Shifting Perspectives: Leveling 71-80, part 2

LEVEL 79
- Claw, rank 8: standard upgrade. /sigh.
- Healing Touch, rank 15: standard upgrade.
- Maul, rank 10: standard upgrade.
- Ravage, rank 7: standard upgrade.
- Rebirth, rank 7: standard upgrade, but stock up on Starleaf Seeds unless you're rocking a Glyph of Unburdened Rebirth.
- Tiger's Fury, rank 6: standard upgrade.
- Wrath, rank 12: standard upgrade.
Hallelujah! Until Cataclysm hits and everyone rerolls to a worgen, this is as far as you'll get, and now it's time to hit the trainer for one last round of ridiculously overpriced skill-ups and talent ranks.
- Nourish: For years, druids were the sole healing class in the game without access to two key things: a). an out-of-combat resurrection, and: b). a flash heal. Both issues were dealt with for Wrath, and while you've had Revive for a while, it'll take you until 80 to get Nourish. Oddly enough, the skill didn't go live to great fanfare on the Wrath beta because it was competing against the Healing Touch glyph, and early on, that wasn't much of a contest. As we've previously observed, Nourish has had the motherloving snot buffed out of it since Wrath went live in addition to getting a glyph, while the other druid mainstays -- out of 5-second mana regeneration and the workhorse Lifebloom -- have been nerfed. So how's it supposed to be used? To an experienced resto, it's an answer to the classic-and-BC question, "How do we deal with burst damage when Nature's Swiftness and Swiftmend are on cooldown?" -- but you can also use it in a proactive fashion. A glyphed Nourish on a tank with full HoT's running is a beefy heal with a decent raid-buffed crit rate (although you're still not going to get anywhere near the crit rates of, say, a paladin or a shaman). And what makes Nourish better than a glyphed Healing Touch these days? Lissanna had a recent look at the issue here that should be pretty illuminating for anyone interested in how these two spells play against each other ingame (don't miss the comments section either).
- Gift of the Wild, rank 4: standard upgrade. Don't forget to hit a reagent vendor and purchase some Wild Spineleaf.
- Hurricane, rank 5: standard upgrade.
- Lacerate, rank 3: standard upgrade.
- Lifebloom, rank 3: standard upgrade.
- Mark of the Wild, rank 9: standard upgrade.
- Moonfire, rank 14: standard upgrade.
- Rejuvenation, rank 14: standard upgrade.
- Revive, rank 7: standard upgrade.
- Rip, rank 9: standard upgrade.
- Shred, rank 9: standard upgrade.
- Tranquility, rank 7: standard upgrade.

Every week, Shifting Perspectives treks across Azeroth in pursuit of truth, beauty, and insight concerning the Druid class. Sometimes it finds the latter, or something good enough for government work. Whether you're a Bear, Cat, Moonkin, Tree, or -- for some unaccountable reason -- stuck in caster form, we've got the skinny on Druid changes in patch 3.2, questions and answers on new Bear and Cat forms, and thoughts on why you should be playing the class (or why not).Filed under: Druid, Analysis / Opinion, Features, Leveling, Guides, (Druid) Shifting Perspectives

Praise Jah indeed.

I'll always be proud of my Swift Flight Form feat of strength. It took a damn long time to do, but it was damn worth it. Although I do miss the ability to park my regular crow somewhere and say "Nevermore." Bah, it's a fair trade for the best epic flying "mount" in the game.

I totally agree with you... the swift flight form quest is GREAT, and i feel like everyone should do it. It's a shame most people wont. Personally, i did like a lot of people and bought it from the trainer (it took me a while past 70 to get 5000g :P), but then i went back and did the quest, which i absolutely dont regret. Aside from being cool, you also get the idol of the raven goddess, which i'm STILL using as part of my resto set, despite every other piece being a northrend epic. Plus the chance to farm anzu for your reins of the raven lord :)

Thankfully for all us who bought the swift flight form from the trainer the quest chain is still aviable. I bought the form at 77 and then went back at 80 and did the quest chain for the chance to farm anzu and to experience the epic quest chain. For all the druids out there that haven't done it i'll say that you've missed a truely epic chain and i hightly suggest you go do it.
In my opinion the epic flight form chain is one of the three things every 80 druid should try to do, the two others being farming anzu for the mount, and grind for the Guardian of Cenarius title. Both of wich are easily soloable at 80 (getting the mount is random but if one keep at it it's boud to drop sooner or later).

I may be missing something, but why would a paladin/shaman have a higher crit rate than nourish, I haven't played a healadin but looking at their talents they don't seem to come close to the 32% increased crit chance from talents alone that Nourish gets.
Cyrus Sep 30th 2009 1:05PM
I think your math is off, isn't it? I see 28 percent increase crit chance from talents alone: 25 percent from Nature's Bounty and 3 percent from Natural Perfection. Holy pallies get a static 11 percent crit from talents in the holy tree and another 5 percent from Conviction in the ret tree, which is less then druids at first, but then they also have (a) Infusion of Light, which increases the crit chance of a Holy Light after a crit Holy Shock by a whole 20 percent, so their crits beget more crits, and (b) Divine Favor, getting a 100 percent crit chance for one heal every two minutes.
But even if you're right, gear choices make a difference too, and/or itemization by Blizzard itself. Crit rating is relatively unimportant for druids because a big chunk of our heals comes from HoTs, which can't crit. Sure, we do have some heals that crit, but it's not like for paladins or shamans, for whom every single healing spell (not totally sure about this, my shammy is only in the 20s) can be a crit. Also, for paladins, crits are the main way of regenerating mana. Spirit is useless for them, and MP5 is nice but not nearly as nice at Illumination. So paladins have more crit just because it's more important to them than to druids.
Rastakitty Sep 30th 2009 5:12PM
The other 4 were from natures majesty in the balance tree.
Thanks for the explanation Cyrus, that makes a lot of sense and helps the classes still have a distinctive feel.

Allison; content aside, your posts always include some damn stunning images. Touche!
Quorniya Sep 30th 2009 1:58PM
Allison, your guides are always fantastic, and this one is no exception. With the links to all of the other leveling guides (plus the gearing and rep guides), this post should be the first stop for any new druid. I always look forward to reading your posts because they're so well done.

Well, this certainly wants me to continue my druid who just dinged 70 last night. Not like I really needed anymore reasons(at this rate, druid's going to end up being my main in Cataclysm...).
Great pictures, too *slight drool @ epic flight form*

In case any new druids are reading this and wondering if questing for Swift Flight Form will give you Artisan Riding for free, it won't. Artisan Riding is a prereq for starting the quest.

err, Savage Roar is more like Hunger for Blood, except bigger damage bonus, no bleed required and costs combo points instead of energy.

My druid is a re-roll after Wrath came out, so I did miss out on doing the epic flight form questline (trying to find at level groups at that time was impossible!). So I continued onto 80 and soloed the questline, including the H SH boss.
I did however refrain from turning in the last quest and continued soloing it til I got the Raven Lord Mount. All I can say is thankgod for prowl ... so much trash avoided. Soloing that room on heoric is hard - but defiantely possible.
Note: if you want to farm for the mount - dont turn in the last quest, you will lose your key
Evelinda Sep 30th 2009 10:01PM
actually, you can just ask the guy who gives you the key in the first place to give you another one after you've done the quest, and this one is permanant :)
Carlos Sep 30th 2009 10:53PM
Never fear! the key will be returned to you upon completion of the quest- all you need to do is accept the next quest offered after recieving your shiny swift flight form achievement :)

Allison, I just wanted to thank you again for the awesome leveling guides. You helped me finally get over whatever weird mental block I had about druids and now I finally got one to cat and am merrily pouncing my way through the old world. :D

for the 71-80 leveling druids; STICK TO QUESTS! My lvl 78 druid was attempting to level and finish off exhaulted rep with cenarion expedition by grinding on free booting pirates for ears in Borean Tundra... my lvl 74 rogue with worse gear did better DPS and (thanks to the self heal from herbalism) had less down time than my lvl 78 feral specced druid, when grinding on the same Borean mobs.
Leveling as resto might even be faster than leveling as feral (depending on server) as groups are always 'LF1M healer for ____ instance' and seem to shun feral specced druids either as tank OR DPS.
If you have PvP aspirartions, reroll rogue now, even in 'world' situations my rogue had a much better kill to death ratio than my feral druid did.
Despite their claims, blizzard really is biased when it comes to the PvP performance of melee, PvP specced rogue effectiveness vs melee, PvP specced druid effectiveness when equally geared. I tried on both a feral druid and a rogue who flip/flopped between FotM PvP specs. Sadly, there really is no "good" feral PvP spec.

Not to be a critic or so (awesome guide love it) but the cat forme swipe at lv 71 is imho worth mentioning: your first aoe ability as a feral that actually does damage
It has its uses while lv'ing (though I know pretty well that it only comes to its full glory in instances/raids)
Otherwise: nice guide, hope a lot more peeps are now busy rerolling a nice lil' druid
