Improving the character selection screen

The Addons menu is probably the first place a few tweaks need to be made -- as Mend Pet says, it would be nice to be able to load and unload groups of addons with just a click, but let's dream big. How about loading addons from directly within the interface, rather than having to drag them into the Addons folder? I would also like, though it'd probably be tougher to do, to see some kind of graphical interface, kind of a preview of what the addon might look like on the UI. Obviously power addon users customize things so much it'll be tough to tell what it would look like, and some addons have no graphical UI at all. But anything that can let me know from that screen what various addons actually look like or do in the game would be valuable.
Mend Pet has some good ideas for the character selection itself, too -- being able to sort characters the way you want would definitely be nice. Erik in the comments suggests showing other character information, like professions, beside each character's name, and it might be nice to see if the character has any pending mail or guild raid invites right from that screen, too. Of course, that increases the number of queries to the server, but if Blizzard can put it in the mobile app, it can't be too hard to put on this screen, too, you'd think.
Finally, even the character creation screen could use a once-over -- I completely agree with Mend Pet that there should be a way to check names that doesn't include actually creating a character. Other than that, I don't know of anything really pressing -- they mention that it would be nice to view more angles, and I'd suggest that it'd be cool to see various stances or animations, but then again, character selection can't show you the whole game even before you start playing.
Lots of good ideas in there. Obviously updating these screens isn't the most pressing of tasks, but it's true that, especially with a game that's been around as long as this one has, Blizzard shouldn't leave anything off limits when the patch notes come around.

I would love to be able to see a mini list of characters on my other realms, that you could easily click and join the game through. Having multiple friends on diferent realms gets a little confussing at 3am after a long gamming session :P

If they add more character slots, as I think they will have to with the new races I assume that is when it will get an overhaul.
So I guess its not a question of if but when and how. Assuming they do add another couple of character slots.....unless blizzard want us to delete character so we can roll one of these new race/class combos?

"There's nothing fundamentally wrong with it, as you can choose your character and get into the game."
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Shomy Oct 3rd 2009 6:14PM
If it ain't broke, you haven't added enough features yet
Sky Oct 3rd 2009 7:26PM
so u add features until its broke?
that sounds counterintuitive

It amazes me that is comment is voted up and the other two voted down. You people are unbelievable.

Gnomish engineering FTW!

It's called a joke, guys...
And yes, Gnomish Engineering ftw!

Even just adding Alliance/Horde after the name would make me happy. And a "last played on" date. Sortable by level/location/last date instead of creation time. Maybe even the ability to write short notes to appear on mouse-over, like, "remember to send those eternals to alt" when you hover over the bank character.
Oh, and a little picture avatar....
nekorion Oct 3rd 2009 6:31PM
Yes that stupid avatar needs to be shown. You have to stare at that picture in the upper left corner your entire career with that character, it'd be nice to see what it looks like before you make a character.
I just wish you could rotate the camera above the character, I generally view the character from behind and a bit above, so seeing that angle would give me a little insight into what ill be dealing with the rest of my life.

I think the ability to sort characters by something other than creation date should definitely be the number one priority should they ever decide to revamp it. Faction/Lvl/Last played should all be available at a click.

@nekorion; or download a unit frame add-on. I like SUF personally, Pitbull is popular, or there's xperl for the less technical or those who don't want to spend time configuring.

Installing addons is so hard, even a caveman can do it. Wait a secon-
The addons menu is fine.

Oh, and in reply to this:
"Of course, that increases the number of queries to the server, but if Blizzard can put it in the mobile app, it can't be too hard to put on this screen, too, you'd think."
How many people play WoW? How many people use the mobile app? Those extra queries may be acceptable for the mobile app because only a fraction of the players are using it instead of ALL the players.

specially where blizz is involved

I agree being able to load addons in game. What would be cool is if we were able to check if names were available without creating the character and see if the character has mail. imo just showing the characters name is enough we don't need to show professions or anything else.

There's an addon called Addon Control Panel that puts an "Addons" button in your menu below Interface. When clicked on, it shows all the addons you have in your folder, if they are enabled or not, and even has a button to reload your UI if it's necessary to enact the changes.
So, with the addon already in existance, it wouldn't be too hard for Blizz to put it into the general UI. Who hasn't needed to turn off an addon real quick because something was bugging on a boss and then you have to make your raid wait because it takes really long with all the logging out and resigning back in? With this, it's one simple load, and boom, done. It would be nice if they put it in.

I like the namecheck-without-creation, list-organizing, and mail/invite notice ideas...
Asrian Oct 4th 2009 9:03PM
You can already check names without creating a character. Just use /friend. If you het an error saying that you can't add characters of the other faction, or if the player gets added to friends, then the name is in use. If you get an error saying player not found, then the name is available.
This does require being logged in, though.

I've been whining about being able to sort my characters for at least four years. I'm no coding wizard, but it doesn't seem like it should be too big of an issue? With 10 lvl 80's on one server my "main" and bank alt change on a weekly basis and it would be great to be able to move around and prioritize them.
It's not enough to make me quit the game of course, but it would make me smile a bit =)
