If you play on The Venture Co (US), you've heard of Impy. No questions.
Self proclaimed "king" of the server since pre-BC, he's always in character, though never irritatingly so. (Not that you don't find him irritating - plenty of people do - but he's not one of those pretentious melodramatic roleplayers.) He avoided all three level caps like the plague, instead walking around Stormwind on his Riding Turtle in various manner of gnomish kingly attire, demanding tribute from his followers through /s and Trade chat. He usually has supporters in any of the main raiding guild(s) at the time, and can guild hop as he pleases, never staying in one place for too long. He has his own guild, , which is a play on VeCo's Alliance raiding guild that opened the Gates. When King Wrynn returned to Stormwind, Impy reluctantly relinquished his throne and did a brief stint as the Czar of Sporeggar before returning to Stormwind to assert leadership over the Alliance once again.
He's currently preparing for the next expansion by charging 500g for Facebook invites and debating on whether or not to join the goblins, since they'd give him more money and he's about tapped the Alliance dry.

That's awesome, and reminds me of why I love this game. There are so many ways to have fun besides leveling and raiding. (not that those can't be fun).

Other famous Veco personalities would be Oakblade and Foulwin.

My friend and I haven't been on VeCo for about 2-3 years, and Impy still comes up in conversation every month or so. I still remember the one time I grouped with him, for a just-for-fun PuG of BWL about halfway through the T5 era. Everyone in the group was 70, except Impy was like 60 or 61. I remember thinking when I heard him on Vent that he wasn't anywhere near as annoying as he RP'ed. :)

and now i'm tempted to roll on Venture Company. on Alliance, no less.
Applemask is fairly famous on my realm. kickass paladin Alliance-side, but vicious back in Vanilla, and elicited an "oh, god, it's Applemask" when spotted in AV.
Findecano was another luminary of Thunderlord, but has since retired from the realm and forum. even had his own icon... thing (☼) on the forums, and maintained a realm/progression history for a long time.
