Breakfast Topic: They just don't get it...

While discussing some of the quests coming up in patch 3.3, we'd made a joke referencing the Knights who say "Ni!" from Monty Python's Holy Grail. Our own Matt Low mentioned that he didn't get whatever inside joke we were making. Much to our dismay, he had never seen the movie or any Monty Python for that matter. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords for daily quests wouldn't get a chuckle from him. Terry Palin in Elwynn Forest quoting the lumberjack song is also lost on him. He wouldn't even be that concerned about eating the Crunchy Frog available from Darkmoon Faire because he wouldn't know that it contained crunchy, raw, unboned, real, dead frog instead of an almond whirl.
With the vast number of pop culture references scattered in World of Warcraft, it's sad when any are lost on its players. What obscure references have you found in the game that you've enjoyed or other people have completely missed?

The part about women in ponds distributing swords always seemed to me to be a reference to King Arthur first and foremost.
The Lady in the Lake was the name of the woman who gifted him with Excalibur after all.

Seems you need to see that movie, too.

The woman lying in a pond handing out swords is a Monty Python reference to a parody they did on King Arthur and Excalibur, and they question if having a woman lying in a pond handing out swords is really a valid method for determining who the best leader of a nation should be.

"Oh, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you."
= best part of the movie.

Man still made a valid observation though, so downgrading his post fails hard.

I think he's talking about the Argent Tournament Dailies. They don't make a reference to Monty Python's King Arthur, but to the original King Arthur story.

The Arthurian legend contains a single sword of epic significance. That is nothing at all like the argent tournament swords, that wouldn't make a lick of sense as the reference. The Monty Python reference to "Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords" makes far more sense as the source of those quests.
Arthur: "The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by Divine Providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king!"
Dennis: "Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony!"

IFC is doing a Monty Python marathon every night at 9 this week for the 40th anniversary of Monty Python's Flying Circus if you get that channel. Anyone who hasn't yet become one of the converted needs to go watch it.
And do a silly walk on the way to the tv.

Notice the Sporeggans in Zangarmarsh? Several of them are allergy references.
Hch'uu = achoo (a sneeze)
T'shu = tissue
Khn'nix = Kleenex (genericized trademark tissue)
Gzhun'tt = gesundheit (said after a sneeze)

artifex Oct 20th 2009 5:53PM
I wonder if they have a battle cry, too: "For Sporeggan!"

BooMsx Nov 1st 2009 12:15PM
just the most awesome and thrilling sci-fi book ever written http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune_(novel) and the dune games will be best RTS forever ^_^

Dune is fantastic; the best book I've ever read. I like the references in wow such as "The sleeper has awakened" quest, and even the "Dib'Muad's Crysknife".
Evelinda Oct 19th 2009 10:57PM
the sleeper must awaken, Boize...
tomteboda Oct 20th 2009 1:38PM
There is a quest in Terrokar where you use thumpers to call up worms. Totally a Dune reference.

I'm in a guild called "Bring Out Your Dead". Every week we have a parade through Stormwind, calling out "Bring Out Your Dead!" along the way.
Amaxe Oct 19th 2009 11:15AM
On a similar theme, I had a hunter with a bird pet, which I named "DeadParrot"

ElroyJetson Oct 19th 2009 8:39AM
Yah, there's also a coin in Dalaran fountain... Inigo's Copper Coin "I wish I had my father back..."
