The Queue: There's more than one way to skin a worgen
Welcome back to The Queue, WoW.com's (almost) daily Q&A column where the WoW.com team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky be your host today.
So my thought process Monday morning goes like this. Kubien asks a question about skining worgens. My cat is next to me vying for my attention, and after headbutting me for a few minutes decides to pounce on my arm. Luckily I'm a fatty so all is good and he just bounces off harmlessly to the floor, but it makes me think for a minute about punishing him. Then I remember the old saying, "There's more than one way to skin a cat."
And from cat, to lolcat, to lolwowcats.
I'm sorry Warcraft community, I really am. But what's done is done. Let's just move on and go have some tea and crumpets.
Kubien asked...
"While killing Worgen in Silverpine Forest the other day, it occurred to me I can skin them. When Alliance play Worgen, can I skin them? Please!"
No, you're not going to be able to skin other players. If you can't milk or tan the hide of a tauren, then you're not going to be able to take the skin off a worgen either. Of course this is no official answer to this, but I'd be willing to be all the gold I've got that I'm right.
Hendrata asked...
"Regarding the recent changes in AoE cap, then my question is: why does AOE have to be capped at all? What's the rationale behind it?"
Prior to BC you had no cap on AoE damage. This lead to rather silly things like mages and warlocks taking down entire zones with their AoE spells. I even did a few instances with a very well geared prot pally (a rarity in those days) who would gather up a hundred mobs and the two T3 mages would blast everything down before the priest went out of mana. Not exactly the way the game should be played, so Blizzard implemented the AoE cap in BC. They're just refining it now.
Adroog asked...
"Why can't tabards be turned off like helms and cloaks?"
No official answer on this, but think of necessity. You can't go without a cloak or helm (assuming you don't want to fail at WoW). You can go without a tabard. Also, back in the day cloaks and helms were pretty fugly. Today they're not as bad, but a lot of players are used to seeing their heads and tails no matter what equipment they have on. I wouldn't put it past Blizzard to allow some gear to be visibly "turned off", however. It's a feature other games have, and those usually make their way into WoW eventually.
Furry asked...
"The first fight has two giant Jormungar Worms that tunnel underground and pop back up elsewhere throughout the fight against them. However, before the fifth fight begins, we learn that the ground is hollow and that it can break fairly easily. Where do these worms burrow? Wouldn't they just fall down as soon as they go underground?"
Look for wormsign, you'll be able to tell where they hide. May your knife chip and shatter.
Jane-Marie asked...
"One of my professions is Inscription and I used to make gold out of selling the decks that can be handed in for trinkets at darkmoon faire. However, since the introduction of more gear in ToC and now Onyxia the value of the decks has fallen through the floor. Is there any chance Blizzard will give these decks/trinkets some sort of boost or is inscription now a complete waste of a time?"
Highly unlikely. The devaluing of crafted equipment is just part of the progression of the game. It's unfortunate that such expensive items like the Darkmoon cards are devalued so much, but it happens; and usually right around the time of the third tier of raiding. Remember back to BC, once you got into Mount Hyjal and the Black Temple the level 70 Darkmoon cards were replaced relatively quickly.
With the exception of the damned Dragonspine Trophy. That thing never dropped and would never be replaced by any piece of gear. Period.

haha, nice Dune reference Adam. Kudos!

But that's a pretty harsh insult to give someone just for asking a question. Before a duel, that kind of language would be acceptable, but...
Dave Oct 19th 2009 3:08PM
I've been asking the same about trolls for years. I really, really want a nice trollskin cloak.
Icehart Oct 19th 2009 5:50PM
And I've been wanting a pair of Dwarf-Skin Boots, but Blizz keeps saying no....
devilsei Oct 19th 2009 7:41PM
Dwarf-skin boots? Bah... you obviously aren't fashion-savvy...
Gnome-body boots and heels are where its at right now...
I should know, I'm a blood elf.

It puts the lotion on its fur, or else it gets the Mind Flay again. Muahahahaha!

"If you can't milk or tan the hide of a tuaren..."
A what? lol j/k.
Also the "Furry" asking about worms burrowing in and out of the something was pretty funny too.

Tauren are irrelevant to whether you can skin Worgen. You can't skin npc Tauren, so of course you can't skin characters which are Tauren, the same is not true of the Worgen.
It most likely will be the case that you cannot skin Worgen, but it will have nothing to do with Tauren beyond what it has to do with any race, in that having one race with a substantially different characteristic from other races would not be typical of Blizzard's modus operandi.

Skinning a worgen should aggro every worgens
in a 40 yard radius. It makes sense, you are actually skinning their best friend.

Shai-hulud! Worm sign the likes of which god has never seen....that movie is so good i actually makes me want to hurt a litle bit.
On a question note after all the helping i did last week (or at least i hope it helped) i have two questions:
1. Why is the wow player base filled with people who really really badly want to skin worgens/taurens, i see that question all the time!
2. Is there any sign that blizzard is going to vamp up the honor gains anytime soon? I grinded up 75k honor (capped out at 75k QQ) as i was levelling my druid and it really atonished me that i could only buy one piece, after looking around it seems i'll have to spend around 300k honor ,not including all the wintergrasp marks i'll need, just for a very basic set of pvp gear! Spending emblems on pvp is not an option either as i like to enjoy all aspects of the game. i honestly think this is being sorely overlooked, i have a main, i've done it once and man did it hurt the first time...
Ttam Oct 19th 2009 3:24PM
I would also skin Humans as well...
Candina@WH Oct 19th 2009 3:54PM
I, on the other hand, want to behead two gnomes, one rogue, one mage, and use them as shoulder armor on my undead Shadow Priest..
but Blizz says... NooooooOooooo....

Well, there are two points that you could be talking about and I'm not sure if it's one of them or both. Either way, it doesn't really matter.
If you mean that it takes too long to get 300k honor, it really doesn't take that long. Each piece costs about 50k honor give or take a few thousand. Just with the weekly Wintergrasp quests you can earn around 20k. Even if you only played one Wintergrasp a week you would end up having almost enough to get one piece after 2 weeks. That is just two weeks and you only had to do about 40 minutes of work, so that is the slowest you could possibly get. Add in a few more Wintergrasps and a few Battlegrounds and with just minimal amount of time spent you can have that down to about a week too. So by playing very little pvp you can be completely set up in honor bought pvp gear in about 1-2 months. That’s not that bad. (No to mention the battleground daily quests, or the Wintergrasp marks and Stone Keeper shards that you get from dungeons that can be turned into honor and sent to any character on your acct.)
If you’re talking about the honor cap, yeah it’s annoying but it’s there for a reason. It’s so you can’t save honor when a new arena season is coming up and instantly get new rewards or something like that iirc. (Correct me if I’m wrong through) And if you were saving the honor because you were still leveling, I believe that you can still buy the armor from the vendor at lower levels. You just can’t equip it.

The fact that you just referred to the movie as being good, and not the book, made kittens everywhere die.
Movies based on books = bad idea
Akhenaton Oct 19th 2009 8:33PM
1. the movie in itself is an absolute masterpiece! I understand that you love the book, but i'm getting round to reading it, i promise! ^_^
2. I'm sorry to say that i think your wintergrasp honor strategy is highly over estimated, i never, ever see that much honor from wintergrasp ever and I'm really not "doing it wrong" I do those quests one a week and they accumulate around 11k honor which is enough for one epic gem and the rest of the honor from wintergrasp and the other battlegrounds is frankly garbage. Even the "for great honor" quest is so outdated that i could probably sell the rewards i get from gathering those marks on the black market for more honor and they'd be getting a huge bargain.
For your other point (that 2 months for a set of pvp gear isn't bad) 2 months to be severely undergeared and still getting the pudding beaten out of you like it was season 5 all over again IS a long time. It is a very, very long time to be two seasons behind, I've spent this expansion and the last being behind in gear and genuinely suffering because of it; sure i may have spent the first parts of these expansions doing "too much" pve but that's not truly the point, i should be able to be at most one season behind with the top end gear still going to the hardcores.
Shai-hulud and thankyou for the feedback guys, the skinning comments really did confirm my worst fears. We must not fear, fear is the mind killer.

Don't wait, read Dune NOW. If you like the movie, logically you'll love the book so much more. :)
Jarvish Oct 20th 2009 2:33AM
"Movies based on books = bad idea"
In almost all cases, yes. In the case of this particular movie I beg to differ. Dune is one of the best conversions of a book I've seen. Yes, the book has so much more to it than the movie has, but try reading Clan of the Cave Bear and then watch the movie... *shudder*.

The films brilliant and the book is brilliant as well, just be warned i think theres 5 or 6 books are Dune and they just get more sureal as they go.
I just feel sorry for Duncan, poor bloke, just leave him in peace.
Sarg Oct 20th 2009 11:52AM
hahaha, yeah, poor Duncan indeed...
I agree, both the books and the movie are masterpieces. It is a pity that Frank's son is such a poor, uninspired writer, bent of milking that cash cow :(
