I never knew people still used Flamestirke O.o I have never even found it useful even in Pre-BC. If i need AoE in Raids/Party I use Blizzard or Arcane Explosion. In PvP (In BGs i hate Arena) I'd never use it opting to use a CC instead of an AoE to get a better advantage.
No Mages that are on my server even use it, though I come from an RP server and since we "Fail" we're probably doing something wrong.
Could anyone please tell me why one would even use Flamestrike?

I use flamestrike in AoE situations combined with a presence of mind, and immediately follow the PoM flamestrike with either blizzard (if I'm at range) or arcane explosion (close proximity). I've always felt that waiting to cast a 2 second flamestrike in its current form (if you're not specced fire) is just a waste. However couple it with PoM and you've got a nice chunk of damage added to your AoE fight.
Obviously this is coming from the point of view of an arcane mage, and I am no mathematician so my figuring could be dead wrong. either way, PoM flamestrike is fun when you can spare it ; ).

Okay, i now understand it from a Arcane Mages Point of view, but does that mean it really is useless for Fire Mages and Frost Mages?

As a fire mage, I find it useful when you have a large group of mobs that won't die right away. There's something really fun about tossing a Flamestrike on a group of Onyxian Whelps and having Mik's spit back 34 hits, 29 crits (including Ignite!) at you. :)
Of course, assuming I'm with a decent tank and those 40 whelps don't immediately turn and eat me, I switch to Blizzard or AE as the situation warrants, but that initial hit is rather nice.
I wouldn't mind them increasing the radius on Flamestrike, though. It can be depressing when one of my DK buddies drops a D&D and my reticule only fills about a third of their area of effect.

No matter if you're Arcane or Fire, use PoM or not, I think Flamestrike is a good opener for AoE'ing trash, like the huge trash packs in Naxx.

as my icon indicates, as a fire mage i use flamestrike. when i have the time to get one off, it does a nice chunk of damage, and if the tank's holding the aggro for a bit i just love watching the entire group take a nice hit. FOOM!

My preferred spec is Fire/TTW.
On AoE trash (naxx/heroics) i tend to pop LB on about 5 mobs, or until I get bored of hitting the button. Then I blast down a flamestrike before spamming blizzard, while I watch things explode around me.
So yeah, I find flamestrike quite a good option, and with this reduction in cast-time coming, my dps'll go up. Woo!

Oh, forgot to add. I'm on an RP server too, we don't "Fail" D:

Flamestrike is good for stopping flag caps in pvp without getting into melee range. Especially with PoM, on the run. Blizzard does not break flag caps.
Also it has a surprisingly strong dot component and makes the ground glowy and makes sounds like "FWOOM" as the dot wears off.
It's a fun spell that does crazy damage when you can get it to hit something. What I'd like to see is for the targeting to be movable until the actual cast goes off. Then you'd see it used a lot more.
