Blizzard explains delay in Race Change service

He also reminds everyone that "the only thing better than offering a service people want is making sure that service works when people want it." It's pretty much standard operating procedure for Blizzard, a company notorious for pushing back releases in favor of getting things right. It's interesting to note that Blizzard introduced faction changes ahead of race changes, perhaps because the former addresses more player concerns while the latter is merely a customization preference.
There's also a chance that Blizzard will allow the new race-class combos leading up to the Cataclysm, which would be perfect timing for the paid race change service, anyway. I was looking forward to swapping my Blood Elf Death Knight into an Orc, but since the announcement, I've been drooling over the prospect of an Undead Hunter -- a race-class combo I've wanted to play since I first launched the game. I've waited this long, I guess a little more of Soon won't hurt.

You really think the new race-class combos will be offered before Cataclysm? Not that I have any concrete evidence against it, but it seems like everything that's been put out by blizz regarding this indicates it hitting as a part of Cataclysm... (for example, the table explaining new combos includes the new races, and is part of the Cataclysm section of the official site).
Don't get me wrong, it would be AWESOME if you are right; the sooner I can start my Tauren Paladin and my Troll Druid, the better.

I could be completely wrong, but I think Zach was saying the service being offered just prior to Cataclysm would be a great time to launch it when many of us are waiting to convert a race we play to a new race class combo. The only reason I’m looking for the race change is for a space goat -> dwarf change for the shaman and a space goat -> gnome for the priest.

If my memory serves me right, which it often doesn't... We saw the death knight chracter selection option before Wrath (but it was greyed out).

Why wouldnt it come before or even at day 1? Only argument I've heard so far against it is that "they wouldnt allow making tauren paladin to 80 yet" but umm.. thats bit shortsighted logic isnt it?
Its not like they would allow us to choose tauren paladins yet as option. Just like with faction change.. you cant do tauren paladin etc yet. So it might very well be available for combos now and rest at cataclysm like couple months later when "people already have enough dwarf shamans at 80/85".

They have pretty much flat out said that they will not be allowing the race change into a new race/class combination from the start of Cataclysm. They said multiple times that they do not want the first level 85 Night Elf Mage or Human Hunter or Troll Druid to be a race changed toon. They believe it cheapens the achievement and do not wish to allow it. They gave an estimated timeline of "a couple of months" after Cataclysm for this to happen.
I am sure we will probably see the race change service added with the 4.0 patch or more than likely during the "downtime" between Ice Crown's inevitable turn into the land of farming and 4.0. Blizzard is not stupid, they want people to keep playing all the way up until the expac, dropping the racechange service into this time is ideal for them.

Niwarr,
Source please.
If anything they've said that ralm first is really not a big deal and nothing to get all concerned aout.

I'm sorry wolfy, I really am. I ate my last bit of food when I pulled that 3-pack back there. I hate to do this, but...
::cannibalize::
Zrob Oct 21st 2009 3:49PM
Yeah, that would be really great, if undead could use cannibalize on beasts.
Which they cannot.
Besides, who hasn't played undead and occasionally nommed down on a colleage who died in a bad pull?
Mynarc Oct 21st 2009 4:13PM
Not me as not only can it not be used on beasts it can't be used on friendly people dead bodys

I absolutely cannot wait until Race Changes come out. I've been checking WoW.com and the official website multiple times every day with the sole purpose of seeing if they are available yet. My blood elf priest is not becoming a troll any faster.
This raises my hopes, actually. Because they're talking about it, it may mean they are coming to a close on the development. Of course, it could mean the opposite as well, but I choose to believe the former. :)
Bring. It. On.

I feel the same way - been manically checking every day to see if it's live. I don't know why I'm so hung up on it, but I am. Really really regret going BE on my Death Knight for one (BE just doesn't work for me - how could I ever have not rolled a DK Orc?). Also have a few neglected alts I might level again if I can change race. If they allow early Cataclysm race/class combos I'll fall out of my chair. I'm itching to play a Troll druid so bad it hurts.

If blizzard is still working on the functionality for race change, then why is it listed in the account manager. From the sounds of it, they have the functionality in-place already. What they are working on is a mapping table for the conversion to happen. Once that is done then the rest of the service should come together. I still don't understand what is taking so long if all they are doing is working on the conversion. If something is functionally wrong, then why haven't they pull faction change. It still sounds like the same code base with a different conversion tables. It makes me feel uncomfortable as a customer to know that a provider has intended a product release and has kept pushing the release date out because of stability concerns. This is why software companies have QA department. Software should meet a certain criteria before release announcements are made. But then again, I don't work for bliz, just some other large software company. Who really knows, I don't really, all I know is that I will be waiting for this service just like everyone else.

All aboard the QQ Choo Choo!
Kaphik Oct 21st 2009 3:42PM
They had faction changes listed on the account management page for a while before those went live, too.

Dear WoW.com staff: can we put this parent comment in the weekly [1.] Local spotlight along with an explanation of how far off-base this line of thinking is? The attitude of "I mean seriously, it's just code, how hard can software engineering really be?" smacks of ignorance, impatience, and entitlement, all of which makes the game and community less fun for the rest of us.
Fallacy Oct 21st 2009 4:55PM
Where do I sign up to buy software from this "Other Large Software Company" that evidently does NOT push back release dates out of stability concerns?
I wanna git me summa THAT stuff!

@Fallacy
It's called Microsoft.

Everyone in the world already probably knows this, but here goes...(been 6 months since I last played) would I be correct in assuming that heirloom items transfer with you when you do a faction change? Or have they made it so you can mail heirlooms between ones own toons regardless of faction? Thanks
Rhabella Oct 21st 2009 3:28PM
If you haven't been playing WoW, why didn't you bother to get some sun? :)
If they are in your inventory when the transfer takes place, they should be in your bags after the transfer.
