing this?
Do Falric and Marwyn feature in Warcraft 3? Otherwise why are they significant?
Opala Oct 1st 2009 4:40AM
I'm actually kind of dissapointed that they're 5 man bosses. I really wanted an epic raid encounted against them, this is kind of like when we first saw anub'arak as the boss of azjol, or when kael was 5 man instead of a second raid, cool that they're in, but wish it was more. Though i suppose this is the lich king, could be both :)

Bitchin'.
jealouspirate Sep 30th 2009 1:29PM
Awesome.
Seriously.
olzer Sep 30th 2009 1:30PM
So, as its a 5 man, we're going to fight arthas and then he'll run away deeper into the Citadel to be a raid boss?
themightysven Sep 30th 2009 2:49PM
the Halls of Reflection were merely a setback
Nazgûl Sep 30th 2009 3:39PM
Never said he'd run away. Perhaps he utterly destroys your group, and then after you recover you fight him in Icecrown.
Chevela Sep 30th 2009 6:05PM
/agree with Nazgûl. I forsee you fighting with him (i.e. him toying with you) but just as you get him "low" he insta pwns the whole group, laughs, and retires to his throne. Argent Crusade people sneak in, rez you, hand you some loot, and tell ya to get your act together.. and bring more friends.
