being nice to a new player is one of the best parts of the game, imo.
i can think of two times i helped out a low-level. the first time was in stranglethorn, i saw a lvl20 NE hunter getting attacked. he died before i could one-shot the mob, but whispered me and asked if there was an alliance town nearby.
i told him where booty bay was (he was smack-dab in the middle of STV at the time). he said thanks, and asked if there were quests. i said not at your level, and told him redridge and duskwood were better zones for his level that were close. by then he had rezed. i inspected his gear and figured that he was definitely not an alt... still had lvl8 green reward items on him.
i told him i'd lead him to booty bay to get the flight path, but that he'd need to catch a flight back up to a lower-level zone. he was very polite and thankful for the assistance and asked if he could ask me questions later.
long story short, i ran into him from time to time and answered questions/offered advice. eventually he joined the guild i'm in.
another instance was playing my shammy in blood isle, finishing up old quests for rep. i noticed a lvl12 standing around, looking lost. i checked their gear -- for the most part, they still had their original lvl1 gear on, with a few scattered quest rewards (few of which were good shammy gear), and a few empty slots. clearly, a new player. so i flew down to exodar, grabbed some appropriate gear from the AH, flew back to the watch and gave him the new gear. needless to say, they were very appreciative. i helped them with a couple quests, and then went on my way.
of course, there's numerous other times where it's fun to help out, such as coming to the rescue of someone being attacked by multiple mobs.
there are enough ninjas and rude players in the game... it's so much more fun to find people who prefer to help others, and are appreciative of receiving help.

I had something like that happen once: some poor level 18 warrior was trying to cross the Arathi Highlands for whatever reason. Some level 50 mage had swooped in to protect him and escort him halfway across, then she summoned me to help him get the rest of the way. I took him all the way to Southshore (why she didn't drop him at Refuge Point, I didn't ask).
