Ready Check: Twin Val'kyr

Ready Check is a column focusing on successful raiding for the serious raider. Hardcore or casual, Vault of Archavon or Ulduar, everyone can get in on the action and down some bosses.
The Twin Val'kyr encounter is the fourth and penultimate battle in the Trial of the Crusader. In this fight, your raid will face down two Val'kyr bosses. They are identical in every way, except for the nature of their attacks. Fjola Lightbane will attack you with the power of the Light. Her sister is Eydis Darkbane attacks you with the power of the Dark.
The Twin Val'kyr fight is a confusing one. However, e should be careful not to mix up confusing with difficult. But we should at least be honest and acknowledge that keeping track of the "Stand in Light" and "Attack the Dark" can get pretty mindbending. To sum up, you get light and dark buffs that protect you from your aligned source of damage, and buffs you when you do damage to your opposite.
So, while this fight's pretty easy once you get the handful of maneuvers down, it can be confusing to talk about.
Both of the Twin Val'kyr share a single health pool, which is convenient because it means the only thing you have to worry about is what raid positioning works best for you. Let's take a look at their abilities. Even though there are two Val'kyr, I'm going to list them a single time. They do the same stuff, it's only whether it's the Dark version or the Light version you need to worry about.
Twin Val'kyr
- Essence - Fjola Lightbane is a Light creature. She takes less damage from raid members who are imbued with Light Essence, but takes increased damage from raid members with Dark Essence. Eydis Darkbane is a Dark creature, which means she takes less damage from folks with the Dark Essence and more damage from folks with Light Essence.
- Twin Spike - Inflicts 100% weapon damage and increases all damage taken by the target by 20%.
- Light Surge (Lightbane)- Inflicts 1,500 (25-Players: 2,500) Light damage to the Dark enemies every 2 seconds. Darkbane's version is called Dark Surge. (See the pattern here?)
- Shield of Lights (Lightbane) - Absorbs 175,000 damage in 10 man, and 700,000 damage in 25 man. It also prevents spell interruption. This ability is cast immediately before Twin's Pact, and protects the Val'kyr during the ability. Darkbane's version is called Shield of Darkness.
- Twin's Pact - Heals the Twin Val'kyr for 50% of their total health. This ability can be interrupted, but you have to get the Twin's Shield down first.
- Power of the Twins - Increases Physical damage done and hit chance by 20%. Each twin uses this power while the other is casting Twin's Pact.
- Light Vortex (Lightbane) - Inflicts significant Light damage every second for 5 seconds. It only affects people who have Dark Essence. Darkbane's version is Dark Vortex, and only affects people under the influence of Light Vortex.
When the fight starts, you will immediately see white and black portals appear in each corner of the Coliseum. Your raid members will each be able to choose an "essence" by clicking one portal or another. If you click a white portal, you will get the Light Essence. If you click the black portal, you will get the Dark Essence.
In general, everyone in the raid wants to be an opposite Essence to the Twin they are fighting. The Dark Essence users want to be blowing up Lightbane, while the Light Essence users should be attacking Darkbane. The exception to that rule is the tank for each boss, which also brings us to the first of three tricks for this fight. Assign one tank to Lightbane and one tank to Darkbane.
The first trick to watch out for is Lightbane's Light Vortex and Darkbane's Dark Vortex. When a Val'kyr casts their Vortex, everyone who is the opposite essence needs to quickly align their essence to be the SAME as the Val'kyr casting the Vortex. This is because when the Vortex successfully casts, everyone who is the opposite will get blown up by the massive damage. Once the Vortex is over, switch back to your normal configuration.
The next trick to keep an eye out for is Twin's Pact, which will do a massive heal to the Twins. But to interrupt that ability, you first have to blow through the Shield. All of your DPS must switch to the opposite color as soon as possible, in order to get the Shield down in time. Once that's happened, go back to your normal essence and proceed.
The last things are the the black and white orbs that float around. If they hit a person with the opposite buff, the orb will do damage. If they hit a person with the same color buff, they will add stacks of Powering Up. When you get a full 100 stacks of Powering Up, you get a super-duper damage buff for a few seconds. So, try and pick up the orbs of your own color. Not only will you protect your raid members against damage, you'll get to buff your damage considerably!
This fight sounds like a pain in the butt, and it is until you get the knack of when to go Light and when to go Dark. In general, you want to be opposite of the person you're killing. Everyone should be killing the Val'kyr who's about to use Twin Pact. The exception for when you want to be opposite is when a Val'kyr is casting Vortex, at which point everyone wants to be the same color as that Val'kyr.
Give it a few shots, and give yourself a chance to knock out the kinks. Once you've done it a couple of times, you'll find this fight incredibly easy. The fight itself supplies you all the tools you need to buff your DPS and blow through it, so have confidence that once you get it down, it will be easy.

It sounds like For twins pact your reccomending people switch the essence they have to dps the other shield down. This is a mistake you DO NOT need to switch your essence and the time it takes you to do so will wipe your raid. You just stay the same essence and switch targets.
CaryEverett Oct 15th 2009 2:24PM
Same color = 50% damage
Opposite color = 200% damage.
That's 4 times as much damage if you switch color. Even as a melee, I can manage to switch color, and run back before she's halfway finished with the cast, allowing me to put out over twice as much damage as I would have otherwise into the shield.
For ranged DPS, it's even easier, if you simply stand by the portal that is the opposite color of you.

I think Michael say that because of the Shield of Lights/Shield of Darkness with the opposite essence of the Shield currently up, your DPS can take it down quicker, and prevent that the Twin Val'kyr use Twin's Pact.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.
If your raiders have been doing what they are supposed to be doing (soaking orbs) they will have a run speed buff. And if your tanks have them positioned where they are supposed to be positioned (in between the portals, and a little to the inside) you should always have a portal nearby to switch.
The three seconds you may lose to switching buffs is easily offset by the fact that your damage is cut into a quarter by just switching targets. And that extra damage would be absolutely critical on hard mode.

There is no need to worry about switching colors to attack shields. the damange bonus does nit apply to absorbs.

Some advice for anyone who will attempt this on hard mode at some point:
Learn the fight the proper way first, this fight is super easy once you get it, but on hard mode dps optimization is a must. You will have to split your dps (and you will need alot, our guild, Bad-Example @ Drak'Tharon had over 8 people at 10k + and it was still down to the last second on the kick for the shield) as you will not have time to switch (unless you are on cast 4 of their specials and you know whats coming). Also you will need soakers to grab opposite colored orbs heading to the wrong groups, we use 4 and it gets a bit dicey at times. Other tips, rogues don't have to switch colors at all in this fight, you can cloak through the votex and blade fury for full damage no matter what color you are.
jam Oct 15th 2009 5:01PM
No, you don't have to split your dps into two groups on hard mode (10 or 25). Just tank the twins in a pile (several classes do cleave damage this way) next to a portal for fast color switches.
breaklance Oct 15th 2009 7:32PM
Balras is correct you shouldn't switch colors as long as your melee and ranged dps are somewhat even. Despite only doing 50% to the opposite shield the 10 seconds or so lost to dpsing the shield is voided by any additional dps you would gain by switching.
Thats the strat in hardmode(jnot switching), and its the strat because it works.
Also many of you forget that you lose dps switching back to your color.

I think we can safely assume based on these comments, that there are several different strategies that works and that there is no One Right Way to do this encounter.

You doubled on who gets the light essence in the clicking part "If you click a white portal, you will get the Light Essence. If you click the black portal, you will get the Light Essence."
2Legit2something Oct 15th 2009 2:11PM
Some tips...
-Tank near the light essences but not on them, as you will have raid members furiously clicking other raiders trying to change their color
-Interrupts are vital unless you want a 6min battle
-Our RL calls out "dps black/white" and "switch color to black/white"
Illumination staff...vurry nice

anyone else immediately think "Shield of Darks" after he said
" Light Surge (Lightbane)- Inflicts 1,500 (25-Players: 2,500) Light damage to the Dark enemies every 2 seconds. Darkbane's version is called Dark Surge. (See the pattern here?)
Shield of Lights (Lightbane)"

Also, the Twin's Pact heal is only 50% on 25 man hard mode. It's 20% on normal 25 man. We've done it for a couple of weeks now, having the Raid Leader call out "Become Dark" or "Become Light" depending on who's shielded makes getting the shield down and the heal interrupted very easy...for those who don't have DBM that is.
breaklance Oct 16th 2009 12:00AM
Also wanted to add here, you can precast the interupt BEFORE the sheild is cast. This is pretty gimicky, and completely unreliable BUT
If you follow your DBM or BW counter for the next ability, interupt right as the timer hits 0 you might interupt their heal. We did it twice in about 5 attempts before downing them. The other serious drawback though is that the shield is still applied.
curtisrutland Oct 15th 2009 2:15PM
What we have found helps a lot is to mark the two with Skull and Diamond. The Skull is white, and the Diamond is purple. And you should be attacking the target who's mark color matches the color underneath your feet.
Other than that, it helps greatly to have a raid leader call out each switch. I know, everyone can see the same emotes, and everyone should have DBM or something to tell them, but it just helps my team so much when I verbally let them know "switch coming up......twin's pact, switch dark!"
erknost Oct 15th 2009 2:21PM
We just did that fight yesterday night with a bunch of firsties, and sure wipe a couple of times, but ones they all watch the video in Tankspot and our wonderful and lovely tank explain plain and simple the fight it was just a walking in the part.
For the healers it's very important to mention it, (because in several places say something a lil different), because you are not a DPS it does not matter what essence you have during the fight, maybe the Powering Up buff do nothing to you, but if you collect the floating orbs you can prevent your DPS take damage! Also it IS important that you change you essence when some of the Twins Val'kyr are casting the Vortex, change essence its like a classic "don't stand in the fire".
curtisrutland Oct 15th 2009 2:22PM
Other tips that I have found useful. When they are almost dead at the end, after their last special ability, people don't need to switch back. Just keep attacking the same target. The bosses share a health pool, so when one goes down, so does the other. The real reason you want to split your raid in half (essence-wise) is to soak orbs.
Remember that during Twin's Pact, the Val'kyr that isn't shielded is going to hit the tank much, much harder. Healers, when you see/hear Twin's Pact being cast, be ready to up your healing on your tank.
Soak orbs! Do it! It's worth breaking away from dps for a few seconds to grab several orbs. Not only will this help you switch faster (because they give you a speed boost), it will eventually give you Empowered [Light/Dark] and you will significantly increase your DPS.
We have found that in normal 10 man, the tanks never have to switch essences. The healers can keep the one tank that will be taking damage from Vortex alive easily.
Also, something to remember: Repair when you're done with this fight. If you start the next encounter, unless you have an engineer with bots (seems to be a dying breed these days) you won't have a way out without hearthing/porting.
Tvat Oct 15th 2009 2:23PM
We all get the dps to use the same color and have them stay on the same target for the whole fight and dps through any heal from the opposite target. The only time the dps changes colors is when the vortex comes up that forces us to switch. It's money.
jrizutko Oct 15th 2009 2:27PM
Have your raiders play Ikaruga.
