The OverAchiever: Guide to Hallow's End achievements

It always starts the same. You stand in the graveyard of the Scarlet Monastery. You take a candle and carefully place it upon the Hallow's End altar.
"Horseman rise," you say, "your time is nigh. You felt death once. Now, know demise!"
He rises from the distance -- a little to your right, actually, as you face the tomb. The cackling voice and flaming horse make it clear the Horseman has risen again. "It is over, your search is done!" he warns. "Let fate choose now, the righteous one!"
While this well-known and titular fight against the Headless Horseman is probably the most recognizable portion of Hallow's End activities, it's far from the only one. Let's take a look behind the cut at what you need to do to become "The Hallowed."
Trick or Treat
This is relatively easy. All you need to do is visit one of the many inns across Azeroth or Outland. These are the same inns where you set your Hearthstone, so that you can build rest XP during downtime. You simply talk to the innkeep, choose "Trick or Treat!" and get a prize.
Now, granted, you won't get a handful of candy every time. You get a debuff which keeps you from Trick or Treating more than once an hour, and you'll need to let that fade. But this Trick or Treat dynamic is going to be pretty important -- you'll want to collect magic wands during the duration of the event.
Out With It
As you collect candy, there becomes an obvious and inevitable activity to be done with it all. That is to say, as any good 6 year old will tell you, stuff as much as possible in your happy little face, all at once, until you become absolutely sick to your stomach.
The six year old was right, and this achievement proves it. Once you've successfully gathered enough candy, eat it all at once. When your character pukes up all that sugary goodness due to an Upset Tummy, the Out With It achievement is granted.
Bring Me The Head of ... Oh Wait.
This is probably my favorite achievement title of all time. To obtain Bring Me The Head of... Oh Wait, you need to go to the Scarlet Monastery and enter the Graveyard. About halfway through, you'll see a small altar and pumpkin. Interact with the objects there in order to summon the Headless Horseman. The Headless Horseman will appear. Kill him to receive the achievement.
The Headless Horseman fight isn't the most difficult thing ever, although we can't guarantee his loot table has been updated yet. He's basically a tank and spank. Every so often, his head will fly off his body. Kill the head. Then, when the head and body rejoin, kill the body. Repeat until he's dead. The head can be a little difficult to target, though, which probably is the most difficult part of the fight.
Edit: We now know his loot table - you can find information about it in this post.
The Savior of Hallow's End
Every hour, the Headless Horseman will attack one of your faction's starting zones. You get quests from the Orphan Matrons, who beg you to stop him. In order to complete the quest, your goal is to put out the fires -- not to actually kill the Horseman. You'll have an easier time of it if your faction mates lend a hand, so it's best to get this achievement done early, when everyone else is also trying to get it done.
That Sparking Smile
If you dutifully trick or treat every hour, you will eventually be granted a toothpick. In order to get this achievement, use the toothpick. Voila, finished.
Rotten Hallow
Rotten Hallow is a little more difficult, but not amazingly so. It's a little different depending on whether you're Horde or Alliance. You've got to go to the Hillsbrad Foothills, and complete either the Horde or Alliance seasonal quests there. It all revolves around stink bombs (or fresh pine air fresheners), and whether or not the Horde get to burn a wicker man.
G.N.E.R.D. Rage
I've heard more complaints about G.N.E.R.D. Rage than any other Hallow's End achievement. It mostly revolves around whether you're comfortable hanging out in the battlegrounds for long periods of time. Essentially, one of the types of candies you'll receive in the trick or treat spree are G.N.E.R.D.s. While sporting the buff from this candy, your task will be to kill 50 players of the opposing factions. It's easiest to do this in the BGs, where you can kind of hang back and let the HKs flow in.
Check Your Head
Weighted Jack-o'-Lanterns drop from the Headless Horseman, which means killing him regularly will make your life easier. The good news is that since we're all hanging out in Dalaran nowadays, it'll be easy to scout out all the folks you need.
The Masquerade
The ultimate point of Hallow's End is to dress up in costumes. The various wands that let you take on costumes are a gift from trick or treating. You'll need to find other folks who have already gotten their wands, and ask them to hit you with their wands. Once you've gotten all the costumes listed, you're granted The Masquerade achievement.
Sinister Calling
This is the most difficult Hallow's End achievement, since both the Sinister Squashling and the Hallowed Helm drop from the Horseman. You'll have to kill him often enough to have the items drop and win the roll to get the items.
Tricks and Treats of Azeroth
Easy! Simply hit all the inns included in the sub-achievements. This'll supply you most of the items you need in order to get the other achievements, and might get you a bit closer to Explorer along the way.
Summary
Ultimately, the Hallow's End achievements can be alot of work. While they aren't individually too much trouble, they all add up to a couple busy weeks for you. But if you keep it up, you'll utimately become The Hallowed.

I'd like to see 232 level rings, 245 would be fan-friggin-tastic, but fully expect maybe 219 at the highest.

YOU ARE RUNNING OUT OF TIME, SINISTER SQUASHLING!
How many years have you not dropped for me? Ohhh ... but this year will be different!
Dragundam Oct 17th 2009 7:57PM
I have a feeling I'm screwed considered I know shit all about pvp, don't want to know anything about it, hate the very idea of it, and thus am worse than terribad at it. :/

Ditto

Go into Alterac Valley, follow everyone else, and just hang out near the back. You should get to 50 HKs in no time.
Although to be honest, PvP is fun once you get past that first wave of nerves and just go with the flow. I did my very first ever battleground for the Valentine's Day achievement last February (pity the Love Fool at the AB blacksmith, and had a blast.

Alterac Valley or Wintergrasp are the easiest to do the acheesement.
Vladeon Oct 18th 2009 3:22AM
get your gnerd rage on, go to Wintergrasp, hop in a turret in the front of wintergrasp (assuming you're defending) and watch the HKs roll on in while all the idiots fight in front of the main gates of wintergrasp. You get the achievement, maybe a few other achievements if you don't pvp as much, as well as honor to buy pretty nice pvp gear, which isn't bad starter dps/healing gear if you're a fresh 80.

If you are a healing class, go into AV, hope they turtle near the Alliance bridge and heal yourself over and over - it took me about 5-6mins. I felt bad so then I actually started healing others :)

European here - It's been updated indeed, so far I've seen caster and dps rings, a 1h sword, plate helm and goodies - pumpkin helm, broom, stuff like that. Nothing amazing but very good if you're leveling an alt :)
Accipeter Oct 17th 2009 8:49PM
OMG this looks like a royal pain in the butt.
Aggiepolo08 Oct 17th 2009 8:50PM
Is it possible to trade the helm around just to get that part of the achivement?
Hesh Oct 17th 2009 9:03PM
Sinister Calling items are in the bags you get from doing "Trick or Treat" at the Inn Keepers
ive already got about 4 helms.
Shen Oct 17th 2009 9:17PM
Not that it really matters, but you have the first achievement wrong. You get Trick or Treat from the candy buckets, not the innkeepers.
But you will get it anyway when you start to do Tricks and Treats of Azeroth.
y2fatboy Oct 17th 2009 9:39PM
Just a little aside, doing Tricks and Treats of Azeroth on an alt you're leveling is a great way to gain a ton of xp! Last year I leveled my druid about 2/3 the way from 61 to 62 solely on the xp from completing this achievement alone.
Also if you're still trying to complete quests for the Seeker title (complete 3000 quests achievement), then this will help a lot too - each candy bucket you 'open' counts as a quest completed.
Irreverenthope Oct 18th 2009 12:13AM
Great article, although I couldn't help but notice that "a lot" was spelt as one word in the summary. The cost of freedom is eternal vigilence!
Agerath Oct 18th 2009 8:58AM
Vigilance, you mean.
Jay Oct 19th 2009 4:08AM
lol
Thraelys Oct 18th 2009 12:11AM
What about the achievement that had those quests that tell you to ruin Hallow's End for the Alliance/Horde? Is that taken out of the requirements? If so, I'll be Hallowed at 1:00 am tonight.
Thraelys Oct 18th 2009 12:31AM
Nevermind. I fail at skimming pages.
Amaxe Oct 18th 2009 12:58AM
Just need the squashling on my main to get the title... last year it dropped for my alt from a trick or treat, but zilch for my main despite running the instance daily.
