Patch 3.3 PTR: Shamans

Shamans
- Fire Nova Totem: This totem has been replaced with a new spell, Fire Nova, which is available at the same ranks as the old Fire Nova Totem. Existing characters will automatically learn this new spell in place of the totem. With a Fire Totem active, shamans will be able to use Fire Nova (fire magic) to emit the same area-of-effect damage as the old Fire Nova Totem from the active Fire Totem, not consuming the totem in the process. Fire Nova will activate a 1.5-second global cooldown when used and has a 10-second spell cooldown. The caster must be within 30 yards of the totem to use this ability, but does not need to be within line of sight of the totem.
- Talents
- Elemental Combat
- Improved Fire Nova Totem: Renamed Improved Fire Nova. This talent now provides an additional 10/20% damage to the spell and reduces the cooldown by 2/4 seconds.
What changes, you may ask? I'm glad you did.
Classes: General
- Default Equipment: Starting weapons are now more uniform. Rogues now start with a pair of daggers equipped. All other classes except shamans start with a 2-handed weapon equipped and the required skill already known. Shamans start with a 1-handed weapon and a shield, as they benefit more from the shield than they would from a 2-handed weapon.
- Health and Mana Regeneration: These regeneration rates have been increased by up to 200% for low level characters. As a player's level increases, the regeneration rates gradually reduce, returning to normal rates at level 15.
- Spell Mana Costs: These costs have been reduced for almost all lower level spell ranks. In general, if a spell decreased in cost with a higher level rank in patch 3.2.0, that spell now has the decreased cost at all ranks. In addition, spells learned before level 20 with reduced cast times and/or durations have even further reduced mana costs, proportionate to their reduction in cast time or damage.
It's pretty clear this is the patch aimed at softening leveling up in order to get as many people into endgame as possible with the time we have left in Wrath. On the whole, just having the option to do real AoE without losing your totem buffs in the process would be a nice change for all shamans, especially our elemental brothers. Adding the leveling improvements in and we have a solid if small positive change all told.

Hmmmm.... Magma totem pulsing while I cast Fire Nova? I like watching number fly across the screen.

My thoughts exactly!!

its nice really but i will miss the stun effect. is it me the only one who think its not so good. Ive read colums about that the fire nova totem stun is useless but i like to use it anywas. every crappy stun is a stun after all.

So, I have tried this on the PTR and it is instant cast. Definitely a buff for Enhancement in PvE and some needed AoE buff to Elemental in PvE. The Skill has lost its stun effect so a nerf to PvP Shaman to be certain. I will do some testing with it and see if/when it is viable to add to the rotation.
Edge Oct 6th 2009 1:57PM
The stun was anything but useless, and got me out of a jam many a time. I don't care even if it is instant cast it is a nerf to PvP and it really pisses me off. Why do they constantly need to change mechanics when people are just trying to learn them. I am finally getting good at using all my totems in PvP and putting some good use to the Nova totem, and now it's worthless to me. Congrats to elementals, hope it really is worth what every other shaman in PvP has lost. I didn't feel like I needed a DPS buff as enhancement, so it's nothing worthwhile to me.

Hmmm... maybe I was wrong in first assuming this would be especially interesting for Enhancement shamans. Is Fire Nova going to be instant-cast? For AoEing adds like in Onyxia, might we do a Magma Totem with Fire Nova and Chain Lightning like crazy?
I also think on fights like Sarth you can focus on the dragon and leave your FT totem over near the off-tank with the adds, then hit Fire Nova every time it's up... or will the damage just be too low to bother....?
I just love my Shaman.

For Elemental a cast time=GCD effectively negates the cast time while for Enhancement this would not be a good thing. I really do not see a need for a cast time on this as the GCD is penalty enough and keeps it in line with the shocks. Also, Talented and glyphed would get this down to 3 sec. cooldown. I wonder if using this along with Magma totem wouldn't be a bit OP on add/trash heavy encounters.
theRaptor Oct 2nd 2009 7:01AM
A GCD isn't that bad for enhance when we can have 4 or more seconds of our main spells being on CD. Instead of just spamming lightning shield at those points we can let off a fire nova.
Darkthunder Oct 1st 2009 7:15PM
Correct me if i'm wrong, my math may be a bit off:
Fire Nova Totem renamed to "Fire Nova", triggers a standard 1.5 sec GCD and has a 10 sec cooldown.
Improved Fire Nova talent can reduce cooldown by upto 4 seconds (2/4)
Glyph of Fire Nova reduces cooldown with an additonal 3 seconds.
Does this mean that a fully talented Fire Nova spell + glyphed, can be cast every 3 seconds? Two words if true: FRIGGIN AWESOME!!!

Finally. I can go back to my elemental spec if people ask for an AoE damage
kabshiel Oct 1st 2009 9:52PM
This change isn't really very good for elemental. It's not spammable even with the talents and the glyph, and since the nova comes out of the totem it still requires the elemental shaman to run into melee range and drop their totem there. It's also a PVP nerf, since the stun was actually useful there. The only thing this helps is being able to keep ToW up, which was the least of their problems.
Blizzard needs to understand that having AOE tied to a totem is not useful for elemental shamans.

The Fire Nova is IDEAL for enhancement - our totems will be in melee range at all times, letting us use Fire nova without special positioning. We have about 2 seconds of downtime in our rotation at times, IIRC, allowing us the time to actually use it. It'll also give us some multi-target DPS aside from Maelstrom Weapon'd Chain Lightnings. This is a very nice change.
Apparently, it's a PvP nerf for Elemental, though. But I play enh and don't PvP much, so I can't really say.
Zerounit Oct 1st 2009 7:46PM
Yes, the old Imp Fire Nova talent had a stun attached to it, and now apparently it does not.
Edge Oct 1st 2009 7:47PM
No I would never use it in PvE, if it has a cast time, it takes away from MW procs which are more important IMO. Those two seconds of nothing are several white hits that give more MW procs. So just like Lava Burst it will never be used by Enh. OTOH, it is very definitely a PvP nerf, and I think it sucks. We are losing a good AOE stun in PvP because Blizzard couldn't figure out how they broke Elemetntal in the first place, so they went with this lame "fix". You still have to get into melee range for it to be of any use.
Why the hell didn't they just do this for magma totem??? Then everyone would have been happy.

(Replying to Edge)
Do we know it has a cast time? Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see anything about a cast time in the note. It could very well be instant, with the 1.5 global cooldown afterward being the tradeoff, rather than a cast time. If it's instant, what I said is true. If it has a cast time, then you're right, and it's useless to enh in any practical capacity.
Microtonal Oct 1st 2009 11:00PM
It has no cast time. It's an instant spell subject to the same standard 1.5 second GCD that everything else is.
I, too, think that this is a really nice bonus for enhancement, and depending on how much damage it does and how the cooldown comes together with those of SS, ES, LL, and MW procs, it might even be worth using all the time, not just on multi-target fights.
Multiboxing Oct 1st 2009 7:31PM
Multiboxers now officially will have an AOE "I Win" button, to kill all targets around you near instantly, whoot!
As taken from: http://multiboxing.tv/forums/f2/holy-cow-huge-list-3-3-a-995.html
"So with 5 Shamans doing 5x Fire Novas + 5x Instant EM-> Thunderstorm, you are capable of doing this instantly in point blank AOE fashion:
40,000-45,000 damage to all targets around you in 1 instant button mash. Pretty much, we now have an instant "I Win" AOE button."
Multiboxing Shamans rejoice!!
Multiboxing Oct 1st 2009 7:33PM
I should mention that this instant "AOE I Win" button would be dependent upon the 1.5 GCD not including instant cast spells like thunderstorm. If it did, well, then our "AOE I Win" will take 1.5sec to do :)
Angus Oct 1st 2009 7:41PM
I don't see this change as a boost to Elemental AE.
You would have to run into melee range and drop ToW, then do the nova thing at point blank, or run back out.
Multiboxing Oct 1st 2009 7:46PM
It is huge!
Imagine for a moment you are 5 multiboxed Shamans, guarding a node in Alterac Valley. Your strategy is to drop all your totems in preparation of the 10 alliance that are running your way, thinking to steamroll you off the flag you are guarding.
They get close to you and BAM, Thunderstorm->Fire Nova, all 10 alliance instantly killed.
Such is the power of multiboxing shamans.
By the way, have you seen what 5 fire nova totems do as they are right now? They still wreck in PVP quite well, especially when timed with 5x Thunderstorms. I've wiped many alliance groups before. You can watch me http://justin.tv/multiboxing in a couple hours to see some live video of 5x Shamans doing fire novas in AV.
