I like
this post on the General forums about being "realm-famous" and how to get there.
World of Warcraft has a gigantic community around it, but sometimes my favorite part of the game is that there are all sorts of little micro-communities in that big one. There's the player base at large, and then groups of people who read
WoW.com or other sites. Then you've got the realm forums denizens, and that's a different group than the factions on either side of each realm in-game. And then you've got your guild, and then within that, your raiders and maybe even your friends list. We're all part of one big group -- we all play the game together -- but there are all sorts of little identities in all of these little micro-groups as well.
And people can become "famous" in these groups. It's tough for us at a macro level to cover all of that stuff, though I like trying to keep up with some of it in
our Guildwatch column (and the picture above shows what happens when someone can become "realm-famous," or realm-infamous as the case may be. What's your experience with realm-fame -- can you name people on your own server, or have you ever gotten "famous" for nabbing a realm first or earning a reputation?

Our realms famous people got famous by spamming their own name on trade. Now all bored people continue to spam their name on trade even if they dont. Yes, our realm is that sad.

Similar here. Some have become well known from trolling trade. I never replied to any of the nonsense, but I was in the minority.

We have several realm famous people. Mostly just forum trolls, drama queens and people who post on the realm forums regularly. We have one player though who is well known on our entire Battle group. He not only graciously pays for a massive public Vent service for the entire realm, but he also makes some really awesome battleground strategies for pre-mades. Rath Strats, FTW! :D

Mmmhmm. I can't think of anyone who is famous on my server who isn't someone that spends 6-7 hours a day doing nothing but trolling trade channel.

Our realm famous guy on Nordrassil-H is Locknroll, an undead warlock.
He spams trade chat a bit, but it's his witty responses to people insulting him that have made him memorable.

I was definitely realm famous on my old realm for a while. Mainly because I spent way too much time on the realm forum being a troll. There were one or two other guys that were forum/realm famous too. None these days, though.

Trolling the forums isn't the only way to become realm famous.
On my realm, there is this tauren hunter from finland that reached fame as he ganked and corpsecamped every single alliance he could find. Even as grand marshal he never stopped. I have this distinct memory of leveling my rogue in duskwood, and suddenly having him appear and gank me, followed by a 30 minutes corpsecamp session. I even managed to escape and stealth several times, often loosing sight of him, but he always tracked me down and ganked me until I eventually managed to escape. He was kind of a forum troll aswell, but that wasn't where his fame came from.
There was also this moonkin who reached fame during tbc because he spent most of his playtime at the elemental plateau, ganking, or atleast trying, anyone who had ever attacked any of his characters (he posted his KoS list on the realm forums once, I think it took several posts to fit it all in). When we were bored, me and an irl friend always went to gank him, and he was ALWAYS to be found at the elemental plateau.

A guy got famous on my realm just be leveling really fast form 60 to 70, then from 70 to 80. Aside from that, no real celebrities on the Alliance side of Thrall.

I'm totally e-famous.
That's right, ladies. The 'e' is silent until we get back to my ground-floor apartment.
Babycakes! Where are you going?

Well you probably didn't even think of this, but on my server (The Sha'tar EU) there are some players that are famous for their dedication to the RP community and of course, for having impressive knowledge about the lore and being full of ideas on how to improve the realm community. Gremkarc(Orc Shaman/Chingo(Gnome Mage), for instance is quite possibly the single most famous person on my realm, from positive reasons. There are many others too, but I can't really think anyone else as widely known on the realm for just being an awesome, nice person. (and to be honest my mind just went blank, as is usually the case when you try to focus on something)
Of course there are those people too that are infamous for being twats but I won't be naming them here.
Rioriel Oct 8th 2009 9:13AM
Kudos to Gremkarc indeed, total awesome guy. Other than one particular vindictive bellend I can't think of a single person on our delightful little server who'd have a bad word to say about him.
And of course there's Geis. *disconnects*
