The Queue: There's more than one way to skin a worgen
Welcome back to The Queue, WoW.com's (almost) daily Q&A column where the WoW.com team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Adam Holisky be your host today.
So my thought process Monday morning goes like this. Kubien asks a question about skining worgens. My cat is next to me vying for my attention, and after headbutting me for a few minutes decides to pounce on my arm. Luckily I'm a fatty so all is good and he just bounces off harmlessly to the floor, but it makes me think for a minute about punishing him. Then I remember the old saying, "There's more than one way to skin a cat."
And from cat, to lolcat, to lolwowcats.
I'm sorry Warcraft community, I really am. But what's done is done. Let's just move on and go have some tea and crumpets.
Kubien asked...
"While killing Worgen in Silverpine Forest the other day, it occurred to me I can skin them. When Alliance play Worgen, can I skin them? Please!"
No, you're not going to be able to skin other players. If you can't milk or tan the hide of a tauren, then you're not going to be able to take the skin off a worgen either. Of course this is no official answer to this, but I'd be willing to be all the gold I've got that I'm right.
Hendrata asked...
"Regarding the recent changes in AoE cap, then my question is: why does AOE have to be capped at all? What's the rationale behind it?"
Prior to BC you had no cap on AoE damage. This lead to rather silly things like mages and warlocks taking down entire zones with their AoE spells. I even did a few instances with a very well geared prot pally (a rarity in those days) who would gather up a hundred mobs and the two T3 mages would blast everything down before the priest went out of mana. Not exactly the way the game should be played, so Blizzard implemented the AoE cap in BC. They're just refining it now.
Adroog asked...
"Why can't tabards be turned off like helms and cloaks?"
No official answer on this, but think of necessity. You can't go without a cloak or helm (assuming you don't want to fail at WoW). You can go without a tabard. Also, back in the day cloaks and helms were pretty fugly. Today they're not as bad, but a lot of players are used to seeing their heads and tails no matter what equipment they have on. I wouldn't put it past Blizzard to allow some gear to be visibly "turned off", however. It's a feature other games have, and those usually make their way into WoW eventually.
Furry asked...
"The first fight has two giant Jormungar Worms that tunnel underground and pop back up elsewhere throughout the fight against them. However, before the fifth fight begins, we learn that the ground is hollow and that it can break fairly easily. Where do these worms burrow? Wouldn't they just fall down as soon as they go underground?"
Look for wormsign, you'll be able to tell where they hide. May your knife chip and shatter.
Jane-Marie asked...
"One of my professions is Inscription and I used to make gold out of selling the decks that can be handed in for trinkets at darkmoon faire. However, since the introduction of more gear in ToC and now Onyxia the value of the decks has fallen through the floor. Is there any chance Blizzard will give these decks/trinkets some sort of boost or is inscription now a complete waste of a time?"
Highly unlikely. The devaluing of crafted equipment is just part of the progression of the game. It's unfortunate that such expensive items like the Darkmoon cards are devalued so much, but it happens; and usually right around the time of the third tier of raiding. Remember back to BC, once you got into Mount Hyjal and the Black Temple the level 70 Darkmoon cards were replaced relatively quickly.
With the exception of the damned Dragonspine Trophy. That thing never dropped and would never be replaced by any piece of gear. Period.

Really? I had no idea, sounds like something that would have happened in early WoW though, heh.
*Plays "The more you know" tune*

How much gold is that Adam?... i hope that more than 36g XD
how much money do you have in your chars... what about the rest of the wow.com staff?
Catala Oct 19th 2009 3:35PM
As to the tabard thing - Aren't tabards all about showing your allegiance to one group or another (be it guild or faction)? So... you can't show your allegiance if you've turned it off.

Why are they even items though?
Getting rid of all the non-unique ones in my bank, I still have most of a bag full and I don't even have the achievement for 25 of them.
Why were they not put on the pet/mount tab and made into options for a generic tabard item? You choose what version to show in the tab and then you can represent however you like, or not at all.
Alchemistmerlin Oct 19th 2009 4:13PM
@Angus
Because that would be sensible/convenient, and Blizzard tries to avoid that if they can.
Also because it would be a little too much like "gear customization" which is like a sin to them or something.
kabshiel Oct 19th 2009 4:49PM
Delete them. If you ever want one of them back, you can go to the tabard vendor and there will be a dialogue option to get it back.

Is the loot from the Halloween trick bag diminished this year? last year it seemed each bag had a few treats and little stuff in it, and this year its just one thing?
immortlone Oct 19th 2009 3:40PM
here's an answer to the burrowing question:
you know how it took a week for each new boss to be implemented? well the Jormungars (Jormungai?) were the first boss and Anub was the last boss (weeks later). the nerubians took a month to get under there after they found out the tournament grounds were built and we were fighting those badies. what better place to conceal a carefully crafted "trap door" than the place where we were all fighting to prove ourselves worthy of fighting the lich king?
you reply, "but you fight them all at once!" and i say "thats like saying that every other boss in WoW should be removed after you first down him/her/it. on release they weren't all out at once. if you downed the first boss and couldn't fight him again because you've killed him moved onto the next boss in the tourney next week, there wouldn't be much gear would there?"
Angus Oct 19th 2009 3:58PM
Easier answer:
The ground wasn't that thin. Arthas is a big baddie using a lot of folks that tunnel. They waited until the worms had made convenient tunnels in the ground under the floor and used those to weaken it enough to shatter when he did some super mojo spell (which triggered a bunch of explosives) and so he used their own fighters against them.

"Easier answer:
A wizard did it!"
Fixed.

Inscription is a useless profession for making gold w/o Darkmoon cards? Tell that to Gevlon or all the other people making thousands of gold a day on glyphs!
Jane-Marie Oct 19th 2009 5:48PM
I can only base my opinions on my own experiences on my server. Sorry if that does not fit with your own.

Dune references always give me a nice smile - I've kept my Dib'Muad's Crysknife for this reason alone.
That said - I'd really love to be able to turn off certain gear. Hunter T10 head (horn!) and feet (rhino/elephant feet!) are absolutely atrocious!
Logarth Oct 20th 2009 6:04AM
You can turn your helm off if you so choose to.
It's in your interface options under 'display'.
Take care,
- Logarth (Gorgonnash)

What about the Undead Cannibalize racial? I haven't actually played an Undead, so I don't know if you can still use it on other players or not. If you can cannibalize other players, why couldn't you skin them?
Just sayin, if you're gonna roll Worgen, prepare to get ganked and skinned, lol.
thebl4ckd0g Oct 19th 2009 4:55PM
@Ekko: you can't cannibalize Player Characters anymore. There was a point and time early on in the game where you could, but Blizzard removed it. Sadly. :(
themightysven Oct 19th 2009 4:12PM
I really think we should be able to skin the opposite faction. It wouldn't hurt the opponent any, and we could use the skin for PvP crafting recipes.
Of course Stormwind would be covered in people wearing Blood Elf gear, but think of Orgimmar, with everyone decked out in Gnome Boots (with Gnome faces on the knees of the boots)
catharsis80 Oct 19th 2009 4:17PM
"If you can't milk or tan the hide of a tauren, then you're not going to be able to take the skin off a worgen either."
Yes, because as we all know, cows are milked when they're dead.
catharsis80 Oct 19th 2009 4:22PM
Now that I'm getting an in-game visual, I'm not sure whether I'd laugh or be horrified. Picture... You're walking along in some contested territory on your way back to some town, and you see an Alliance...milking a dead Tauren.
I'm gonna have to go with horrified on that one.
