Encrypted Text: Macro guide for rogues

Over the past couple of weeks, I've had the opportunity to play my rogue quite a bit more than I am typically able to. Brewfest and Onyxia have had me busy every night, helping my guild mates slay Coren Direbrew over and over again. I was able to pick up a Direbrew's Shanker 2.0, although it won't see much use, it's still nice to see one in my bank beside the previous versions.
I captured this bit of a World of Logs parse from one of the Onyxia attempts, where I was able to my AoE combination macro: it's a very deadly combination. Looking at numbers like these make me wonder if perhaps the great FoK nerf of 3.2.2 wasn't as heavy-handed as it was made up to be. With a Vanish fix on the horizon for patch 3.3 (who's PTR is coming "soon") and the red-hot topic of 'weapon swapping', I decided to do a bit of housecleaning and tidy up my macros and addons in anticipation.
I've tried about ten different Vanish macros, hoping each would give me a more reliable escape than the last. Unfortunately, I was never able to get one that worked 100% of the time. During the process I learned a lot about macro making, and I'd like to share some of my favorite macros. For those of you who are short on bar space or key bindings, you can utilize a macro to save yourself space.
Vanish:
/stopattack
/cleartarget
/cast Vanish
This is the Vanish macro that I'm currently using, and I get much better results (especially in PvP) when using this macro rather than using Vanish by itself. It stops all my auto-attacks while also ensuring that I have no possible target in order to prevent me from bringing myself out of Stealth. I'm hoping that the fix Blizzard is planning truly resolves the issue of Vanish failures once and for all. I'm willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to get it working properly.
Auto-attack automatically:
/startattack
/cast Mutilate or Sinister Strike or Hemorrhage or Fan of Knives
I build the '/startattack' command into any one of my offensive spammable moves, particularly combo point generators. It automatically starts your auto-attacks, making sure you're not missing any damage. When I'm rapidly switching targets, I'll always be attacking whatever my target is. This is particularly useful for Fan of Knives, as often we forget about our single target DPS while trying to AoE. I heard reports that this macro had been broken right after 3.2.2 and that it was using Rank 1 of many abilities, but I was unable to reproduce this effect.
Tricks of the Trade:
/cast [help] [target=focus, help] Tricks of the Trade
Or
/cast [help] [target=targettarget, help] Tricks of the Trade
These are the two most common macros I use to keep Tricks of the Trade active. If I need to redirect new mobs (such as spawning adds) to the right person, I set them as my focus and use the first macro. If I am just trying to give the current tank a threat boost, I'll use the second. The second macro works no matter who is tanking the mob you have targeted, which means you don't have to worry about getting it on the right person. It's perfect for using right before you pop your cooldowns. If you do want it to go to someone special, you can always use a 'regular' copy of Tricks of the Trade to assign it to a particular person. If you're trading tricks with another rogue, you can also use [target=PLAYERNAME] to give them TotT directly.
AoE domination:
/equipslot 17 [Slow OH weapon name] (like /equipslot 18 Razorscale Talon)
/castsequence Blade Flurry, Adrenaline Rush
As I mentioned in my Fan of Knives article, Blade Flurry and Fan of Knives share a very powerful synergy. Blade Flurry will actually add more than 50% damage to your Fan of Knives, bringing it up to its pre-3.2.2 damage levels. Put on a slow offhand weapon to maximize poison procs, and start spamming Fan of Knives once both Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush are active. You'll be able to completely destroy any AoE group, doing DPS that will still have the mages and warlocks wondering why rogues are still the true AoE kings.
Weapon swap:
/equipslot 17 [DP Dagger]
/equipslot [modifier:shift] 17 [IP Dagger]
I picked up this macro from a post by Sotea on Elitist Jerks. It's an easy way to set up a weapon swap macro, allowing you to quickly switch between offhand weapons. A new tactic for Mutilate PvE involves using Deadly Poison on your offhand as usual, but once you have built up a 5-stack of Deadly Poison, you swap to a different OH weapon with Instant Poison on it. You then get the added damage from Instant Poison, and you quickly swap back to Deadly Poison to refresh your 5-stack before it expires. This is only possible after the recent change that allows Deadly Poison stacks to remain on your target after an Envenom.
In order for this to be effective, you need to make sure you maintain your 5-stack of Deadly Poison as efficiently as possible. You also need to have low latency and quick reaction times, as it gives you an additional timer to watch closely. If you're able to ride the line and swap back and forth between weapons and poisons properly, it can offer a pretty serious DPS boost from the bonus Instant Poison procs.
Kill shot:
/cast Cold Blood
/cast Eviscerate
/use Gnomish Lightning Generator / Hand-Mounted Pyro Rocket
I use this macro to finish off any target I'm able to get to half health. It guarantees an Eviscerate crit, while also adding on extra damage from the Engineering perks. Macro'ing Cold Blood to one of your abilities makes it far easier to use effectively, as having to push two buttons in order to first activate Cold Blood and then to use your finisher takes up too much time and effort in a fast-paced situation. It also saves me a crucial key binding.
Conclusion:
If you have any other favorite macros to share, please post them in the comments. There's a lot of different ways to accomplish some very cool things using macros, and I will be covering some more PvP-centric tips, macros, and addons in next week's Encrypted Text!

#show deadly throw
/cast deadly throw
/cast throw
Basically a macro that consolidates throw and deadly throw into the same hotkey. So if you're just tagging mobs to aoe down in solo, it throws a knife, or if you have CP's on a target, and you want to hit them with deadly throw, it'll do that.
#show Garrote
/cast [Stealth] Garrote; Rupture
One hot key to apply bleeds. So, if I'm stealthed, I'll apply garrote. If not, and I have the CP's, I'll rupture.

The macro I use for tricks of the trade is a little different. As sometimes we need to switch focus of which targets gets tricks midfight (other rogue dies, different tank needs it, etc etc), I use a mouseover macro. You mouse over either the target (like the person's body in front of you for example) or their box in your raid screen, hit the macro (keybound since it's a mouseover) and it'll not only give them tricks but sends a whisper to the person that they're recieving your tricks of the trade. You can change the flavor text to your liking.
#showtooltip
/cast [target=mouseover] Tricks of the Trade
/script m=UnitName("mouseover"); if m then SendChatMessage("You have my Tricks of the Trade for 6 seconds.", "WHISPER", nil, m); end

There is a stealth opener over on wowwiki (I'm at work so not snagging it), but basically you press it once to go to stealth, press again to pick pockets and apply garrote.
so something like
#showtooltip Garrote
/cast stance [stealth] (or however that part goes, haven't played my rogue a lot lately)
/cast Pick Pocket
/cast Garrote

i actually have a set of Tricks of the Trade macros i like to use and works for any raid.
Using bartender i created a 3 by 3 box (9 boxes in total) for quick tricks targets.
the first, and most important is who my focus is
/cast [target=focus] Tricks of the trade
the other 8 are
/cast [target=(name of player)] tricks of the trade
With this kind of set up (and having them keybound) I have all melee as well as tanks and whoever my focus is as my tricks target(s) during any boss fight or AoE trash.
On Onyxia i was able to actually fully utilize the T8(.5) set bonus during Onyxia and put out over 50,000 DPS (thanks to whelps!)
Whelp phase:
Vanish
/equip slot 17 / 18 with 2x slow weapons both with Deadly poison to ensure maximum energy
Tricks on the tanks
castsequence Bladeflurry and Adrenaline Rush
Fan of Knives spam
What i noticed with this is i NEVER had less than 60 energy throughout the entirety of the whelp phase. The energy procs from the T8(.5) 2 peice bonus was absolutley absurd and allowed me to spam FoK all the way through.
Anywho, hope this helps someone :)

What kind of talent build do you have that allows Overkill, Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush? Is it only useful for large trash pulls like the Onyxia whelps?
draph24 Sep 30th 2009 2:51PM
Forgot to mention - i am mutilate spec, so the Vanish was for the Overkill buff.
Tickle Oct 2nd 2009 5:26AM
Now how on earth are you Mutilate with Adrenaline Rush?
Last I heard there was 71 talentpoints..

/dismount [mounted, noflying]
/stopmacro [stealth]
/cast Stealth [nocombat]
/cast [nostealth, combat, harm] Kick
Add in whatever your favor ability is. I used Kick in this example. You have a spammable stealth button that will also Kick when you are in combat.
/cast [nostealth] Stealth
/cast [stealth, harm] Ambush
/cast [stealth] Distract
/cast [nostealth, combat, harm] Sinister Strike
This is the above in a non-spammable form with the ability to use it in all states, from stealth and and ememy targeted, etc.
BTW this is a very kewl site for helping with Macros: http://www.macroexplain.com/

If u have Preparation u can use this macro -
#showtooltip Preparation
/cast Sprint
/cast Evasion
/cast Preparation
... so if ur gonna use Preparation and one or both of those abilities (Sprint/Evasion) isn't on cooldown then u might as well use them up before refreshing their cooldown.
Yoe Oct 1st 2009 3:19PM
This one is a little bettter, the problem with your's is that you can't use it in stealth as evasion will break it so with the modifier nostealth it will only cast evasion when not stealthed
#show Preparation
/cast [nostealth] Evasion
/stopcasting
/cast sprint
/stopcasting
/cast preparation
Also added stopcasts so you don't need to spam this
Ethelgrey Sep 30th 2009 3:47PM
For fast ToT switching mid-combat, I actually use 2 macros. The first is a mouseover blind macro that I use to quickly set my focus target. It obviously doesn't cast the blind on a friendly target :)
#showtooltip Blind
/focus [target=mouseover]
/stopmacro [target=mouseover,noharm][target=mouseover,dead]
/cast [target=mouseover] Blind
/p %f has been blinded. DO NOT TOUCH!
The 2nd macro is the actual tricks macro:
#showtooltip Tricks of the Trade
/cast [target=focus]Tricks of the Trade
/stopmacro [nogroup]
/p *** Tricks of the Trade ***
On another note, I'd like to recommend the mod TrickorTreat for all rogues interested in using Tricks regularly (which should be all of us!)
It sends whispers back and forth without having to build it into your macro, and it will also tell you how much extra damage you did based off the 15% buff. Very useful for knowing how well you're timing the ToT synergy with cooldowns and energy pooling.
Kajira Oct 1st 2009 2:30PM
i did go to look at Tricks, but as it is no longer being maintained and is several patches behind, i would not expect it to remain viable for long.
jjtwalton Sep 30th 2009 6:29PM
Just got my Rogue to 63, so while I can't use these yet, they're definitely something i'll pick up at 75+. Thanks for the WoW.com Rogue community for sharing.

Some macros I use to make poisons easier:
#showtooltip
/use [mod:alt] Instant Poison IX; Wound Poison VII
#showtooltip
/use [mod:alt] Anesthetic Poison II; Deadly Poison IX
#showtooltip
/use [mod:alt] Crippling Poison; Mind-numbing Poison
Those three next to my macros to show my current weapons lets me poison quick and easy.
#showtooltip
/use 16
#showtooltip
/use 17

Nice...
Thanks Christian. Unlike my Huntard, I've only really used a couple of macros on my rogue (the ToT on focus macro), so having more macros to use is helpful. Now if I could just break my clicking habit and use key binds more.
In PvP, I always forget to use Preparation (even though that is why I am using the spec I am) and always forget to use Cold Blood. So those 2 macros alone are very helpful.
Likewise, I've also forgotten to actually target something in my FoK frenzy, so the start attack macro is also nice too.

I'm a newbie player. Is anyone here who can tell me what are u doin' with these "macros"??? These are makin' easier to use spells or attacks or what?
