WoW, Casually: PvP leveling
Robin Torres writes WoW, Casually for the player with limited playtime. Of course, you people with lots of playtime can read this too, but you may get annoyed by the fact that we are unashamed, even proud, of the fact that beating WoW isn't our highest priority. Take solace in the fact that your gear is better than ours, but if that doesn't work, remember that we outnumber you. Not that that's a threat, after all, we don't have time to do anything about it. But if WoW were a democracy, we'd win.
Patch 3.2 introduced PvP leveling and even though Patch 3.2.2 made Alterac Valley a bit less lucrative experience-wise, the Battlegrounds are still a really great way for those of us with limited playtime to squeeze some leveling time in. Before we go any farther, however, let me just say that PvP leveling is only for those who actually enjoy Battlegrounds. If you think BGs are a chore, then leveling in them will be a chore. Really, you should only be playing WoW if it's fun, so just skip this column if Battlegrounds aren't for you and we'll see you next time.
Ok, so if you are still reading, you enjoy BGs. On the flip side of the coin, if this is your main character on this realm, then I can't recommend PvP-only leveling unless you only want to PvP on this character. You will miss out on a lot of cash and gear if you skip questing entirely. Of course, if you have a sugar daddy main to feed you gold and heirlooms and are done questing before Cataclysm, you are already hanging out in BGs all day. Or you are playing Aion or Champions Online.
Ideally, you want to keep things fresh and fun by experiencing a mix of enjoyable activities during your play-session. Battlegrounds can now be part of that mix, without delaying the leveling of your non-maxlevel characters. Here are some tips for getting the most out of incorporating PvP into your leveling time:
Last minute bonus tip: If you are feeling like a PvP weakling, I have the perfect confidence boost for you: take a baby DK into the Battlegrounds. Being an OP, fashion-forward Death Knight in the 50's bracket will make you feel like a god. If you are anything like me, a few rounds of Death Gripping people to their doom while never leaving your objective will rejuvenate your PvP spirit. Note: Make sure you like the name you give this DK, because you may find yourself BGing him/her all the way to 80.
WoW, Casually is a column for those of us who are playtime-challenged. We've got your guides for choosing the best class, finding a casual guild, keeping your account safe and choosing the best addons for casual play. But wait there's more! If you have questions or tips about how to get the most out of your limited playtime, please send them to robin AT wow DOT com for a possible future column.

- Do the dailies: Pick up the PvP daily (once you are level 10 or above). These quests provide great XP that scales for your level. You can find the daily quest next to the Battlemaster in any major city. If you are high enough level, I find the one in Shattrath to be the comfiest one (less people, less lag).
- Pick up the Battleground specific quests: Arathi Basin has one quest and Alterac Valley has several that scale for your level and provide a little bit of extra fun while you are in those battlegrounds. You have to actually go to the locations in Arathi Highlands and Alterac Mountains in order to pick up and turn in these quests.
- Queue for two: Queue for the PvP daily BG and one other BG at the same time. Friday through Monday, the current Holiday Battleground will be busy enough to have shorter queues. If you are over level 51, Alterac Valley is usually busy enough to not have long queues either.
- Quest while you wait: Fishing and cooking dailies are perfect for in between BGs, but with the ability to queue from anywhere in the world and be returned after battle, any quest hub works.
- Beware of late night Battlegrounds: I don't know if they are sneaking online or their parents are just happy they aren't out shooting up and knocking off liquor stores, but late night Battlegrounds are heavily populated with foul-mouthed brats. They claim to be the best, but impart no coherent strategy, blame everyone but themselves and brag about imaginary sexual exploits. There is nothing quite like having a 13 year old whisper you about your lack of playing skills and propensity for gay male sex (not that there's anything wrong with that). I don't recommend the experience.
- Follow strategies: If someone takes the time to put a coherent strategy in BG chat, even if you don't agree with it, follow it. Often it is for partial premades and they have organized people trying to coordinate a plan. Also, any organization is often better than the haphazardness of any given PuG opponent. Or post your own if no one else does, but don't get testy if no one follows it. That happens -- particularly during late night (see above).
- Report AFKers: It's really easy, just go to the map and rightclick the stack of dots at the spawnpoint for your BG. Then choose Report All as AFK. After a time, they will be booted and be replaced by people in queue who hopefully want to play. If you tend to have a live and let live policy, I understand where you are coming from, but these leeches are making the game last longer and your playtime is precious. Boot 'em!
- Don't AFK!: Those of us with limited playtime know better than to waste their time doing boring things like AFKing in battlegrounds, right? We play to have fun, not be funsuckers. Don't be That Guy.
- No really, don't AFK: You say that you can do other things while AFKing therefore extending your playtime? I say go play a turn-based, single player game and stop bringing your teammates down. Seriously, don't be That Guy.
But if you insist on AFKing...: OK, so you're That Guy. Fine. You can still mostly AFK and actually help your team with a teeny bit of effort and communication. For example, in Arathi Basin, run to the Farm/Stable and cap it. Then stand there and inform BGchat when the enemy approaches. When you die, return to your post or be a sentinel at another non-contested objective. In Alterac Valley, run with the pack to Bal/Galv and participate in that battle as much as you are willing. By the time she/he is dead, the first enemy bunker/tower should be in conflict. Go be a sentinel there, calling out to BGchat when the enemy shows up. Remain there until it is destroyed, then advance to the next target. Apply the same "strategies" to the other Battlegrounds, although most of you AFK-types hang out in AV, so whatever. /glare- You can still contribute if you are on the lower end of the level range: The strategies for mostly AFKing above also work if you are a BG noob or a poorly-clad, low-level, non-healing class. If you are a healing class, find a melee player, follow and heal. Now that 80s have their own bracket, BGs in the low 70s have become an easier place to play, and you won't hear so much whining about "low level leeches".
- AV is still the place to be: Yes, the XP did get reduced with the re-bracketing, but it is still the best ratio of experience to time played among all the Battlegrounds. Unless the game turns into a turtle, losses tend to be quick and wins tend to be fruitful.

I quest until I have 3 or 4 bubbles left then I play a few battleground to ding. It really breaks up the monotony of questing, but I'm still getting gold, weapon skills and gear. It's just nice to take a break from the grind for a bit and it's my little reward at the end of questing. :) I see people in battleground that have been using them as a means of leveling for far too long and are way under geared. Coming into a 60-69 bracket BG wearing low level gear (I have seen level 40 - 42 gear in that bracket) is just silly. Spend 30 or so minutes doing quest that give good gear rewards and come back when it takes more than two shots to kill ya. ;) Unless you are a horde, in that case, only level through battlegrounds it makes our games quicker. x-D

Didn't they bring back the lvl 60 & 70 BG vendors in this last mini patch? The SW battlegrounds quartermasters were completly changed. They also brought back lvl 60 & 70 pvp weapons. just FYI. :-)
PVP FTW!

I remember wearing the Chausses of Westfall on my Pally until I hit 68. Didn't even realize it.

You're not funny or cool, you're just a douche.
AFK'ing is such an annoyance it's not funny, don't join the BG if you dont intend on playing.

C'mon, check his nickname...
Nothing you say will make a difference =/

I loved pvping in the lower brackets while leveling my paladin, but once I hit the 50s brackets and started getting WSG matches with 8 dks on the other team I got a little turned off by it. Once I hit 61 and had access to EotS I rather liked sitting in queue (usually fairly long queue times) and doing a bit of real questing done. I'm a PvE player at heart, so I still needed my mindless questing fix.
I completely agree with the late night bg tip. I was about to go postal on my teammates when I discovered you could do cross-server ignores and reports.

I agree 100%, the 50's bracket totally changes PvP because Dk's are so overpowered verses other classes. Frankly, Dk's have ruined much of this game and I think that they are one of the worst mistakes Blizzard has ever made in class design. They are also, in my opinion, the main reason why Blizzard is destroying Azeroth in the new expansion - to repopulate the Old World. I despise the class; I will not roll a Dk ever again because they are boring - kind of like the single player games that you can cheat your stats all to max at the beginning. Sure it is fun being overpowered for a little while, but after a while it is just /yawn.
Memo to Blizzard: instead of destroying Azeroth - get rid of Dk's - problem solved.

I'm gonna have to completely disagree with the strategy for being "that guy". I honestly think you should be doing the exact opposite if you're actaully away from your keyboard and can't type for any length of time.
If you're going to be "that guy" then you need to park your character with the largest group of players you can find. This is kind of a scarecrow tactic, because most enemy players avoid fights where they see they're out numbered. Even if your group does get attacked, the enemy might be beating up on the AFKer, giving the actual team mates time to whoop on them.
Do NOT park yourself at a captured point by yourself. Actual players that try to defend(like myself) will move on to a different abandoned point if they see someone on their map that appears to be defending it. You've now practically given the base away to the first enemy that rolls up, instead of having someone there that would have fought with their life your team now has someone there that's going to watch it burn. Very bad idea IMO
Dere Oct 2nd 2009 5:04PM
Ideally the "AFKer" wouldn't be the only person in the tower, and if they are the AFKer isn't the real problem in the BG it would be the other 39 people that think one person is okay to defend a tower, but i get what you're saying.
ZMES_Matt Oct 2nd 2009 5:18PM
@Dere
You're right, I wasn't really thinking of AV as much as I was AB. I kind of have a bit of a narrow view as I've been working on 3 alts in the 20-40 level range, I've been doing an absurd amount of AB. :P
But yeah, when there's 39 other people, parking yourself anywhere important is better than nothing. People will stack up to defend a tower no matter how many are there, cause you never know when 30 enemies might decide to zerg a place.
Dementron Oct 2nd 2009 9:00PM
Actually, it depends just how afk you really are. I've done something like this in AV a few times, guarding a graveyard or tower. However, I wasn't totally afk, just reading and watching the flag over the top of my book. As soon as someone started attacking the flag, I'd yell out in bg chat, unstealth and attack them. If it was just one, I could usually take them myself, and if they had reinforcements, help would usually arrive in time to save the node.
That way, if I really didn't feel like pvping but needed the honor, I could do something else and help out at the same time.

I didn't even read the article but that is the best picture i've ever seen on wow.com.
Ok, I did read it. But its still the best pic ever!
Rotclaw Oct 2nd 2009 4:28PM
I agree, that picture is awesome. Seriously, I don't know if it's a trade secret or whatnot, but where do you guys get your pictures? It's amazing how many times the pictures attached to articles give me a chuckle.
Robin Torres Oct 2nd 2009 4:34PM
I got this one and most of my non-screenshots from The Commons on Flickr. If you click on the above photo, it will click through to the uncropped picture which is even more awesome. It's taken in 1915, during WWI and they are "preparing for battle".
Men in kilts FTW!

You get a lot LESS xp for losing than winning a BG, and with minimal effort you can be of great help to your team mates. Even if you're not good at PvP, just do your best to travel with a group and be a distraction for them. You may die, but if your group wins the fight, then they can win the Battle Ground.
Leveling in BGs is slow enough even when you win the majority of your matches. Not only are you making BGs less fun for your team, but you're SEVERELY hurting their leveling. Just don't do it, unless the real world calls you away for only a minute (which happens), just leave the BG if it's going to take you more than a couple minutes.
Drew Oct 2nd 2009 3:03PM
I know you can completely level through the battle ground system, but don't you need to PVE as well? AFAIK, you still can't raise your weapon or defense skill through PvP. Has that changed?
nbcaffeine Oct 2nd 2009 3:36PM
Weapon and defense skill doesn't count in pvp
