Improving the character selection screen

The Addons menu is probably the first place a few tweaks need to be made -- as Mend Pet says, it would be nice to be able to load and unload groups of addons with just a click, but let's dream big. How about loading addons from directly within the interface, rather than having to drag them into the Addons folder? I would also like, though it'd probably be tougher to do, to see some kind of graphical interface, kind of a preview of what the addon might look like on the UI. Obviously power addon users customize things so much it'll be tough to tell what it would look like, and some addons have no graphical UI at all. But anything that can let me know from that screen what various addons actually look like or do in the game would be valuable.
Mend Pet has some good ideas for the character selection itself, too -- being able to sort characters the way you want would definitely be nice. Erik in the comments suggests showing other character information, like professions, beside each character's name, and it might be nice to see if the character has any pending mail or guild raid invites right from that screen, too. Of course, that increases the number of queries to the server, but if Blizzard can put it in the mobile app, it can't be too hard to put on this screen, too, you'd think.
Finally, even the character creation screen could use a once-over -- I completely agree with Mend Pet that there should be a way to check names that doesn't include actually creating a character. Other than that, I don't know of anything really pressing -- they mention that it would be nice to view more angles, and I'd suggest that it'd be cool to see various stances or animations, but then again, character selection can't show you the whole game even before you start playing.
Lots of good ideas in there. Obviously updating these screens isn't the most pressing of tasks, but it's true that, especially with a game that's been around as long as this one has, Blizzard shouldn't leave anything off limits when the patch notes come around.

Gimme a way to display the Screenshot of the Day from the official website instead of the login screen...

Well, since we're talking the addon menu what I'd really like to see would be blizzard opening a addon "store" kinda like the apple app store, where addons would have to be approved by blizzard, but after that you could install them from your addon UI and then they'd autoupdate when the game launched or was on. Previews like the ones mentioned in this article would also be nice, though many addons are so customizable that it would be unfair to just show them as a one default look (think dominos or pitbull, probably rare to find to players with exactly the same layouts on those). I know this would be a huge undertaking on the part of blizzard, but hey, wishful thinking never hurt anyone :).
I also like what I've heard about being able to switch chars "on the fly". Also things like seeing char portrait and being able to turn the camera around the char while creating it that have been suggested here already sound really nice :).
They could also change the char selection UI so that it'd look a bit more like... say a bulletin point list; each server you had chars on would be a "main point" and all the chars on that server would display as "sub point" under the main point. This would of course require each character name to be displayed smaller, so you'd not have to scroll all the time. Another thing you could do here would be collapsing servers, so just the server name and the amount of characters would show on that list (think tree style tabs for firefox, if that's familiar), to be expanded if you chose to do that (would be useful for players with lots of chars on lots of different servers, make the list a bit shorter). Hope my idea was at least somewhat understandable :p

The addons menu can be quite buggy, disable an addon on one character and it'll be disabled on 2 or more characters automatically, and vice versa. Kinda hate that

I'd like to make it an option to click the warcraft icon on the desktop and have it automatically load, log in, and choose the default character. To switch characters you could use a menu, and you could also create a new character from an in-game menu. You could totally get rid of the character selection screen with this option!
Also there is curse client for updating add-ons automatically, although it would be cool if blizzard made a similar program that installed with warcraft and launched through the launcher or something, a program that auto-downloads addons and sorts them by popularity, adds preview functions, etc.

I'd like to be able to disable the "Delete Character" button in an INI file or a registry setting or a tick in the options screen.
Daryl.

The number one change I'd like to see to the character screen is a nice little second column to the right of the current one for a few more character slots...
wladd1111 Oct 3rd 2009 8:52PM
I would change few things. a little table that shows gold, honor, etc character has. As people have already mentioned background selection would be nice.

Definitely yes on name-checking. I've created dozens of quickly deleted just trying to figure out what name is available. Particularly frustrating when you've spent a fair amount of time futsing with the creation options, gotten them to look just how you want them, and end up getting a name you're not thrilled with. Then having to go through the whole process over again. (And then sometimes you get the new character with the better name, and you look at the misnamed one and realize that one is better designed, and the whole process starts again.)
I remember one issue I had early on starting my Draenei was that the lighting on the creation screen was somewhat misleading. I spent a large amount of time deciding on my shammy's skin tone, and settled on one of the darker shades. Or so the character creation screen would have me believe. Once I got in game, I was disappointed to see that my shammy was substantially lighter than I had expected. I ended up not rerolling and I've gotten used to his skin color, but I wish I could've gotten what I asked for.

I definitely agree that there should be a way to change the lighting on the character creation screen. It's particularly misleading for death knights. Maybe have it so you can change between the different backgrounds as you create the character so you can see what you look like in all different lights?
RickH Oct 4th 2009 6:00PM
The colored lighting is a huge pain when trying to select that perfect shade of ghastly green or whatever. Several times I've had to go through the whole creation process, only to delete the character and start over once I got into the game and saw what they really looked like.
Cycling multiple backgrounds would be great, but mostly it just needs some way to change to a neutral daylight option like the Stormwind or Ironforge backgrounds.
Powazul Oct 3rd 2009 9:15PM
I can totally imagine a fighting game-styled character select.
And then when you select a character, they do /cheer.
...yeah, never going to happen, but image is funny.
A Nonny Mouse Oct 3rd 2009 9:47PM
It'd be nice for some lighting changes in the character creation screen. The lighting for trolls makes it very hard to distinguish some of their skin tones and makes them look rather different from how they actuall appear ingame, for the most egregious example.

I agree with pretty much every suggestion posted here or in the comments. But one thing Id love over all?
More character slots. That's all I ask for. Being faithful to my server has filler up my barn with with characters*. Now with Cata on the way with new class/race combos and the new races, I'd really like to be able to not have to worry about a character budget. two or three spaces would be nice. I'd think Blizz would have the technology to do it by now. I'd even be willing to sacrifice the number of toons allowed across all servers.
*= An aside: And yes, all 10 of my characters have a purpose. 5 of them I play, 1 is a bank alt, 1 is a Worgen name reservation, 1 is a level 4 with the 'Noble' title, and the other 2 are high-ish level alts on hold.
bugmaster Oct 3rd 2009 10:23PM
to be honest WoW's character selection screen is one of the best I've seen. I've played alot of other mmos and they all seem lacking compared to the one WoW has.
Lemons Oct 3rd 2009 10:26PM
I would really like to reorder my list, so I could put my main on top, and just generally reorder the rest of my toons in level of importance.
The addon manager (or whatever it's real name is) definately needs huge improvements as well. It's so confusing and time consuming to set up addons for multiple characters. Sometimes I'll be trying to set up the addons for one character and realize right after I've finished finished that I've just altered the addons for ALL my characters! Argh!
Instead of that crappy dropdown list there should be tabs. A sperate tab for each character and one tab that says "All" that would allow you to modify addons for all characters, and the Tabs would default to the character you have currenlty selected. So if you've got your shaman selected and you open the addon pane, it'll default to your shaman's tab...instead of defaulting to All like it always does now. Bah.
MysterX Oct 3rd 2009 11:13PM
Your wrong about it not changing in 5 years. Originally Warlock & Hunter pets did not appear . That's not a huge change mind you, but it is a change nonetheless.
syi Oct 3rd 2009 11:53PM
I really just want to switch my toons around, I hate that my main is liek the 3rd from teh top
Codexx Oct 4th 2009 12:26AM
I'd settle for being able to organized characters, with the auto-sort for date of creation, level, and alphabetical.
Derick Oct 4th 2009 12:41AM
You realize why you were downvoted, but don't understand why it's offensive?

I checked for my name availability via WoWarmory.. it was accurate =) got the name I wanted as it was free on my realm
