The OverAchiever: Guide to Hallow's End achievements

It always starts the same. You stand in the graveyard of the Scarlet Monastery. You take a candle and carefully place it upon the Hallow's End altar.
"Horseman rise," you say, "your time is nigh. You felt death once. Now, know demise!"
He rises from the distance -- a little to your right, actually, as you face the tomb. The cackling voice and flaming horse make it clear the Horseman has risen again. "It is over, your search is done!" he warns. "Let fate choose now, the righteous one!"
While this well-known and titular fight against the Headless Horseman is probably the most recognizable portion of Hallow's End activities, it's far from the only one. Let's take a look behind the cut at what you need to do to become "The Hallowed."
Trick or Treat
This is relatively easy. All you need to do is visit one of the many inns across Azeroth or Outland. These are the same inns where you set your Hearthstone, so that you can build rest XP during downtime. You simply talk to the innkeep, choose "Trick or Treat!" and get a prize.
Now, granted, you won't get a handful of candy every time. You get a debuff which keeps you from Trick or Treating more than once an hour, and you'll need to let that fade. But this Trick or Treat dynamic is going to be pretty important -- you'll want to collect magic wands during the duration of the event.
Out With It
As you collect candy, there becomes an obvious and inevitable activity to be done with it all. That is to say, as any good 6 year old will tell you, stuff as much as possible in your happy little face, all at once, until you become absolutely sick to your stomach.
The six year old was right, and this achievement proves it. Once you've successfully gathered enough candy, eat it all at once. When your character pukes up all that sugary goodness due to an Upset Tummy, the Out With It achievement is granted.
Bring Me The Head of ... Oh Wait.
This is probably my favorite achievement title of all time. To obtain Bring Me The Head of... Oh Wait, you need to go to the Scarlet Monastery and enter the Graveyard. About halfway through, you'll see a small altar and pumpkin. Interact with the objects there in order to summon the Headless Horseman. The Headless Horseman will appear. Kill him to receive the achievement.
The Headless Horseman fight isn't the most difficult thing ever, although we can't guarantee his loot table has been updated yet. He's basically a tank and spank. Every so often, his head will fly off his body. Kill the head. Then, when the head and body rejoin, kill the body. Repeat until he's dead. The head can be a little difficult to target, though, which probably is the most difficult part of the fight.
Edit: We now know his loot table - you can find information about it in this post.
The Savior of Hallow's End
Every hour, the Headless Horseman will attack one of your faction's starting zones. You get quests from the Orphan Matrons, who beg you to stop him. In order to complete the quest, your goal is to put out the fires -- not to actually kill the Horseman. You'll have an easier time of it if your faction mates lend a hand, so it's best to get this achievement done early, when everyone else is also trying to get it done.
That Sparking Smile
If you dutifully trick or treat every hour, you will eventually be granted a toothpick. In order to get this achievement, use the toothpick. Voila, finished.
Rotten Hallow
Rotten Hallow is a little more difficult, but not amazingly so. It's a little different depending on whether you're Horde or Alliance. You've got to go to the Hillsbrad Foothills, and complete either the Horde or Alliance seasonal quests there. It all revolves around stink bombs (or fresh pine air fresheners), and whether or not the Horde get to burn a wicker man.
G.N.E.R.D. Rage
I've heard more complaints about G.N.E.R.D. Rage than any other Hallow's End achievement. It mostly revolves around whether you're comfortable hanging out in the battlegrounds for long periods of time. Essentially, one of the types of candies you'll receive in the trick or treat spree are G.N.E.R.D.s. While sporting the buff from this candy, your task will be to kill 50 players of the opposing factions. It's easiest to do this in the BGs, where you can kind of hang back and let the HKs flow in.
Check Your Head
Weighted Jack-o'-Lanterns drop from the Headless Horseman, which means killing him regularly will make your life easier. The good news is that since we're all hanging out in Dalaran nowadays, it'll be easy to scout out all the folks you need.
The Masquerade
The ultimate point of Hallow's End is to dress up in costumes. The various wands that let you take on costumes are a gift from trick or treating. You'll need to find other folks who have already gotten their wands, and ask them to hit you with their wands. Once you've gotten all the costumes listed, you're granted The Masquerade achievement.
Sinister Calling
This is the most difficult Hallow's End achievement, since both the Sinister Squashling and the Hallowed Helm drop from the Horseman. You'll have to kill him often enough to have the items drop and win the roll to get the items.
Tricks and Treats of Azeroth
Easy! Simply hit all the inns included in the sub-achievements. This'll supply you most of the items you need in order to get the other achievements, and might get you a bit closer to Explorer along the way.
Summary
Ultimately, the Hallow's End achievements can be alot of work. While they aren't individually too much trouble, they all add up to a couple busy weeks for you. But if you keep it up, you'll utimately become The Hallowed.

Too bad they wont add real costumes and not annoying wands.
Azhariel Oct 17th 2009 6:24PM
Is the Horseman farmable? I mean, one would assume so since he's inside SM and there are quite some items neccessary from him.. But then again, if he drops any good actual equipment (say, as Coren did), this could be a little imbalanced.
SaintStryfe Oct 17th 2009 6:43PM
He works like Direbrew - each member gets a daily to summon him. Everyone in your party can, and if you want to bring alts, go for it. In previous years, he dropped rings which were equivalent to Badge rings - so it remains to see what he'll drop - the rings purchasable with Valor Badges (my guess) or the ones with Triumph badges (I seriously doubt).
One time, I did 15 summons in one day. Got two people mounts, three people helms and 2 people swords.
we shall see what drops.
Gemini Oct 17th 2009 6:54PM
He's farmable as in you get a group of five people and each person has one summon per day. If your groupies have alts, you can get more attempts in.
Just like Coren Direbrew, I have a group of friends with a bunch of alts so we're going to be doing this, but if you mean farmable like you go in, solo him, reset, rinse and repeat, then no. He's a level 80 boss and needs to be summoned :)
Mr. Tastix Oct 20th 2009 8:59AM
The Headless Horseman is exactly like Coren Direbrew in the sense of how to kill him and how many times. Level 80s go to Scarlet Monasteries Graveyard instance, level 80s use the pumpkin to get the daily quest, level 80s kill the Headless Horseman, level 80s loot his body.
He has some pretty decent loot too besides the mount (I'm trying to get the sword).
You can "farm" him so long as you're with a group that has at least one member who hasn't done the daily. But personally, I don't like doing these kind of things if I've already done the daily. I'd rather someone else who hasn't done the daily go and do it in my place.

All that stands between me and my violet protodrake is the sinister squashling, but yes, unless they have changed it back, you can pick these up from trick and treating, as I did on two of my alts. Same with the helm.
Time to pray to the RNG gods.
Oh gods of the RNG, I beseeth thee. Grant me thy Sinister Squashling, and I shall smite all in thy name and you shall smile and know it is good. Amen.
johnthediver Oct 17th 2009 7:01PM
I pray with you brother. Damn that RNG. Squashling is the only thing standing between me and the proto drake too.
Covnam Oct 17th 2009 7:35PM
Same here, only thing standing between me and the Halloween achievment is that stupid pet.
Necrolord_Bob Oct 17th 2009 6:50PM
Toothpick never dropped for me last year :(
Sean Oct 17th 2009 6:51PM
Does the GNERD buff vanish when a Druid Shapeshifts? I know the costume you need for the Winter Veil equivalent does, which makes that achievement tough for us Ferals.
Banthis Oct 17th 2009 6:58PM
It's an actual buff, and not a shapechange, so it does work for druids.
Skarn Oct 17th 2009 7:12PM
Not, it does not fade. It's not a shapeshift costume, just a little buff. It doesn't actually do anything at all, just puts up a buff icon. You can also reapply the buff after you die, so long as you take some candy into the battleground. This achievement is VASTLY easier than the similar achievement for Winter's Veil, "A Little Helper From My Friends." For that one you could only get the buff from a major city, so once you died in a BG you had to leave to get the buff back. Also, for that achievement you tended to get targeted since it was obvious what you were attempting to do. The GNERD buff is not anywhere near as obvious, so you should be able to be a lot more subtle about it.

Nothing new this year confirmed yet? And since there wasn't anything datamined, I assume nothing new at all.
Skarn Oct 17th 2009 7:14PM
The only "new" thing so far is that the Horseman WILL be updated to level 80. He will likely be on the difficulty level of a normal 5-man or maybe a heroic 5-man. In other words, very easy. He will likely have new loot too, but no one knows what yet.
Phoenix Psaltery Oct 17th 2009 7:07PM
Starts at 1am server time tonight (Sunday morning), actually.

Skarn Oct 17th 2009 7:08PM
Note that for "Out With It," you can't eat just ANY candy. The only candy that will give you the achievement are the Tricky Treats that come from the Horseman. You shouldn't have any trouble getting them if you are farming the Horseman for a pet, helm or mount.
And yes, the Squashling and Helm SHOULD drop from Trick or Treat bags. It IS random, of course.
mibluvr13 Oct 17th 2009 7:17PM
I anticipate badge rings.
