The Light and How to Swing It: Tier 10 thus far

With the Light as his strength, Gregg Reece of The Light and How to Swing It faces down the demons of the Burning Legion, the undead of the Scourge, and helps with the puppet shows at the Argent Ren Faire up in Icecrown. This week, he ventures into the unknown depths of the Mines of Data to bring you information on the upcoming tier 10 paladin armor.
Being as paladins, along with half of the other classes, still don't actually have models for their tier 10 gear yet on the PTR there isn't much we can actually show you other than a dwarf in his boxers. What we do have is the set bonuses which may or may not change by the time patch 3.3 actually hits. Both holy and retribution have been changed a couple times throughout the test builds thus far, so they should be getting fairly close to what we'll see. Protection hasn't had much change in it thus far, but the bonuses are in line with what we should be expecting. After the break, we'll look at each spec's set bonuses and do a little theorycrafting in some cases to see what they'll mean for us in Icecrown.

After the break, we'll look at each spec's set bonuses and do a little theorycrafting in some cases to see what they'll mean for us in Icecrown.
Holy set bonuses:
- 2 Pieces: While your Divine Illumination talent is active, your healing spells are increased by 35%.
- 4 Pieces: Your Holy Shock spell causes the next Holy Light you cast within 10 sec to have 0.3 sec reduced cast time.
When looking at the four piece bonus, I almost have to wonder why they didn't just give us a half second off of Holy Light instead of the 0.3 seconds. It's just one of those things where Blizzard generally tries to round things to a half or 5% of something. It just baffles me a bit. However, adding in haste, that should take Holy Light down to about 1.5 seconds to cast with Light's Grace in tow. Not shabby and Holy Shock should be part of every healadin's arsenal anyways.
The holy bonuses aren't set in stone and very well might change before 3.3 finally gets released. Keep an eye out for out coverage as well as the patch notes for more information as they have been tweaking some of the tier 10 set bonuses in all four healing classes.
Protection set bonuses:
- 2 Pieces: Your Hammer of the Righteous ability deals 20% increased damage.
- 4 Pieces: When you activate Divine Plea, you gain 12% dodge for 10 seconds.
The four piece bonus is a bit more interesting. Right now, we're not all that certain how this activates. It might be related to the actual spell cast which means we'll be able to have another tanking cooldown every 60 seconds when Divine Plea's delay is up. I'm sure healers will also like the fact that you'll be starting each fight with a little more avoidance and making the initial shock of incoming damage a little less. The other thought is that this will trigger every time Divine Plea refreshes from Guarded by the Light. While this would be wonderful, it would be fairly over-powered. Expect it to be more of the former and less of the latter.
All in all, the layout is fairly expected. The two piece bonus gives us threat and the four piece bonus buffs up our defenses a little more. The bonuses are fairly sexy and I'll rarely say no to another tanking cooldown.
Retribution set bonuses:
- 2 Pieces: Your melee attacks have a 40% chance to reset the cooldown on your Divine Storm ability.
- 4 Pieces: Your Seals and Judgements deal 10% additional damage.
As far as the four piece bonus goes on the ret set, it's a nice and boring damage bump for seals and judgements. Nothing game changing here, but still appreciated none the less. Boring and good is sometimes better than interesting and controversial.
All in all, it's a fairly decent set of bonuses to end an expansion on. However, as I warned earlier, none of these are set in stone until patch 3.3 goes live and even at that point, there's still debate as to how long they'll stay. If you have any feedback on the tier 10 bonuses thus far, please let Blizzard know via these posts in the forums.

Emperor's New Tier Gear?

Im rather happy with my ret 2 set and 4 set bonuses. I was a bit disappointed when they switched the 2 and 4 set since 2 set Tier9 + 2 set raw judgment increase seemed delicious. As far as the appearance goes, it seems that many of the tiers as it stands LOOK like some npc in game, so for paladins I would like to see something similar to the paladin gear arthas wears during the culling of stratholme seen here http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=27455#. Of course, I'd expect it would be a bit more shiny and textured to keep it on par with the other tiers, but the basic concept I feel is strong.

F Arthas! I hope they don’t give us his gear. It’s bad enough we spent the first 4 years of WoW being with cute tags like LOLET, but to add insult to injury, they make us relive one of the darkest moments all while Arthas did it (at least at the time) as a paladin. Oh yeah, don’t forget to throw in the fact he’s running around with devotion aura while he is apparently retribution with that big two hander he is swinging around.
Please, in the name of the light, do not give us an Arthas inspired set as a grim reminder of one our fallen brothers.

Spread those wings on the back a little farther apart so it looks more like a natural extension of the player and not wings just sticking up (like avenging wrath wings) and I would be all over that set!

Why do people keep linking that boring old white paladin set? It's the same "power ranger" model people always link right after it! Crystalforge was brilliant, and i'm sad i never got a chance to run around with it.
More than likely i think we're getting some sort of update to redemption. Crypt talker to cryptlord armor, emerald dream to emerald nightmare, DK with horns to vykrul with horns(warrior). And with the whole arthas being a former paladin thing, redemption makes sense. DK's also got a set very similar to his current one (fur spiked crown and all!) so i'm willing to bet it'll be either based on him, or whatever Tirion's elites are gonna be wearing down there.

Arthas did the right thing at Stratholme.
Oh yes. I said it.
SUnwing Oct 14th 2009 6:46PM
I'm real happy for you and imma let you finish, but CoT Arthas had one of the coolest shoulder/cloak combos of all time! Of all time!
RetPallyJil Oct 14th 2009 10:35PM
Seriously, what's not to like?
We have a tall, blonde, studly ret paladin (who uses a 2h hammer 1 handed, how amazing is that) with the best clothes in the game.
It just might be ... love!

Why a dwarf? I'm having trouble finding the "sexy". Is it hiding in that matted down beard? =)
macster Oct 14th 2009 9:57AM
If a dwarf in his undercrackers is no longer considered the height of sexy, than this world is going to hell in a handcart.
Killchrono Oct 14th 2009 9:52AM
But in all seriousness, the Prot bonuses aren't too bad. 20% increased Hammer damage is good, if very unoriginal (the what, third tier set since Wrath to use it?). Plus I'm gonna miss the 6 second CD on Hand of Reckoning.
If I'm reading the numbers right, the 12% dodge for the 4-piece is going to be AMAZING. It's probably going to be just for the initial activation and not the duration of Divine Plea, but it will be great for melee-intensive portions of fights to give heaps of extra avoidance.
t0xic Oct 14th 2009 9:56AM
Everything I've read tends to compare the ho-hum avoidance with the increased stam that other tank classes are picking up. Afterall, avoidance is a CHANCE. Stamina is always there. I'm neutral on the matter so long as it doesn't give one tanking class clear "dominance" in the next tier of content. That remains to be seen.
t0xic Oct 14th 2009 10:04AM
Actually, after looking at the other class bonuses it looks like "damage reduction" vs avoidance - not stamina. In any case, I don't think set bonuses are a huge deal either way. Maybe (prot) paladins just need something to complain about. My tank has been doing just fine, so no complaints here.
