Our very own
Robin Torres is making the plunge into raiding and is looking for guides that help with the setup and use of the
healing AddOn Grid. Being
the resource nut that I am, I had a handful of links for her in two minutes. And now I share them with you:
Some players prefer
HealBot over Grid (here's
a good comparison of the two) and still others prefer AddOns that do more than just
raid heal functionality (
PitBull 4, though still in beta.)

WOoo! I needed that!

And to think I used to use Healbot...
I like this one much better :D

And to think you can still use Healbot.
It honestly does everything Grid/Clique does... and mostly out of the box too. If you're a freak that wants your addon to be little tiny squares, you can make healbot look like that if you want to. There's two whole tabs to change the look.
The review of Grid vs Healbot linked above is pretty even handed. I've never played a druid, so I'm not sure about some of those comments, but Healbot tracks my Shaman's Earthshield & Riptide just fine.
I don't know why people think harder to configure = better somehow. o_0

Harder to configure = better when it has a lot more features. I think they are pretty balanced now, but in the early days Grid had way, way more options over Healbot. Grid is still better if you want to make a completely custom UI, but that can take awhile.

grid is great. i used healbot for a little while, but tried out grid and never looked back. as a resto druid, grid + mouseover healing macros is all i need for EZ mode raid healing
compact, neat, and able to get the job done, i'd recommend it for any healer.

Grid is my main healing addon, but i do have one issue with it; if theres another druid in the group it shows both my and their HoTs on the frames. Anyone know if theres anyway to filter it so it will only track your own HoTs?

It works, I tried it myself.

a challenger appears:
vuhdo's now the third you'll hear mentioned in the same breath as grid & healbot.
hotsndots has a nice writeup regarding it. http://www.hotsdots.com/2009/10/improving-the-interface-using-addons-vuhdo-raid-frames/
Druidski Oct 19th 2009 7:38PM
Yeah let's not forget VuhDo, it's amazing.
Hiwa Oct 19th 2009 7:43PM
I tried Vuhdo, was not impressed. I'm a healbot user all the way. But, to each his own, as long as the raid stays healed it doesn't matter to me what add-on people use.
Hyacinthe Oct 19th 2009 8:07PM
I clicked to add Vuhdo to the conversation. It is certainly deserving of mention with these two.
I honestly don't see how anyone can prefer healbot over vuhdo. Vuhdo has all the functionality of healbot AND uses scroll up/down as a bind- additionally, you can bind your macro's to clicks, which is a huge lifesaver for me. Obviously, to each his own- but Vuhdo just outperforms healbot.
I haven't tried Grid- it takes a lot to get me to change my addons from anything I'm really comfortable with, and Grid was intimidating as I heard over and over again that you couldn't use it out of the box. I also wasn't comfortable switching from the awesome shading of healbot's bars- layered to give better visual cuing (for me) of when to start worrying about people. I remember reading that Grid's bars don't offer enough layers to get the same effect (aside from trying to set that up myself!), though that might be old news at this point.
Actually, the bar shading would have been the deal breaker for me. If Vuhdo didn't have that feature, I would've stuck with healbot.

I use Vuhdo exclusively now. It takes a lot of effort to get Grid configured to work as well as Vuhdo does out of the box. Why bother. Vuhdo is fast, powerful, and is designed specifically for healing. There's not much reason to use anything else.

VuhDo is one of the ones I found when searching for a healing addon - I was using grid with macros I created, but found that combining it with VuhDo just made my healing so much simpler.
Silk Oct 20th 2009 1:30AM
Hyacinthe,
Healbot can also do those things you mention. Firstly you can use any keybinds within healbot (when I used healbot with bartender I had wheel up, wheel down, ctrl wheel up and ctr wheel down all bound within the BT interface) - all you have to do is use a macro with the tag [target=mouseover].
Secondly, you can include macros in healbot. Simply put the macro name in the spell slot and Robert's your mothers brother.
I put together a very brief visual guide on it - http://silkwow.wordpress.com/2009/08/03/how-to-use-healbot

Grid's power all comes from its configuration. If you don't have it configured correctly it loses alot of its "Umph". I think thats why alot of people kinda shy away from it.
So this is a great resource, thanks for putting it up.

i love my xperl clique set up so everyone has its own :)
Soulestream Oct 19th 2009 8:31PM
Just wanted to throw a ditto in for Vudoh. I have healed with healbot and Grid made my head hurt(these guides would have helped). Vudoh is easy to configure and setup and "just works".
One note for Druids. Turn off auto Rez on click. I kept Battle Rezzing people after fights by accident, because i wasn't completely out of combat. Damn you poison clouds. :O)

I have been and always will remain faithfull to Quick Heals. A much lesser used, lesser known add-on that I find significantlier user friendly.... if significantlier is even a word.
Bith Oct 19th 2009 9:28PM
No mention of VuhDo? For shame.
It's basically the successor to Grid, Healbot, and Pitbull that combines good features of all the raid frames and has many of its own unique qualities.
You'd be a fool to not try VuhDo out.

I've had a lot of conversations with guildies and friends over Healbot vs Grid/Clique.
What it boils down to is:
Healbot = Simple. EASY TO SETUP, works out-of-the-box. Confusing in groups of more than 10.
Grid+Clique = Complex, HARD TO SETUP (Clique is easy though). However - Provides better situation awareness, better debuff reporting and can be used for more than just healing.
If you want a simple, easy to use package and are only doing 5mans or small raids then HB is just fine. However more advanced raiding practically requires a more advanced solution. Which is where Grid steps in.
It's very fiddly to get started with but once you've taken the time to learn how it will more than repay your time.
I use it on most of my toons now that have some sort of raid utility value. My Prot Pali uses it to gauge threat and debuffs. Clique is configured to throw Righteous Defense, Hand of Protection/Freedom/Salvation, Lay on Hands, Cleanse etc on raid members as needed.
Well worth the time taken to learn the mod.
