I personally keep up Mend Pet everytime I can on my Pet, but I also treasure my healers who heal my pet, because Mend Pet can't always keep up with the damage.
I understand and agree with pets being bottom on the priority list but the person who said, to papaphrase "screw pets let the hunters pull them back" is ignorant. I am routinely cresting 6k DPS on my hunter, my pet can be 5-10% of that, every second that I am using my mana and global CD's to DPS (instead of heal my pet) is a shorter time that the boss lives and less time for the healers to heal, even though pets should be on the bottom of the list, they still need to be on it!
I am lucky, my healers are smart enough to take care of me and my pet, and they also know that me and my pet will be the first persons there with a Roar or Distracting Shot, to peel mobs off of them when they take aggro.
