Phat Loot Phriday: Ancient Hakkari Manslayer
Name: Ancient Hakkari Manslayer (Wowhead, Thottbot, WoWDB)
Type: Epic One-hand Axe
Damage/Speed: 69 - 130 / 2.00 (49.8 DPS)
Attributes:
- This is how you can tell this weapon is old-school: it has just one bit of green text, and that text is "Steals 48-54 life from target enemy."
- Which doesn't, on its face, sound quite that nice. But at the time this weapon was current (ye olde patch 1.7), that was a hot proc. Because the proc actually scaled along with spell damage -- if you had 150 spell damage, and this proc hit, you wounded the enemy for 150 shadow damage, while healing yourself with same.
- Unfortunately, the proc didn't hit that often, so this weapon was more of a weird equip for Enhancement Shamans rather than a standard find for anyone (Warriors and Rogues didn't find it doing that much for them). And of course even if you have 1200 spell power nowadays, it won't scale any more, definitely not at level 80.
- But then again, this was the kind of proc we don't see much these days -- weapons are so loaded with stats and the balance is so precarious that a weird proc like this, especially one that scales with the rest of your gear (what an idea!) is out of place. Maybe the upcoming stats revamp will help that.
Getting Rid of It: Sells back to vendors for 7g 38s 11c, or disenchants into a Nexus Crystal.

Thanks for giving us some old world epics!
elvendude Oct 2nd 2009 8:33PM
...ok, I have 0 interest in old world epics. Stuff my characters could get 2 years ago is not something that I want to see. Show me something I may not have a chance to get, or get yet. Not something I can go solo with a priest in greens.
(Sorry, Mike, I guess you just can't please everyone.)

Have you considered Wowhead or atlas loot?
Saltypoison Oct 2nd 2009 9:12PM
I would LOVE to see you attempt to solo Hakkar with a priest in greens.

and gl duoing hakar :) it wont happen :P, soloing as a dk or maybe a prot pala was possible but since death strike got nerfed DKs wont solo him anymore.
nowadays u still need at least 3 people one of which being a mage to dispell the pesky mind controls

oh, i dont know about that... i solo'd him earlier in the week with a feral druid after i'd tried to grab myself some mounts... i only had to kill the panther boss to make it doable, and once that was done, it was pretty easy... all in all, mandokir was much the harder boss to solo.

Something tells me you aren't soloing the blood god with a priest in greens. That thing is pretty nasty it ate my epic'd DK for a snack.

lol@priest soloing hakkar.
myself (hunter) and a friend (prot pally) twoman ZG once a week, mostly mount farming but we generally clear all the aspects and hakkar avoiding trash just for the epicness of the whole thing XD

This is Phat Loot Phriday, not Phat Loot Right Now. This is more about great pieces of gear that players think fondly of two weeks, a year, or four years after it has come out. Some, like this, are still noteworthy after two years.
The same cannot be said for your iLevel 245 pants from ToC, which will quickly fade to obscurity after Icecrown Citadel comes out.

You know, I have to disagree. I still very fondly remember my Salamander Scale Pants (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=18875). In fact, they're still in my bank. But, that doesn't mean I want to see them linked today. They're not phat. They're old hat.

I like when y'all do old school items like this. It's fun to reminisce =p

"Rogues didn't find it doing that much for them"
Seeing as rogues couldn't even use the weapon, I'd say it would have done sweet F.A. for them.

Man, I came to post this.
Joyous_Oblivion Oct 3rd 2009 3:19AM
Heh I was going to post about that too but figured someone would get their before me :)

While we're in Zul'Gurub, I'd like to submit the weapon that made me fall in love with polearms : the Halberd of Smiting ( http://www.wowhead.com/?item=19874 )
Too bad there's almost no polearm itemized for plate wearers... :'(

So if they survived the decapitation, they..just kept goin' without a head?

Enhancement shamans used to stack spell damage back in 1.7 and used 2.00 second weapons? What a crazy world (of warcraft) we used to live in...
maybesew Oct 2nd 2009 11:30PM
Actually no. This post is full of revisionist history. No classes that would have used this axe back then would have had spell power. Warriors = no. The post mentions rogues who only recently could use axes. Death knights didn't exist. Pallies were only healing. The prot tree hadn't been redesigned to be useful. And finally, enhancement shaman had neither talents nor gear will spell power on them at the time.
swampsquatch Oct 3rd 2009 12:40AM
Honestly, the only classes I could see actually using this would be a tanking Warrior or Enhancement shaman. But I doubt people actually worried about having spell damage so a proc would hit harder.
