Breakfast Topic: The Lessons of the Wrathgate
I was interested to find out via our very own Mike Schramm the Fleshcrafter that Blizzard has a YouTube channel now. The main reason I was interested? Because I can watch the Wrathgate cinematic several times a day and not get tired of it. It's simply one of the things I enjoyed most about Wrath of the Lich King, a potent, powerful and personally experienced series of soloable quests that leads to an awesome rampage through Undercity that creates more tension and drama than it solves. No matter what toon, I've made sure to go through this complete quest chain as soon as I can, as both Horde and Alliance get to see some fantastic lore goodness and interact as near equals with the big figures of their respective factions.
Who gets to escort Jaina to her meeting with Thrall? You do. Think of it this way: remember in WCIII when Rexxar and Thrall met up with Jaina? This time, it was you and Thrall. It really did an amazing job of injecting immediate, powerful connection between your character and the great figures of the factions, as well as bringing the war against the Lich King (and the presence of other forces seeking to take advantage of it, ala Putress and Varimathras) back home to the cities of old Azeroth. Who can forget seeing Orgrimmar crowded with refugees?
Moreover, watching the Alliance soldiers rally around Bolvar and the Horde come sweeping in under Saurfang the Younger always gives me a bit of a nostalgic feeling. This was the culmination of the 'This threat's so big we have to work together' mindset that saw us form the Might of Kalimdor under Saurfang, that united us against Kil'Jaeden at the Sunwell. This was the last, best hope for peace and unity. Had Bolvar and Saurfang not fallen, had the Forsaken not been split by civil war, if a unified front persisted against Arthas at this critical moment who knows? We might well be looking at the first steps of real detente between the factions, perhaps even a pan-Azerothian league of states and powers that includes all of the Horde and Alliance races as Putress strangles it aborning.
It's clear that the lessons taken from the Wrathgate by Varian Wrynn, while understandable (frankly, if my best friend died due to the actions of those we were supposed to at least be tolerant of if not working with, and I saw the abominations of the Undercity for the first time while trying to capture the ones responsible, I might take the same tact he did) were the wrong ones. The upcoming battle at Icecrown Citadel and the Cataclysm to follow call for the same kind of ability to see past grudges, but both Varian and Garrosh have taken the Wrathgate and subsequent events to mean that conflict between Horde and Alliance is inevitable and necessary. Many will die who did not have to because of Putress' betrayal at the Wrathgate, the Horde's inability and outright failure to prevent it, and the Alliance's inability to see past it. Varian's rage has twisted his general tendency to look forward to battle into a burning desire to lead the Alliance into war despite the possible cost: his refusal to act to stop Yogg-Saron was a failure of a man putting his anger ahead of a King's duty to his people, and it was directly traceable to Varian's inability to forget the Wrathgate.
For this failure, Varian is clearly responsible, but so too is Thrall. Thrall's failure to actually lead the Horde culminated at the Wrathgate. While he's a personally powerful and dynamic leader, he's also displayed an inability to rein his own people in, or even to know what those ostensibly under his command are doing. As Warchief, he possesses an absolute role of leadership the Alliance lacks (Varian's rule is over one kingdom, even if it is the largest and most powerful one in the Alliance) and Thrall's inability or unwillingness to prevent the Forsaken from splintering and the actions of their rebel faction at the Wrathgate reflect badly upon his leadership. While Varian cannot command the leaders of other nations (even if it seems as if leaders like Magni are maneuvering him into just such a role as Alliance 'Warchief') Thrall can. And yet, he did not. His personal valor is unquestioned and his power capable of leading the assault into Varimathras' claimed domain even in the teeth of the dreadlord's armies (with Sylvanas' help, of course) but while Thrall is indisputably a power to be feared personally, his leadership has grown lax. His hand is loose upon the tiller, so to speak, and he only grasps it when the waves are about to swamp the ship instead of before the storm hits.
In the end, both factions have mishandled the opportunities given to them and have failed to learn from Saurfang the Younger and Bolvar at the Wrathgate. Ironically, for two whose deaths have so helped to rend their facions asunder in hatred and animosity, these two stood shoulder to shoulder, man and orc, and challenged the Lich King as equals and allies. It may be the last such stand ever made by members of the Horde and Alliance. And it certainly was one of the best. As we head towards Icecrown I can't help but look back on how we got there.

You could already find these videos on filefront and some on youtube, even in HD.
BUT, it is nice they have them here in one spot, all in crystal clarity from the people themselves.
All they need now are ALL the cinimatics in HD, and maybe some extra lore stuff in their spare time :P

Filefront? Youtube? You people DO realize that the cinematics are *on your hard drive* right? In Data > enUS (or whatever your language folder is) > interface > Cinematics.
You didn't think they streamed that to you live, did you? All of the cinematics, like model data, are local.

Fantastic writing job Rossi, and I of course love the Wrathgate questline and cinematic.
One thing I feel compelled to say: people often call Varian short-sighted and stupid for refusing to send aid to Ulduar, but there appear to be no Horde soldiers either. I mean, Varian's refusal didn't mean that Thrall couldn't send help, and in the cinematic he doesn't say yes or no.
Anyway, it just frustrates me that people rag on the Alliance for not helping in Ulduar, but no one seems to fault the Horde for the same inaction.

Especially since many alliance guilds surely went in there, even if not by a lore standpoint.

Anyone else want some of that blight for the fight with Arthas? (besides me) I also enjoyed the quest chain and the cinematic I really wish there were more it made questing a lot more fun.

One of the lessons the Horde didn't learn is probably "We've a weapon able to seriously weaken the Lich King, let's use it!"
Kanap Oct 2nd 2009 8:47AM
Man there are some not so smart people leading the horde......I vote Saurfang leads it. (yes I know Garrosh does in the next expac)

I would love it, but there are two problems:
1. People QQ over vehicle combat.
2. From a logistical standpoint, such a powerful agent would be bad news for a tank and melee DPS.

One thing to note is that world peace would likely be a more boring story then constant strife. That would also make current pvp content (except arenas) seem silly. You really can't look at the story progression without looking at the whole picture. Never forget that it's still a game. It helps make the "why" much clearer.
I agree that Varian's decision seems justified from his point of view in regards to the Wrathgate. However, he could have at least said something to Thrall when he was in Dalaran. Rhonin blasted Varian and Garrosh making the statement of working together and there was a pause as Varian waited for either of the orcs to say something. Garrosh made the critical chose which seemed to seal the deal for Varian.

As for the RAS and the Undercity, remember that in the 3.3 PTR all the Abomination guards have been replaced by Kor'kron. And the Apothecary Quarter has a Kor'kron overseer. The Horde is keeping a very close eye on what the Forsaken are doing now due to the events of Wrath Gate. Sylvanas's new right-hand guy is also a Kor'kron now.
Whether these Kor'kron answer to Thrall or Garrosh we do not yet know. They are normally Thrall's forces but the guy near Sylvanas has the Warsong armour.
jealouspirate Oct 2nd 2009 8:35AM
Really? I didn't know that...
Well, honestly, it's about time. That's the way it should have been from the beginning.
Even with Putress gone, the Horde would be stupid to trust the Forsaken.
Kanap Oct 2nd 2009 8:42AM
Yeah but abominations guarding a city just looks awesome.
WaterRouge Oct 2nd 2009 8:52AM
WHAT?! GLORY TO THE FORSAKEN! DEATH TO THE SCOURGE AND THE LIVING!!!
But seriously...if this is true (I will see as soon as my 5-hour long PTR finishes downloading) then I might virtually crap my pants. As a main Undead, I have put my faith in the abomination system! Who will be there when I need a gnome dissected or a Night Elf's arm to cleave off? Certainly not an abomination!!

Really? That seems strange to me. the Forsaken don't strike me as the type to take to kindly to a foreign presence running their city even if it is an ally.
Tirrimas Oct 2nd 2009 9:41AM
This...doesn't sound good. :-/
pandaba Oct 2nd 2009 2:21PM
Thanks for the info. I hadn't heard about the change.
Are the new guards the only change? Any big changes to the Apothecarium? My personal wish is that this area would be swarming with orc guards who would have some throwaway dialogue about how on orders from Thrall they've stopped the torture / experiments and how it was the most horrifying thing they've ever seen.
Valris Oct 2nd 2009 8:30AM
Well, you can always watch the Wrathgate machinima on your own computer, it's in World of Warcraft/Data/enGB/Interface/Cinematics folder (for Europe version).

***SPOILER ALERT***
Soo...what is this breakfast topic about? How we think Varian and Thrall are both overdue? Well not to worry, everyone knows that Garrosh will be the new Warchief soon enough with Thrall gaining unlimited power from the Counsel of Tirisfal. Oh wait....was that a spoiler?
***SPOILER OVER***
I believe that from a game-context, there can never be peace between the two factions because all of the PvP servers wouldn't be too happy. Thus it doesn't matter who's in charge or who's not being diplomatic.
From a lore-context, I simply do not understand why Thrall has become such a push-over. Sure he's the strongest shaman on Azeroth, which I doubt considering he couldn't beat Garrosh as easily as he should have, but he has obviously taken that for granted. I'm sure he'll be the first to send aid to the Alliance though once the Cataclysm hits, with or without permission to help.
I wonder who would win....Sylvanas or Tyrande. Also, after Garrosh, who would be the next Warchief? Saurfang Sr.?
ash Oct 2nd 2009 1:07PM
Maybe Thrall is sort of a push over because he can no longer lead just the Horde. Maybe he sees too much the needs of Azeroth as a whole and that's why he becomes the new Guardian of Tirisfal. The Horde after all is only one faction on Azeroth and its hard to be leader of only one faction when you are trying take the needs of everyone else into account equally.
I think of it sort of like when you are with a clique of people and they are antagonistic toward another clique of people. But, is you are magnanimous and see beyond your own narrow point of view you transcend whatever petty reasons separate you from people. At the same time you are also probably setting yourself apart from your clique because you no longer hold just their narrow view in mind.

Even though I got into the Beta near the end of testing, I did everything in my power not to spoil the game for myself. I leveled to 72, memorized the ore nodes in Borean Tundra, and that was that.
Despite my precautions, I knew *something* happened *somewhere* called the Wrathgate, and whatever it was it was damned impressive.
Little did I know.
I unwittingly completed the Wrathgate chain at about 4:30 A. M. (WoW is a Godsend for insomniacs). Not until Bolvar said something like, "Ok, brb g2g2 wrathgate" did the lightbulb come on.
Good Lord.
A shame there was no camera pointing at me while I watched the cutscene, but :O will do as a description. Then, when it ended, I was standing there, completely alone - not another soul in all of Dragonblight - genuinely shocked by what I had just seen.
Even discounting later lore repercussions, it's a crowning moment of awesome for Blizzard.
