Most hunters will do their best to keep their pet alive, but there's some stuff that they just don't have the ability to control. At the same time, pets are usually 10 - 40% of the hunter's damage. Dead pet = serious DPS loss, which can mean a wipe for the group.

Pets are not as important as other characters, but keeping them alive is definitely a Good Thing.
