Patch 3.3 PTR: Quel'Delar and the new Icecrown instance

That's a good question, and as of Patch 3.3, we're about to become far more intimate with it. At present all we know about Quel'Delar is the area near the Argent Tournament called Quel'Delar's Rest (as seen above), where a massive dragon skull seems impaled on a sword half buried in the ice. Speculation on the sword, the thing it is impaling, and whether or not we'd get to pull it out of the ice (as well as to links to Quel'Serrar/Quel'Zaram, famous swords with the Quel prefix meaning High in Thalassian/Darnassian) look to be on the verge of being solved.
It seems that MMO-Champion has found a whole series of spells related to Quel'Delar and the new Icecrown instances in the latest PTR build. You apparently need to bring the blade into the Forge of Souls and temper it, then bring the tempered blade to someone, possibly Krasus, which then possibly phases you into a battle to cleanse an evil form of the sword. Please keep in mind this is all speculation based on spell descriptions, but at the very least we know that there's more to that patch of barren ice near the Tournament than we'd been led to believe. It's apparent from the descriptive text on this spell that Quel'Delar is deeply connected to Icecrown Citadel.
Is Quel'Delar eventually going to be a player item? Is it connected to Quel'Serrar, as was speculated? Does it want to help or hinder the Lich King, or is it connected to some other denizen of Icecrown? We don't know yet, but the time till we find out seems fast approaching.

Hypothesis:
This was a sword used by someone in ancient days to kill a powerful dragon.
It is needed now to kill/subdue/convert Sindragosa.

Is this our new Thunderfury? A tanking weapon with a massive quest chain connected to it? A dps weapon with a massive quest chain connected to it? or is it something that blizz is doing to mess with our heads? No matter what the answer is, count me in!

Blizz has already confirmed plans for a dps two hander for 3.3

This is the most interesting link to me:

Spell Description: 'Immerse Quel'Delar in the Sunwell.'
Does this mean we get to visit the Sunwell in its renewed state?
As a Blood Elf Paladin, I loved the lore about the Sunwell being restored by the Light and giving the Blood Knights a new source of power. It'd be awesome for them to continue this storyline =D

Yes I think so too!!!

I'm sure Blizzard announced that the new 5 mans would be linked and maybe unlocked by a long quest chain. I bet this is part of that quest chain.

They did, in fact, say that all three wings would be unlocked over the course of a quest chain, like Black Morass was.
I honestly can't wait. There's little in this game I enjoy more than a truly story-driven dungeon. It's been almost a year since the first time we did it, and I still get a little verklempt every time I have to kill Keristrasza in the Nexus.

It looks like you have to plunk it into the sunwell! That sounds very very cool.

Looks like it has a very similar model to Quel'Serrar (at least the shape of it): http://www.worldofraids.com/images/news/icecrown/weapons/quel-delar.jpg

Could it be that players have to reforge/purify Quel'Dela and then it compels the player to go to the halls of reflection in an attempt to shatter/destroy Frostmourne in order to weaken Arthas?

Whatever will be, will be.

Dear WoW.com,
Love your site, regular reader and all, but in the future could you make at least some attempt to put spoilers behind the break?

Well, looking at all the bits so far:
1) We have a quest to re-forge an old weapon. Old weapons are always stupidly powerful. The quests seem to have lore figures doubting we can weild the weapon without destroying everything AND we go visit the dragon queen's consort as part of the quest line so it's definitely got something going for it.
2) We dip it in the Sunwell, thats like taking a minigun and making the ammo shoot uranium tipped rounds.
3) We visit Arthas's bedroom with either Jaina (possibly the most powerful living spellcaster) or Sylvanna's (possibly the most homicidal female in existance, think about that for a moment. She's female, undead, hard as nails and pissed off, yeah i'd be scared too)
4) The quest chain speculation so far has something to do with messing up the frozen throne in some way.
All that considered here's my speculation: We are going with Jaina/Sylv to take a VERY strong, reforged weapon to screw Arthas enough that a full attack is possible.
